The Rules of Attraction - Rules? In College? Ha!!

by millinocket millinocket is a Lead on Epinions in Movies, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Mar 08 '03
Pros: Abundant humor, fun to look at
Cons: Shallow characterizations, lack of plot
Okay, I’m a bit confused. While that may be a natural state in my case, this time I have cause. Just recently I watched the movie The Rules of Attraction. The blurb on the DVD describes a romance drama about a love triangle between three...

Are There Rules of Attraction? If There Are, Then I Must Not Be Following Them

by thevoid99 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Sep 02 '03
Pros: A Few Performances, Funny Moments, Soundtrack, & Cameos.
Cons: Messy Script & Direction, Awful Characters, & Failed Execution.
Since the arrival of “American Pie”, teenage sex comedies returned but in the process, so did many ...

"Rules Of Attraction": The Rules Are, There Are No Rules (D.R W/O)

by Simply_Crispy Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Sep 09 '04
Pros: Mind-bendingly good
Cons: A few too many needless sub-plots

Rules of Attraction: Failed to see any. No, wait: FAILED. Period.

by kuuleimomi Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Jul 12 '05
Pros: I love Ian Somerhalder and Shannyn Sossamon.
Cons: acting, the storylines, all the sex&drugs scene wear out after a while
I would watch this movie again any day for the following reasons: Ian Somerhalder, Shannyn Sossamon (they are hot), drugs and sex (frankly the emphasis on drugs and sex is slightly *ahem* overrated), but I’m not sure those are the reasons enough to ...

Physical, Mental, and Emotional Liberation.

by glvrican , Jul 30 '09
Pros: the plots, acting, characters
Cons: A bit too negative and way too much rewinding
Looking like a specific scene from the original American Pie, The Rules Of Attraction starts off with a girl named Lauren Hynde, who's caught speaking mid-sentence in narrative fashion, introducing characters Paul, Sean, and herself. She ...

Great movie; mediocre DVD.

by cgadbois , Feb 22 '03
Pros: Standout performance from James Van Der Beek, excellent ensemble and cameo performances.
Cons: No surround sound, no extra scenes, Carrot Top commentary track
I bought this DVD today, not having seen the movie before, because my wife loved author Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho - both the movie and the book - and I enjoyed director Roger Avary's screenplay work on Pulp Fiction. This movie...

If this is actually the college experience... consider trade school.

by surfur , Mar 26 '08
Pros: A wildly rapid and intriguing narrative style, some scorching performances and some very powerful scenes.
Cons: Too many characters are kept at arm's length and their experiences are kinda glossed over.
by Dane Youssef Roger Avary's "The Rules Of Attraction" is a look at the "experimentation" of college life. Alcoholism, drug abuse, suicide and sexual escapades. That's not to say that the movie is all about--oh wait, it pretty ...

Certainly an interesting film

by videodude , Jun 19 '03
Pros: Strange storyline, strong performances, and inventive film making techniques
Cons: Unlikable characters and ensemble narrative may seem somewhat confusing
A while back, I wrote a review of "The Rules of Attraction", but it was more along the lines of being a one minute movie review than an actual analysis. Considering I was relatively new to the Epinions website, I thought it'd be fair to really think ...
