Pros: The setting, John Hurt's role, some interesting questions about morality. Cons: But it never gets to above the tepid stage.
Having heard both negative and positive things about this one, I decided to check it out of my local library. (Hint for movie fans -- do try to take a peek at what your local library has to offer, you can save a bundle in rental fees...) Since I try to...

Pros: Romance, gorgeous scenery, interesting story Cons: The accents were unrealistic
I enjoyed the poignant old-fashioned love story, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, which was set in the beautiful Greek island of Cephalonia during World War II. The magnificent scenes of the almost blindingly clear Mediterranean Sea ,shimmering in the...

Pros: John Hurt, the music and the scenery Cons: No chemistry between Cage and Cruz
"Captain Corelli's Mandolin" is almost an old fashioned love story. I say almost because unfortunately the two main characters are played by fine actors who are not believable as lovers. I really like Nicolas Cage as a normal rule but he and Penelope...

Pros: The odd but thoughtful relationships between three of the main male stars. Cons: Penelope and Nicholas - absolutely no chemistry.
Dear Penelope,
I've never seen any of your other films and before I saw the trailers for Captain Corelli's Mandolin, I didn't even know of your existence. When I saw the trailer, I was intrigued because it looked like one of those...

Pros: Cage & Cruz work well. John Hurt gives a hell of a performance. Cons: nothing new, perfectly ordinary
Captain Corelli's Mandolin is a living cliché. This beauty of a film won me over though. The film is your standard "been there-done that" type of film, but it works. Nicolas Cage and Penélope Cruz ooze charm and it's the most splendid...

Pros: Excellent acting; good story line Cons: Weak ending
I have always liked Nicholas Cage, and and confess that I feel his acting ability has come a long way through the years. And while I have not seen much of Penilope Cruz, I was impressed with the way she interpreted her character in this movie.

Pros: Beautiful locations, great performances. Cons: Cage's accent.
After the disappointing false start of Woman on Top, May looks set to be Penelope Cruz month in the UK, as she stars in three films on the release schedule. Captain Corelli's Mandolin is without a doubt the most eagerly-awaited of...

Pros: Sweeping cinematography, luscious score, and John Hurt's performance. Cons: Because of the shallow, under-developed, over-simplified screenplay, it's not emotionally engaging.
Based on Louis de Bernieres's epic best-selling novel, this romantic drama begins in 1940 in idyllic Argostoli, where Pelagia (Penelope Cruz), the serious, proud daughter of Dr. Iannis (John Hurt), the village physician, is to become betrothed to...

Pros: Beautiful scenery, pleasant story. Cons: Odd accents, tries a smidge too hard.
I haven’t read the book. I’m a bad person. Everybody has read the book. It was the only book to be seen with on the beach last summer. The normal bleating that the film won’t be as good as the book won’t be coming from me. No siree I’m setting the...

Pros: Romantic chemistry between Cage and Cruz, unusually presented history of World War II, Grecian beauty Cons: Nothing wrong with the picture, the audiences need Miss Manners
I loved the movie but I left the theatre with almost a nervous breakdown from cell phones ringing (the first one I tried to block out, but the next ring a man answered and carried on a conversation,) the lady next to me talked incessantly and wore a...

Pros: Strong relationships, good character development Cons: Weak ending, some slow scenes
"Captain Corelli's Mandolin" is not simply a love story - it's much more. Though the main plot pivots on the love between a beautiful and intelligent Greek girl, Pelagia, and Antonio Corelli, a captain in Mussolini's invading army during World War II,...

Pros: I want to live on Cephallonia and I want John Hurt to be my father. Cons: Cage's Italian accent is laughable; the inept romantic leads almost spoil the movie.
There are certain actors who, within certain narrowly defined parameters, can do a workmanlike job. But take those same performers and put them in anything that demands range or actual talent, and they fall flat on their faces.
Nicholas Cage...

Pros: Great Scenery, Great Story.... Cons: None
The year is 1940, the setting is Cephalonia, a small Greek island, beautiful beyond words. Crystalline, blue water rushes onto beautiful rocky coasts. The Germans are trying to take over the world and they are using everyone and every place they can to...

Pros: The Greek countryside. Cons: The movie was poor at generating its romance.
Firstly, I'd like to say that I usually hate predictable romantic comedies. (But this movie fits into the Romance genre, not Romantic Comedy, that's why I gave it a go)
Many reviewers have said that Captain Corelli's Mandolin is a really bad...

Pros: The cinematography is a sight to behold. Cons: Nic Cage and especially Penelope Cruz certainly aren't.
Take a well-regarded novel, an epic historical setting, an Academy Award-winning actor, the director of a recent Best Picture winner, and the current flavor-of-the-year actress, and you get Captain Corelli's Mandolin, one of the year's most...
