Pros: Fun and complicated premise, decent performances, good thriller aspects Cons: Pacing, weak special effects in places
I find the entire idea of chaos theory (layman's definition, of course, the mathematical definitions make my eyes glaze over) fascinating. That one small action can cause a virtual cascade of reactions eventually resulting in something enormous is ...
Pros: the acting is okay; the Theatrical Release-much better ending than Director's Cut Cons: overwhelmingly tragic on the whole; plot holes; disturbing
If from 2004s The Butterfly Effect you expect another silly Ashton Kutcher role like in Dude, Wheres My Car? and Just Married, you will be understandably upset that it appeals, if at all, to ones intellectual side in a ...
Pros: Director's Cut: a decent story with resolution
Theatrical cut: Nothing Cons: Dialogue, some performance and casting issues
If you happened to see this movie in the theater, then I have to say you MISSED a pretty good movie. Because the theatrical version was a mediocre fantasy thriller. But the Directors Cut, (available on the DVD) was an extraordinary story. ...
Genre: Thriller Sub-categories: Chaos Theory, Suspense Predictability: Somewhat Predictable Look-at-these: No Nudity Synopsis: A college bound Evan Treborn discovers that he possesses the power to alter events of ...
Let me share two things with you before I begin: 1) I don't watch That '70s Show, so I only know Ashton Kutcher from the media, really, and I have a positive impression of him. 2) I watched this film with three other people. Two of them ...
Pros: This film is not obviously stupid. Makes you think hard before it's stupidity is understood. Cons: Bad acting, bad dialogue, horrible characters, depressing themes, illogical plot, manipulative use of time travel.
WARNING: As it is quite impossible to properly critique this film without discussing the ending, this review will contain spoilers. Although The Butterfly Effect is a conversationally stimulating film to see with your friends, it does ...
Pros: Excellent acting, great plot Cons: Some unsettling subject matter
Movies dealing with Time travel have generally been interesting to me so I thought the Butterfly effect looked good. Unfortunately I had to wait a while before I could fully see the movie but when I did it was worth it. The film reminded me of Donnie ...
At some point, everyone looks back at some event in their life and wonders how things would have been different if they have fixed a few mistakes. What if you could not buy a car that turned out to be a lemon? What if you hadn’t fumbled when asking ...
Pros: Ashton Kutcher in a surprisingly good performance Cons: Too numerous to mention with the 15 word maximum.
Back in either 1980 or 1981 (memory fails me as to which is correct), Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Special Edition, was released, thereby heralding something new and different in movie-making, and in movie distribution: that ...
Pros: Acting, fresh approach to old concept Cons: Depiction of cruelty to animals
The enigmatic title of this 2004 film is explained with an epigram before the opening credits, in which an old proverb is cited, referring to how the simple movement of a butterfly’s wings can cause a typhoon halfway around the world. Basically, the ...
Pros: Tightly linked plots. Makes your head spin. Extremely different performance by Ashton. Cons: DVD menu not very intuitive to navigate. Hard to find subtitles.
I normally do not write a movie review, but after reading the other reviews, I feel that I have to say something from a different perspective. Originally, I intended to avoid talking about the specifics in the movie, and to only discuss the feelings I ...
Pros: Impressive cinematography, and some unique ideas. Cons: Nothing is ever done with those unique ideas. Plus, Ashton Kutcher.
Some films feel important, as if they have a purpose or a message, several even from last year. Unfortunately, The Butterfly Effect just thinks it's important and has a message to tell. Donnie Darko is a film that many of The Butterfly Effect's ...
Pros: Suspenceful, good plot, Amy Smart was AMAZING! Cons: Some people may be confused, Ashton could have been better at his role.
One day when on the phone with a friend who loves movies. He recommended three movies to me: "Far From Heaven", "The Butterfly Effect", and "Dreamcatcher". I have watched, loved, and reviewed "Far From Heaven", and the second film I watched was "The ...
