Best in Show: Howlingly funny parody of the dog show world

by telynor telynor is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Movies, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Jul 16 '02
Pros: Terrific satire of the doggie world.
Cons: Despite the PG13 rating, this might not be suitable for most kids.
It's crass, it's political. It can also be funny and self-absorbed. No, not the government arena, the one at your local dog show. Often ridiculed, this can be a place of decit, backstabbing, and some shenanigans that you'd never assoicate with our...

Pros: Hilarious satire about the world of dog competitions
Cons: None

Christopher Guest’s Best Barkumentary

by Grouch Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, May 30 '01
Pros: Christopher Guest (Princess Bride's Count Rugen) proves he's one of the smartest satirists in Hollywood
Cons: Some of the jokes and improv fall flat
When I was a mere soft-headed lad of pre-puberty, I was in love with a dog.

His name was Shane, he was a Chocolate Labrador Retriever and, to me, he represented everything good about life. My dog was a warm island in an increasingly-baffling...

Pros: Fred Willard, Jane Lynch, Larry Miller
Cons: Sense of humor too gentle for subject matter
Best In Show is a comedy about champion show dogs, and the humans who dote on them. Told in a documentary style, it tells the tale of one year in the lives of the owners of five dogs, and the owners' efforts to make their pets champions. For each...

Here at Bitch, We Focus on the Lesbian Purebred Dog Owner

Pros: Best in Show goes after mean-spirited people . . .
Cons: . . . in a mean-spirited way.

Best dogs. Worst people.

by Vormancian Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Aug 13 '01
Pros: Excellent comedic effort.
Cons: Distant at times.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that it’s okay to make fun of people. There are, certainly, some rules to the people you can make fun of (or the sets of people you can make fun of), but surely there are some. That being said,...

Euthanize this movie.

by achoo , Oct 09 '00
Pros: it was less than 90 minutes long, there was no sticky film on the theatre floor
Cons: very few laughs, poor character development, minimal plot, SO many missed opportunities for humor
I must have walked into the wrong movie theatre. Yeah, that's it. Best In Show has gotten such great reviews, that I'm certain I must have seen some other movie. The movie that I saw was lousy.

Cons: Several of the gags fall flat; Fred Willard is annoying.

Best In Show -- A Doggone Funny Film!

Pros: It ended well, I guess
Cons: I was bored, the jokes weren't funny, I wasted my money

Pros: Funny, Decent - if understated - acting, Great idea
Cons: So tongue-in-cheek sometimes that it's slow, Some characters are painfully annoying

by Chad9976 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Dec 28 '07
Pros: Smart, clever, original concept, excellent performances and FUNNY!
Cons: Either you get it or you don't.

Pros: The funniest movie of the year
Cons: Christopher Guest doesn't make movies often enough

Improv is Art!

by BrickHaus , Dec 12 '00
Pros: Great acting, funny dialogue
Cons: What cons?
this film tickled my comedic tastebuds by addeing something new to an old idea. Improv comedy at it's finest can be found at its best in the pooch contest film. Before we get totally nuts, let's look at the plot...

My review about "Best In "Show"

by danasnodgrass , Nov 03 '00
Pros: a pleasant little film
Cons: not really worth the full ticket price
I went to see "Best In Show" because I am an animal lover and I heard
a lot of good things about this movie. I found "Best In Show" to be a
pretty nice little flick with a few chuckles in it but there was nothing

Best in Blow, IMHO

by Kidnykid , Nov 08 '02
Pros: Maybe - just maybe - Fred Willard.
Cons: This is supposed to be a comedy? I didn't laugh once.
BEST IN SHOW purportedly tells the story of a group of dog fanciers who enter their dogs in a dog show. The problem is that I wasn't convinced by the script that this was the story.

Told in a stream-of-consciousness fashion similar to that...

A new (hopefully very small) genre: The mocking dogumentary

by socnorb777 , Aug 26 '01
Pros: At times hilarious, and characters that are deliciously ridiculous.
Cons: Mean spirited in mocking some seriously disturbed people who make dogs their whole world.
Best in Show is a scathing attack against, of all people, Dog Show freaks. This movie has generally the same appeal as the Jerry Springer show, that is that you feel generally superior to everyone in the film. The film follows several sets of...

Best for Laughs

by dreylem , Oct 24 '00
Pros: VERY funny improv performances
Cons: 'Mockumentary' format is not for everyone
This movie doesn't quite go to 'eleven', but those enjoyed the 'mockumentary' format that 'This is Spinal Tap' pioneered will be ready for 'Best in Show'. Those who didn't 'get' 'Spinal Tap' would probably be better off two screens over watching that new...

Best in Show worthy of a title

by baboonvideo , Jun 15 '01
Pros: Improvised dialogue and performances results in comic gold.
Cons: It's a little too light (and over too quick)
Considering the cult status of This is Spinal Tap (1984) and critical acclaim of Waiting for Guffman (1997), it's hardly a surprise that Christopher Guest (star of Tap, writer/star of Guffman) has chosen to take the mockumentary route once again. This...

Woof, Woof !
by neahcat ,Apr 04 '05
Pros: It had a short theater run.
Cons: It was released on DVD and video.
If you haven't seen it, be very glad. I saw the DVD last night and I am thankful that I didn't waste a theater trip on this canine woofer.

The humor in this movie is a direct descendant of 1970's Mad magazines except that Mad had better writers. Talk about out of touch. These guys spend all their energy pounding feeble stereotype character jokes from 30 years ago combined with camera aware technique that makes you want to suspend the painful disbelief that you are actually watching this junk (are the writers getting on a bit, they hate everyone including the audience?)

Apparently there was little direction and the actors ad libbed a lot. Boy does it show. Eugene Levy is particularly abysmal amongst a bestial herd of lame or confused actors. His predictable loser character is as flat as a pancake. Considering he co-wrote this thing, he has no excuse for his pathetic delivery, it just looks like he is constantly improvising.

A far better satirical movie would have been one that documented these clowns actually making this movie.
