Pros: Terrific satire of the doggie world. Cons: Despite the PG13 rating, this might not be suitable for most kids.
It's crass, it's political. It can also be funny and self-absorbed. No, not the government arena, the one at your local dog show. Often ridiculed, this can be a place of decit, backstabbing, and some shenanigans that you'd never assoicate with our...

Pros: Christopher Guest (Princess Bride's Count Rugen) proves he's one of the smartest satirists in Hollywood Cons: Some of the jokes and improv fall flat

Pros: Maybe - just maybe - Fred Willard. Cons: This is supposed to be a comedy? I didn't laugh once.
BEST IN SHOW purportedly tells the story of a group of dog fanciers who enter their dogs in a dog show. The problem is that I wasn't convinced by the script that this was the story.
Told in a stream-of-consciousness fashion similar to that...

Pros: At times hilarious, and characters that are deliciously ridiculous. Cons: Mean spirited in mocking some seriously disturbed people who make dogs their whole world.
Best in Show is a scathing attack against, of all people, Dog Show freaks. This movie has generally the same appeal as the Jerry Springer show, that is that you feel generally superior to everyone in the film. The film follows several sets of...

Pros: VERY funny improv performances Cons: 'Mockumentary' format is not for everyone
This movie doesn't quite go to 'eleven', but those enjoyed the 'mockumentary' format that 'This is Spinal Tap' pioneered will be ready for 'Best in Show'. Those who didn't 'get' 'Spinal Tap' would probably be better off two screens over watching that new...

Pros: Improvised dialogue and performances results in comic gold. Cons: It's a little too light (and over too quick)
Considering the cult status of This is Spinal Tap (1984) and critical acclaim of Waiting for Guffman (1997), it's hardly a surprise that Christopher Guest (star of Tap, writer/star of Guffman) has chosen to take the mockumentary route once again. This...

Woof, Woof !
by neahcat ,Apr 04 '05
Pros: It had a short theater run. Cons: It was released on DVD and video.
If you haven't seen it, be very glad. I saw the DVD last night and I am thankful that I didn't waste a theater trip on this canine woofer.
The humor in this movie is a direct descendant of 1970's Mad magazines except that Mad had better writers. Talk about out of touch. These guys spend all their energy pounding feeble stereotype character jokes from 30 years ago combined with camera aware technique that makes you want to suspend the painful disbelief that you are actually watching this junk (are the writers getting on a bit, they hate everyone including the audience?)
Apparently there was little direction and the actors ad libbed a lot. Boy does it show. Eugene Levy is particularly abysmal amongst a bestial herd of lame or confused actors. His predictable loser character is as flat as a pancake. Considering he co-wrote this thing, he has no excuse for his pathetic delivery, it just looks like he is constantly improvising.
A far better satirical movie would have been one that documented these clowns actually making this movie.