Pros: Actors and actresses fit very well in this film.. Excellent story line.. Cons: Too good of a movie to have any cons ...
The Butterfly Effect is the premise of the chaos theory, which states that everything you do in life has a direct or indirect consequence; for example, a butterfly flapping its wings can result in a huge typhoon halfway across the world. That's the basis ...
Pros: The storyline is strangely compelling, Kutcher does better than expected. Cons: Execution is messy, plot holes, needs the audience to view without prejudice.
Ever wondered what you would do if you had the power to change the past? Imagine you could change that thing you said that upset your mother or perhaps take a different route to work that would have seen you avoid an accident. Eric Bress and J. Mackye ...
Pros: Very Suspenseful throughout, Ashton at his best! Well done background research Cons: Definitely not suitable for children! Rated R, due to language, sexual content, and traumatic events.
A movie theme that's been done many times: Time Travel. The Bill and Ted movies (which I find very hilarious), The Time Machine, Time Cop, Timeline... I can't remember the rest but it's been done a lot. This movie, by New Line Home Entertainment, is ...
Pros: Intelligent, moving, very well acted, good score Cons: A few plot holes, I thought the ending for the Theatrical Release was much better
I love it when a movie comes out that meets my expectations. Lord of the Rings, Spider Man 2, Signs. Each one I expected to be great, and great they were. But it is infinitely more satisfying when a great film comes seemingly out of nowhere to thrill ...
Pros: Brutal. Evil timing Cons: Too complex for some people.
Ashton Kutcher is an actor normally known for doing comedy films and buddy movies, but this movie opened some real doors for him to do more serious films. This was the only movie of his I really bought and liked. Amy Smart plays an instrumental role ...
Pros: Smart, suspenseful without being insanely graphic, well-put-together. Cons: Somewhat difficult to wrap your mind around, holes in the theory.
If you're like me, thinking about moving around in time and changing the past fills you with nothing but headaches and dread. This film shows why this is so. Although it hardly answers the contradictions which so often surround changing the past, it ...
Pros: Very original plot and good acting. Cons: Too tragic and depressing for even me.
For those who haven't seen it.... imagine this, what if you blacked out big chunks of your life at times? Like we're talkin hours...and say you got analyzed for this type of behavior...and your analysist made you write events in a journal, though you ...
Pros: Good movie premise, although it has been done before Cons: Mediocore results
I want to like Ashton Kutcher, I want to know what Demi sees in him. I want to understand Punk'ed, and find it funny. I want to think he's sexy, I know he was a model. Alas, I still don't get it (except for the one ending shot of him with hairless ...
Pros: Ashton Kutcher, script, sound effects, captivating, thought-provoking Cons: not very educated about Chaos Theory, editing, hard to understand, the overall structure
I have always considered Ashton Kutcher a comic who played for cheap laughs in films like "Dude, Where's My Car" or "Just "Married". I was wrong. After seeing "The Butterfly Effect", Kutcher is an actor who can carry dramatic films. More on that later. ...
Pros: Good performances, interesting look at time travel Cons: Serious logical missteps detract from the experience
I'm a sucker for a good time travel movie, so Butterfly Effect was a no-brainer. The premise is that Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher, in a surprisingly good performance from the stoner-cum-actor) was born with something of a curse. He frequently blacks ...
This movie has made it onto my 'top-thrillers' list because of all the excitement in it. This movie always kept you on your toes and next gave you an expected scene. Every moment was unexpected so that made it so exciting. Ashton Kutcher ...
Pros: Incredible new aged twist on an old premise - Great acting! Cons: I had a nightmare afterward!
I viewed this on demand from my local cable company last week and I was blown away. I really was not expecting much. The movie's star, Ashton Kuchner, had not really impressed me during his run on "That 70's Show" but my husband swore I would like it. ...
