Pros: Great soundtrack, Coogan's humor, Artistic Direction Cons: Big historical inaccuracies
“I think it was Scott Fitzgerald that said: “American lives don’t have second acts.” Well this is Manchester! We do things differently here!” ~ Tony Wilson 24 Hour Party People (2002) is a part fact/part ...
Pros: The music, the music, the music! Cons: A little too lengthy.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Manchester bands such as Joy Division, New Order, and the Happy Mondays roared into prominence and helped shove disco, hippie rock, and glam into their musical graves. Continuing the spirit of innovation,...
Throughout its lifetime, rock n' roll has had its share of scenes and times. In the late 1960s, San Francisco was the place to be if you were into the sounds of the Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, and taking acid. In the late 70s, disco ruled at ...
How do you review a movie like 24 Hour Party People? Heck, how do you watch a movie like 24 Hour Party People? It suffers some serious sprawl even as it short-changes its subjects, trying to capture 20 years in two hours. It attempts to spotlight ...
Pros: Steve Coogan. Cons: I hate the music. Sorry.
I suspect the vast majority of Epinions members will never have heard of most the bands featured in 24 Hour Party People, the bizarre rockumentary that is apparently getting a US release. However, the greatest thing about the film is that...
Pros: Very entertaining, gives you a taste of the "underground" music experience of the time. Cons: Some gimmicky stuff, tough to follow for Americans not knowledgeable about 80's Manchester music scene
Tony Wilson, by what few accounts of read of him, is apparently a rather larger-than-life character. Besides being a (at least to my knowledge) a moderately successful TV personality in Britain, he was involved, behind the scenes, with many of the...
Pros: Funny/thoughtful, Great music, clever, Unusual subject Cons: Shot on HDTV- but you forget about that after a while
Just saw 24 Hour Party People and wanted to pipe in with a review. It tells the story of Factory records and the Manchester music scene of the early 80’s. Manchester brought us The Smiths, New Order, Oasis and a bunch of other bands that sound keeps...
Pros: English humor, witty, good portrayal of moments in history Cons: a bit slow, felt reeeeally long, irrelevant scenes
Like I said in another review on SLC PUNK, I'm not an expert on the scene and I won't pretend to be. I know nothing about punk music or where it came from. If I did, I probably would have enjoyed this film more. I am familiar with the rave...
Pros: A great history of the music scene in Manchester mid 70's thru the 80's Cons: nauseating camera use, kept checking my watch to see if it was almost over
Mistake number one- taking my husband and teenaged boys to this movie. The sixteen year old was fidgeting ten minutes into this movie, and the fifteen year old was checking his watch constantly.
Pros: brings back some great memories and the cameos were a pleasant surprise Cons: keith allen
as soon as i heard the mondays 24 hour party people kick in during the opening credits i felt at home straight away. memories came flooding back with the appearence of another great song or character that i had forgotten about over the past few years....
The Start & End: Joy Division & Happy Mondays by robfactory ,Jun 23 '04
Pros: Good humor and well developed. Cons: None really. I wish it would have gone a bit more into the bands.
First and foremost. If you are going to watch this movie you must be interested in the Brit/Manchester music scene. It mostly revolves around its rise and its musicians (Joy Division, The happy Mondays and Stone Roses). The movie follows the man who basically developed this scene by financing all of these bands. It goes as deep as to explore myths and situations that might have occured. I like the narrations inbetween situations. The actor who portrays the main character will do a side step and state "According to many this is how it went, but there's no real proof of the account." It's the same actor from Around the World in 80 Days. Overall this movie is educational if you want to know about the manchester scene and how it started watch it.
