Pros: Exciting opening scene, realistic Ancient Roman setting, superb acting Cons: The cons are negligible
Gladiator is a superbly made movie about a Roman General named Maximus who was well respected by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius and the people of Rome. His troubles began when the emperor's ambitious son Commodus resented his father's preferrence for...

Pros: Epic story telling at its best. Good all round & very consistent. Cons: Nothings perfect but this comes close.
I don't want to hype this film up so much that when you see it you'll be disappointed but its definitely on my list of all time favourites. I really enjoy films but rarely go to the cinema so seeing this film three times at the cinema was a record...

Pros: Action, adventure, revenge, special effects, a great guy flick Cons: Bad dialogue, predictable plot, some performances are terrible
A hand running through fields of grain... Red petals falling softly on our hero... Sunbeams shining into the Coliseum...
It's the subtle aspects of Gladiator that make parts of this film better than Braveheart. However, Russell...

Pros: Cinematography, Reliable, yet well done, plot Cons: Some plot questions left unanswered for better or worse, plot could have been fleshed out even more
Let me state from the start that I'm jumping into the fray in support of Gladiator. I will also admit a fondness for Ridley Scott's directing (Blade Runner) and Russell Crowe's acting (LA Confidential). This is one of the few movies that has come out...

Pros: Russell Crowe is Terrific Cons: Slow Pace / Action Could Be Better
The Roman Empire has risen again. At least in the movies. It’s been over 30 years since a legitimate campaign was made to restore the Coliseum to the big screen. Kubrick’s Spartacus and Anthony Mann’s The Fall of the Roman Empire immediately spring to...

Pros: Russell Crowe. The Colosseum. The opening battle and gladiator scraps. Music, sets and special effects. Cons: Ticks off all the entertainment boxes very well, but not a very deep ancient epic.
If you really want to get down to it, the Best Picture Oscar for 2000 should have gone to the brilliant Billy Elliott. It's a much more rounded and wholly satisfying film than this or that thing about hiding tigers and crouching dragons, or whatever it...

Pros: An Epic in every sense Cons: Too Gory
25 years ago I saw Ben Hur on TV, probably one of the greatest films ever made, a true Epic. Last week I saw Gladiator, I thought this feels like Ben Hur & Sparticus blended together. Gladiator is the first Epic film made for 20 years or more. It has...

Pros: Beautifully shot. Cons: Historically a mite Ridleyed.
Maximus?
Forget it. Emperor Marcus Aurelius, author of twelve volumes on Stoicism and father of an ingrate named Commodus, was busily wiping out Germanic tribes on the Danube when he got very ill and Commodus succeeded him (in Vienna) at age...

Pros: fantastic cinematography, excellent special effects, exciting action sequences Cons: not a one
GLADIATOR begins on a cold morning in a forest as Roman soldiers await word from their general. They watch as their emissary returns from his mission to persuade the northern tribesmen to give up their hopeless battle, his decapitated body the...

Pros: Visually Interesting, Crowe's Strong Performance, The First Half is Wonderful Cons: Uneven Performances by the Rest of the Cast, Poorly-conceived Second Act
Ridley Scott's Gladiator has a split-personality, and, unfortunately, only one of it's personalities is worth getting to know. The better of the two makes a bold, beautiful statement in the very first frames of the film, as we move through an...

Pros: Lavishly filmed; solid plot; good acting Cons: Too much gore at times
One of the best signs that I’m enjoying a movie is that I don’t check my watch to see how long the movie is running. And in the case of a film that is somewhat longer than average, like Gladiator, that is especially true.
It’s been a...

Pros: Captivating, Great Acting, Excellent Plot Cons: Maximus dies in the end (boo hoo)
Review of Gladiator (June 29, 2000)
I just saw this movie last night at the theater. Before I went to the movie, I checked the reviews and everyone seemed to like this movie. Let me tell you, it was fantastic! This was the best movie I have...

Pros: Fight scenes were good, that's about all. Cons: Way too long, no character development at all, plot is tired and predictable, uninteresting dialogue.
Gladiator is perhaps one of the laziest films ever made, it's that simply. It is definitely not an epic by any means at all. The characters are boring, the plot is tedious, and the fight scenes are the only reason this film gets two stars.
I...

Joaquin Phoenix (Commodus)
Connie Nielsen (Lucilla)
Oliver Reed (Proximo)
