Pros: Solid performances, well assembled tear jerker Cons: I don't like it
Mr. Holland’s Opus. Something about this film nags at me. It was one of my mother’s favorite movies and I’ve seen it – voluntarily – numerous times. I always tear up at least once, so it definitely succeeds at its tear jerking goals. But ...

Pros: Richard Dreyfuss Cons: overstuffed, overlong
I don't know if Richard Dreyfuss has grown up on-screen, but he certainly has aged on-screen. Once upon a time, he was young and brash. The parts he played in "American Graffiti" and "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" were somewhat gawkily naive in...

Pros: Wonderful story of passion, inspiration, how a teacher can touch your life. Cons: Somewhat far-fetched ending
If we're lucky, we all have had a teacher like Richard Dreyfuss as teacher Glenn Holland in Mr. Holland's Opus. I did, and by coincidence, he was a much beloved high school choir director whose age is about the same as Mr. Holland's, and career ...

Pros: Teaches down to earth lessons and values Cons: None
Life doesn’t always take the turns we desire, and probably won’t end up the way we dream it will. But, we still can make a difference along the way. Glen Holland learns this lesson in Mr. Holland’s Opus, and, watching his experiences, we...

Pros: Dreyfuss, Thomas. The 'heart' and 'soul' I found in the film. Cons: Some might find it 'sappy'. Not this viewer.
... There are certain pleasures that one does not necessarily share with ones acquaintances. Perhaps an odd food combination, a sappy song, . . .or a film that is more to you than it should be. Mr Holland's Opus is a secret pleasure of ...

Pros: A credible story of triumph over the self. Cons: Long and a bit vague in places.
High School was not my favorite place to be at the time. Somebody once said that School is interrupting my education, and that is how it seemed to me- at the time. Maybe it was that way for you too. The impersonal classrooms, the pressure to ...

Pros: Beautiful movie about finding your niche even when sidetracked. Fitting music, newsreels, fashions, etc. Cons: None
It's late summer in 1964, and not even a year has passed since a much-loved President--our youngest, to date, and a family man whose children were still very small--had been shockingly and senselessly taken from us right before Thanksgiving the year ...

Pros: Shows what good teaching can do. Oh for the love of the children! Cons: NONE!!!
The following is a critique of Mr. Holland's Opus written as part of an assignment in a course for my Ed.D on Multiple Intelligences. While you have probably seen the movie, and several of you have written reviews, I challenge you to look at ...

Pros: Inspiring story of a man and his passion for teaching. Cons: None I could think of.
Lets dream for a while. What would YOU do all day long, if you could get paid well for doing so? Golfing? Programming computers? Working with horses? Gourmet cook? I would LOVE to be a photographer. I enjoy shooting photos of people and landscapes....

Pros: Safe for the entire family! Cons: none
Every once in a while Hollywood proves it is possible to produce a movie without violence, foul language and nudity and still have a box office hit. Mr. Holland’s Opus is just such a movie. Instead of relying on shock value to attract its...

Pros: A happy ending Cons: Some slow spots
This show was on regular TV the other night, so I thought I would watch it. Others told me it was boring. But they forgot that I spent three years in marching band, so I would be able to relate to this movie. I didn't play a musical instrument, but I...

Pros: see review Cons: see review
There seems to be only two types of dramas: those that are good because they're true to themselves, and those that are sappy and pander to the audience. "Mr. Holland's Opus" is one of the latter. This is a pretty good movie for what it is, but...

Pros: Everything! Cons: Nothing!
I'll never understand why this movie got slammed so viciously in its reviews. How often does a movie come along about a subject and feelings that are so real and tangible to the average working person?
Mr. Holland's Opus is a wonderful tale of...

Pros: Wonderful historical content, great plot, Fantastic sound track, Everything Cons: It reminds me how long I've been around.
Everyone has a teacher that they loved. There were always the "cool" teachers and the ones no one liked. Mr. Holland was dragged into teaching kicking and fighting only to find it was all he wanted to do.
This movie is for music...

Pros: wonderful movie about life's stories Cons: none
Mr. Holland's Opus. What irony is contained here. A musical man who begins his career in the 1960's takes a teaching job, because he falls into it, and his family needs the money. He teaches and moans. Moans and teaches. He tutors and guides, and...
