Pros: color, direction, flashbacks Cons: same as above
The Oracle says: Roy Ward has a Bacon number of 3.
Roy Ward was in Ugly, The (1997) with Rebecca Hobbs
Rebecca Hobbs was in Lost Souls (2000) with Elias Koteas
Elias Koteas was in Novocaine (2001) with Kevin Bacon *** ...
Pros: Unusual, surreal, lets you decide what's going on Cons: Somewhat strange ending, lets you decide what's going on
Like many good movies, The Ugly leaves room for different interpretations. The movie does not judge its characters, but rather gives enough - but barely enough - information for the audience to reach their own conclusions.
Pros: quite nearly everything. A powerful palliative to the extreme viruses of bad horror. Cons: everything except the ending -- but its very illogic could be seen as a plus.
The Ugly is such a strong and solid film that I seem to be able to form some theories to account for gaffes without suffering any further brain damage (see my dispatch re: 13 Ghosts, a horror film battle from whose usually mortal and severe wounds doctor...
Pros: Good movie, scary, interesting, original Cons: black blood?
Here's one of those gems that every horror fan should cry over missing for so long, especially after watching our favorite genre be bombarded by the teen drama junk that hits theaters today.
THE UGLY puts independent horror films to shame....
Seriously, it was my roommate's idea to even rent this flick...I wanted nothing to do with it. The film is mostly from new zealand (if you can't tell by the constant accents)...so let me talk about the plot.
Pros: Surrealism, Camera Effects, Acting, The "visitors" Cons: The over-abundance of weird characters, although they're probably part of the surrealism.
Scott Reynold's THE UGLY is a film that goes much deeper than the average modern thriller. It is a chilling and surrealistic study of a killer (Paolo Rotundo) who is kept in an institution. He had a rough life: he was always being abused, and is called...
Pros: A nice deviation from the normal pop-culture movie Cons: may not appeal to those who live by the Hollywood Standard, but don't let that stop you
Does he really see his tormentors, or is he just a cold-blooded killer?
I rented this movie after only seeing a preview of it, but the strange scenes caught my interest. The first thing noticeable is that it is definitely a low-budget film....
Pros: Visually stylish and well acted Cons: Sacrifices coherence for cheap shocks
Dr. Karen Shoemaker (Rebecca Hobbs), a psychiatrist, visits a weird, vaguely futuristic mental institution to prepare an evaluation of Simon Cartwright (Paolo Rotondo) a serial killer. In revealing his past to her, Simon plays various mind games with...
Yet another serial killer springs to celluloid life in a low-budget New Zealand thriller written and directed by film first-timer Scott Reynolds who admits to being influenced by Sam Raimi and Hitchcock (no bad thing I would have thought).
Pros: It's an amazing film Cons: I can't think of any
I'm a huge horror film fan and every once in a while I like to see something completely fresh and new. This film, "The Ugly" is exactly that...delving into the mind of a serial killer in a most unusual and refreshingly cinematic way. Basically...
I first heard about The Ugly by renting a compilation DVD called "Boogeymen", the "killer compilation" of horror movies.
The first thing that drew me in was Paolo Rotondo as Simon Cartwright, the main focus of the story. Nice eye candy for the ladies! After that, was "The Visitors", his victims come back to haunt him to kill again. Very creepy looking indeed.
Simon's character is wrecked by past tragedy, that I think a lot could relate to. He wasn't the sharpest kid in school, and he got picked on for it. So, he's not the picture-perfect-brady bunch lead we've all become accustomed to.
Go rent this movie! I assure you, you won't be disappointed
