Pros: Gritty realism. Knockout brass work. Cons: A bit too grim for some, this isn't what you think it is.
Take one poverty stricken town, add in a young attractive couple, and a home-grown band. It's a trie ...

Pros: Pete Postlethwaite, great music, nice pace and tone Cons: Miss-billed as a romantic comedy
Before I even begin to discuss "Brassed Off", I must admit to a serious lack of knowledge of British internal politics. With this in mind, I'm sure I viewed the movie with an entirely different perspective than either a British audience, or simply a...

Pros: Ewan (as always), some funny moments Cons: Back of the box is a conniving liar. Liar, I say!
A delightful comedy! the back of the box raves. A fabulous love story! Happiness! Joy! Whimsical frolics in the street! Blissful romantic evenings on the dock eating fish and chips with a man with crooked teeth!
The back of the box is a liar....

Pros: Excellent acting, awesome music, authentic pictures of Northern England Cons: Ending a little over the top. accents difficult for some Americans.
This is definitely something that wouldn't have gotten over on a big screen in the USA. The film is the story of a Colliery band, at a time when the coal mine that feeds all of them is shutting down. The deep part of the mine is never shown, however...

Pros: Good performances, great music, decent look at working class life in the UK Cons: Heavy-handed political agenda, too many incongruities
Truth to tell, I was quite disappointed in this film. It has a few good features, and some fine performances, but overall it simply didn't work for me. There are a few things to get straight right upfront:
1) This is not 'The Full Monty'....

Pros: Nice slice of English soap Cons: Some of the accents require severe concentration
British humor falls into that love/hate category and this is certainly no exception. Slurping through the muddled accents and overt traditions, you may tend to wonder if this country lifestyle is really something you'd enjoy...sort of our own down...

Pros: Good drama/comedy, not overly sentimental Cons: Bad dialog editing, needs some knowledge of UK history to appreciate fully
I'm a little bemused by the comparisons to "The Full Monty". While that movie was pretty much pure comedy, "Brassed Off" is definitely drama/comedy. I think a better comparison would be to Mike Leigh's films.
I imagine...

Pros: Some excellent acting and strong writing Cons: Predictable and an overly-political ending
A colliery band qualifies for the all-Britain finals, but the coal mine itself faces closure, so is there any point in playing? Shamelessly manipulative, it's true, and somewhat predictable, but the acting is excellent and at least it's in a good cause....

Pros: Ewan McGregor, great acting, good music, thought provoking & interesting story Cons: A bit of an emotional roller coaster.
As a fan of Ewan McGregor and his work, I was happy to stumble upon this film. The story revolves around a coal mine's brass band, and the small town's struggle to save their colliery, in order to save jobs for the working class. While the premise of ...

Pros: great history lesson Cons: a little predictable
Knowing a little bit about English and Welish history made this movie all that more better for me. Miners from these areas had little to live for and when the mines started closing many of them started to relocate (as my boyfriends parents did) All...

Pros: entertaining and watchable Cons: predictable
"Brassed Off" is a bit glib, but it's a fun piece, especially for someone like me who has a little bit of Red in my political views. A story of the brass band at a mine which is closing, the film is political without raging or inserting long...
