I am now stupider for seeing this movie.

by arkaine , Aug 05 '01
Pros: None
Cons: Acting, cinematography, storyline... man, just the whole movie.
Last night I got a chance to see Moulin Rouge. Some friends and I went to a drive-in to see Dr. DoLittle and that movie in a Double Feature. I wasn't expecting to be impressed very much... in fact, I was expecting the movie to be what the previews had...

A very strange movie

by schnappsers , Jun 13 '01
Pros: Most of the music was familiar
Cons: Movie was far too weird and ending given away too early
I have never seen as many people get up and leave a movie as I saw leave Moulin Rouge. Having seen some previews, I wasn't expecting a totally conventional movie, but what I saw was not at all what I expected. Going into the movie, I assumed that it...

Big Budget, Tedious Movie

by norwallace , Jun 17 '01
Pros: Some nice visuals, a few good laughs.
Cons: When are they going to break into "Muskrat Love"?
Let's get one thing straight right up front. I'm one of those people who always found the love songs in musicals excrutiating, especially if the theme was played to death. I'd hang on, yawning, waiting for the exciting numbers, the showstoppers, the...

Look! It's a Red Winmill!

by izzygirl , Aug 05 '01
Pros: It's a musical! Winmills, awesome music!
Cons: Sometimes is just didn't make sense...
I wanted to see it, true, but I wasn't expecting much at all. Another souless love story that covers itself up with an impressive cast and nice set pieces.

Hmph. Nice set pieces indeed... or should I say gorgeous. You'll notice that the...

New level of filmmaking reached

by tkluger , Jun 04 '01
Pros: Pushes the art form to a new extreme
Cons: Actors & Actresses who are not singers should not sing
Faults first-
Nicole Kidman's singing and acting was not the finest thing, but I still think she was wonderful.
Ewan McGregor's singing was not the finest thing, but he did a solid job also
It needs to be remembered that these are Actors...

Moulin Rouge =(

by phernduke , Jul 26 '02
Pros: Being able to return the blockbuster video knowing I didn't buy the movie.
Cons: having to sit through it and watch in horror and disgust
That's right, boys and ghouls, it's time for another round of the Angry Cuban's Movie Report. And yes, the title just does happen to translate as "It tickles my bowels with disgust." A fitting description, to say the least.

We all remember -...

Who knew the genre would survive?

by emmafrost , Jun 20 '01
Pros: Gorgeous cinematography and imagery. Creatively artistic and emotional.
Cons: Not for the average moviegoer...
Perhaps I’m a little too mad for these kinds of movies…But whenever something a little different comes along I get incredibly excited. Take for instance Moulin Rouge: A film that lured me in through the clever demise of HBO specials and long tedious...

Don't Expect Much

by jen16 , Jun 03 '01
Pros: good dancing,great background
Cons: everything else
I saw Moulin Rouge yesterday. I was expecting a wonderful movie since I had heard such good things about it,although I had heard bad reviews as well. I went in optimistic and came out very disapointed.

The movie is set in Paris,in 1900. A...

Spectacular, Spectacular!

by keg226 , Jun 06 '01
Pros: Beautiful, fun, romantic, and everything in between
Cons: the first thirty minutes
Spectacular, Spectacular!

Although strangely easy to hate within the first thirty minutes, Moulin Rouge verifies itself the rest of the way through, proving that it is spectacular, spectacular!

What I mean by...

Absolute Mind Candy - Can Can I see it again?!

by Deandra , Jul 16 '01
Pros: Very entertaining in a totally mesmerizing way. It's everything you want all rolled together.
Cons: Wished the performance was live so that I could give the cast a standing ovation.
Silly me for being such a skeptic. The idea of a film set in turn of the 20th century Paris incorporating modern music? Nonsense I thought. The prospect of Nicole Kidman & Ewan McGregor singing thier way through it? HAH!! Not a chance was my impression....

Theatrical Cinema or Cinematic Theatre?

by dayvbrown , May 25 '01
Pros: A spectacle the likes of which you have never seen. ever.
Cons: Some will find the story lacking, but they seem to be missing the point
The long awaited third feature of Australian Director Baz Luhrmann has finally hit our screen, and hit is the only word i can use to describe it. Starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman as two ill fated lovers in Bohemian Paris of 1900 the film follows...

A testament to the joys of transient pleasures.

by AndrewHowe , May 20 '01
Pros: Astonishing visuals.
Cons: Everything else.
Labelling a film "an exercise in style over substance" is hardly a compliment, but I doubt Baz Luhrmann would take it to heart. His back catalogue provides ample evidence that he's prepared to sacrifice every aspect of a film's production to the gods of...

The Sparkling Diamond Needs Voice Lessons

by indigomoon , Jul 14 '01
Pros: Uniquely stylized.
Cons: Sentimental, cloying, lurid.
Moulin Rouge is the cinematic equivalent to riding a tilt-a-whirl at a seedy carnival for two hours. It was entertaining for all of about three minutes. After that,as the lights, color and music conglutinate into a sickening amalgam, all you can do is...

I laughed and cried

by mariansmith74 , May 28 '01
Pros: Beautiful visuals, fast-paced, romantic, very funny, catchy songs
Cons: Definitely not for everyone
I laughed and cried - almost at the same time - and that's no small feat either for myself or the makers of this movie. Baz Luhrman and company (makers of the comparable Strictly Ballroom) have done it again with a bigger budget, creative use of pop...

A Spectacular Spectacular Spectacle

by lli_wright , Jun 01 '01
Pros: Inventive, engrossing, visually captivating, choice selection of popular songs
Cons: Feels too long
Moulin Rouge will certainly be the most controversial movie this year because it defies conventional Hollywood and steps outside the box. It is everything that guarantees a flop: part opera, part love story, part music video, part silly and illogical....
