  • Worms-eye View

Jun 27, 2012 by spelvini is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Movies
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: creepy and surprising and well-acted
Cons: so off-kilter it makes you laugh

Summary: Originally released in the United States as Creepers, running 82 minutes, Phenomena from 1984 by the Italian Dario Argento plays best at the 110-minute version complete with plenty of inventive and bloody murder scenes and a bizarre ending that includes ... read more

  • Dario Argento's PHENOMENA, or "Lady of the Flies" (Anchor Bay Collection DVD review).

    Jun 16, 2008 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Grotesque fairy tale cum insane rollercoaster ride well-directed and performed by Connelly and Pleasance.
Cons: The plot is muddled, the metal music out of place, reminiscent of "Friday the 13th."

Summary: PHENOMENA was one of those movies that didn't exactly win me over the first time I watched it. It could have been because I ended up renting the R-rated scissor job version called Creepers, which was distributed by New Line Cinema and ... read more

  • Argento gets a bit buggy in Phenomena!

    Jan 3, 2008 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Classic ending, good actors, interesting plot. A memorable film.
Cons: The ending may not be what you expect, surreal, plot is a little thin.

Summary: In 1985 Argento came out with a movie that was released, cut and sliced like many of the characters in his movies, as Creepers. I never had the displeasure of seeing this movie and instead managed to see it correctly the first time out. The film was ... read more

  • Pre-Halloween Chills from Italian Horrormeister Dario Argento: Phenomena

    Oct 12, 2003 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Stylishly directed; beautifully photographed; nicely scored; atmospheric
    Cons: Ridiculous plot elements

Summary: Filmed on location in Switzerland, Phenomena (initially released in the U.S. in a heavily truncated version titled Creepers) isn't generally considered one of Dario Argento's best and it's plain to see why. To quote ... read more

  • Dario Argento's Phenomena: (A Friday The 13th Writeoff Entry)

    Sep 13, 2002 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Creepy, atmospheric, beautifully photographed, and well acted
Cons: The revelation of the killer, while satisfying, makes little sense in retrospect; some music

Summary: [I have to admit, I gave serious consideration to actually writing this Friday the 13th Scary review of John Travolta's Phenomenon instead. I mean, Holy Cow, Travolta urinating on the grave of Flowers For Algernon, romancing maudlin Kyra ... read more

  • Dario Argento's failed experiment.

    Mar 25, 2002 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: Great effects. Solid acting.
Cons: Too wild for its own good.

Summary: Phenomena is a film that has had in interesting history. It was originally release in the U.S. under the title Creepers and shorn of over 20 minutes of footage. The cut version was the one I had originally seen (and which was my introduction to the ... read more

  • "Dario Argento's Phenomena"

    Aug 29, 2001 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Haunting imagery; beautiful violence; great plot twists; stylistic camera movements
    Cons: None

Summary: "Phenomena", Italian gore maestro Dario Argento's near top notch melding of his trdiational giallo murder mysteries and his earlier supernatural tinged films, is quite simply one of the best Italian cinema films I have ever had the sheer ... read more

  • The Embodiment of Extremely Twisted Cinema-- Dario Argento's Phenomena

    Jun 28, 2001 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: The direction, acting, score, etc.
    Cons: Some unnecessary music

Summary: 1985/A.K.A. Creepers/Starring: Jennifer Connelly, Donald Pleasance, Daria Nicolodi, Fiore Argento (briefly), and Michele Soavi (also briefly) Released the same year as Lamberto Bava's Demons (which was scripted in part by ... read more

  • Solid Argento Movie, Not His Best

    Mar 13, 2001 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: Interesting plot
Cons: Had to have plot explained to me

Summary: After I saw Creepers, I was mildly impressed, especially after seeing Argento's better films (Deep Red & Trauma). Usually Argento movies are "who dun its" which this movie started as, but quickly the killer(s) were narrowed down since not may characters ... read more

  • One of Argento's Best

    Mar 13, 2001 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Intense and frightening, good acting, complex plot
    Cons: The ending lacked something

Summary: I love this film! Connelly is perfect as the girl with strange psychic powers [she communicates with insects]. Like Suzy Banyon from Suspiria, she undergoes one abuse after another, as she gets involved, by accident, into the murder ... read more

  • "That bitch, stealing Paul Corvino!"

    Nov 12, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: A fun, well-made film, with surrealistic touches and an insane plot
Cons: The "Creepers" version is ridiculously cut

Summary: Brilliantly twisted, hilariously sinister, I've never seen a movie with quite the mix of humor (intentional or otherwise), horror, and campy spectacle that "Phenomena" has. It comes from around the end of Argento's middle period, and combines ... read more

  • Argento's Favorite

    Aug 31, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Wonderfully bizarre story, great visuals, Connelly and Pleasence
Cons: Plot gets a little cloudy

Summary: Yes, Argento does indeed call this his favorite film, yet most people would never consider this movie worthy of the classic standing that other Argento films such as “Deep Red” or “Suspiria” have. I feel that’s really kind of a shame since this is such ... read more

  • Insects unite to form-INSECTOCRON!

    Jul 19, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Jennifer Connelly, unpredictable story, Argento
    Cons: continuity errors(minor)

Summary: Phenomena: Dario Argento It wasn't until i joined epinions that i finally discovered Dario Argento. I've never heard of him prior to this point mainly because horror movies never piqued my interest. When i started reading some horror movie ... read more

  • Anchor Bay's DVD is a Gem!

    Jun 28, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: Great Movie, Great DVD
    Cons: More Andi Sexgang, please!

Summary: Dario Argento: the man's films seem to be haunted and hunted by some deranged editing-room floor slasher who enjoys chopping up his movies to the point where they become REALLY incoherent. Not that Dario's films are potential award-winners for their ... read more

  • A Pitiful Disappointment

    Mar 11, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: NONE
Cons: No trademark lighting, or gore effects, dubbing is terrible. So is everything else.

Summary: PHENOMENA is one of the worst films I have ever seen. It lacks a lot of the blood that is a trademark of Dario Argento films, and lacks any suspense. And the dubbing is so bad, it had me laughing when I should have been scared out of my wits. The ... read more
