Pros: Stephen Lang as Stonewall Jackson Cons: Way too long, boring battle sequences
Gods and Generals is an incredibly long and somewhat boring Civil War movie from the same people who made Gettysburg. This $60 million box office bomb, paid for by Ted Turner, stars Robert Duvall, Stephen Lang, and Jeff Daniels. As much as ...
Pros: Some excellent acting & cinematography. A very accurate portrayal of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. Cons: A bit to long for most folks.
I thought Gods and Generals was a good movie. That being said, It was nowhere near as good as Gettysburg which was released in 1993 and also directed by Ron Maxwell. Keep in mind I believe Gettysburg is among the best...
Pros: the landscapes, costumes, that it ended Cons: lack of direction, script, unbearable 3hours 36 minutes
I did not heed the warnings from the local entertainment review on Gods and Generals, I ignored the wearied cries of those that braved this movie before me, and I am paying the price today, still disturbed and disappointed. I am not the typical...
Pros: Historical accuracy, drama, cool war action, and acting. Cons: Too long for most people who don't like history.
Gods and Generals: A Civil War Film of Epic Proportions.
The American Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history, with over 620,000 deaths occurring between 1861 and 1865. Accurate portrayals of this conflict in the film industry...
Pros: The recreation of the Battle of Fredericksburg. Cons: Virtually everything else
Civil War buffs generally dont go to see movies about the Civil War to see good movies. They go to see Civil War movies because they cant get enough of the Civil War. If they get a good movie in the process, its gravy.
Pros: It eventually ends. Cons: It begins, last fours hours and accomplishes nothing.
Where to be begin. Take one of the most important events in the history of the United States, a bunch of melodramatic overacting, bad camera work and editing and cram it all into a short little film of four hours. And what you have is crap.
Pros: Historically accurate (mostly), giving viewers a good idea what the Southern rebellion was like. Cons: Unfocussed, with huge gaps in events, uncovered by any narrative.
Gods and Generals is the first (although second released) in a trilogy of films recreating the eastern front of the Slaveholders Rebellion (Civil War). The first film, Gettysburg, was a well-realized dramatization of ...
Pros: Historically accurate, realistic battle scenes, keeps the past remembered and alive. Cons: Some unnecessary dialogue, too long for those with short attention spans.

Pros: Anti-war message; the intermission in the middle of this 4 hour movie Cons: Movie was too LONG AND SLOW; MUMBLED LINES; no real plot
The film Gods and Generals is essentially an agonizingly boring and dull biography of the life of Stonewall Jackson during the Civil war. Jackson is shown as a preachy and annoying Bible-thumping/quoting evangelist who sees himself as the instrument of...
Pros: Historical accuracy in great detail, Jeff Daniels as Lt.Col. Chamberlain, Stephen Lang as Lt.Gen. Jackson. Cons: Excessive length, Victorian manners, excessively pro-southern tone.
I have just come from seeing "Gods and Generals", all four hours of it. Reviews thus far have been scathing, and not without some justification. First, let me state my credentials up front. I am a history buff and Civil War reenactor, so I liked this...
I eagerly awaited the 7 o'clock showing of the movie 'Gods and Generals'. It was Friday, opening night. And so it was to begin, and so I was to see the greatest war film of my lifetime! I will honestly say I was more than pleased; I was elated at...
Pros: A traditional take on the Civil War. Good acting. Cons: Bad writing, bad direction, terrible editing.
When I was a television reporter, I'll never forget talking to a historian that said you can never understand America until you come to grips with the impact of the Civil War. The cinematic tradition that's covered this subject has generally been...
Pros: Excellent cinematography, historical accuracy, good costumes Cons: Stultifyingly long and boring, mawkish stilted writing, no clear dramatic focus
First let me say that the reason I was looking forward to seeing this film was that I loved Gettysburg. Since Gods and Generals was made by pretty much the same set of people, I had high hopes for it, especially after I heard from some people involved...
Pros: Very accurate. Very very accurate. Cons: Biased, and drawn out.
2003s Gods and Generals was the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jeff Shaar. The film takes place during the Civil War's early years (1861-1863) before leading up to the decisive Battle of Gettysburg. As a history buff myself, I ...