Pros: profound learning available if you think about it afterwards Cons: sound effects and certain parts that need not be that graphic
this is a shock to me in both ways. firstly, at how strong the sound effects were and scared me a bit esp when he returned to his blacked out days. secondly, this film is graphical and shocking in a profound way. Apart from objectively reflecting ...
Pros: good acting, excellent and unique plot Cons: none for this movie, but I wouldn't recommend the sequel.
If you like science fiction movies that are very complicated and suspenseful, then you will love this movie. You never know what is going to happen next so it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The main character, Evan, played by Ashton Kutcher, has ...
Pros: Great acting, great story, great ending Cons: None
This is one movie that left me pondering my life in whole. I mean, what would the world be like if I wasn't around? Would people be happier? Would things be better or worse? What would happen to my family and friends? That's what Evan (Ashton Kutcher's ...
I didn't want to watch this movie to begin with. I thought it would be boring by the beginning and I'm not much of a movie fan anyway. After the first two scenes it had me hooked. The young man who played Ashton Kutcher's character as a teen was amazing. I really hope to see this boy in more movies. The movie was all in all pretty good, but the whole thing was a bit gruesome and violent. The only thing I can really complain about was the director's cut, that was a little too gruesome to be considered as creative, unlike the idea they had in the theatrical version. This movie was interesting and full of ups and downs, I would recommend it for someone looking for a thriller...not for the faint of heart!!
Great Movie for Certain Tastes by voicesinmyhead ,May 05 '04
Pros: Good suspense, plot opens to main character at the same time as audience. Cons: Climax of movie is never really defined.
Have you ever been asked if you would have done something differently if given the chance to? What was your answer to that question? It may seem like everything would have worked out for the better, but in all reality would it have? As the movie correctly points out, according to the chaos theory, the simple flap of a butterfly's wings can disturb the atmosphere enough to cause a cyclone half way around the world in the future.
This movie takes this theory, along with the human emotions of regret and perhaps even selfishness, and combines them into a great story line.
The movie follows the life of a boy as he becomes a man, a boy that is a little different than others, in that he suffers blackouts. Only once you realize what the blackouts actually are can you fully appreciate the plot of the movie.
It's a great movie for anyone who enjoys suspense with a slightly out-of-the-ordinary touch.
Shoot the cast and producers by danhousman ,Nov 19 '04
Pros: This is among the worst movie experiences I have ever had. It ended. Cons: Traumatic subject matter, not funny, burning a dog alive for entertainment.
I went to this movie expecting either a clever movie like a Phillip K Dick based movie or a funny movie like Dude Where's My Car. Unfortunately it was neither funny or clever. What it was is disturbing for no apparent reason. The makers of the movie took on topics like child sex abuse, amputation, and burning a dog alive in a bag as ways to illustrate how interesting it would be if you could go back in time and change your future. This attempted shock value is so over the top and unnecessary that it made me want to walk out on the movie and to confront the film makers for both trivializing some major traumatic events and for trying to traumatize me as an audience member with such disgusting topics. If it weren't just the topics I could understand but trust me - It isn't funny or clever in the way that they present this stuff. It just looks like abuse of the abused.
Pros: Very action packed, keeps you on the edge of your seat! Cons: It is a movie you must watch and pay attention.
When i first heard about thois movie i thought it would be dumb, Ashton Kutcher was not that serious actor he portrayed in this movie. After I watched this movie i had a newfound respect for him. Ashton did an amazing job with his character and this movie. I was on the edge of my seat the whole movie, it is action packed, along with some drama. I believe this is a must see movie, you will not be disapointed.
The Butterfly Effect - Kinda creepy..... by sasori3 ,Aug 19 '04
Pros: Ashton can act, and the supporting cast is up to par. Good pacing also. Cons: Feels a little unfinished.
I have to say, that given his normal outings, I didn't think Ashton Kutcher was capable of much. I actually really took to his capable portraying of the main character. The one thing I will definitely make all aware of is the creepy and chilling concept at work in this movie. The concept of being able to reconfigure time through ones own repressed memory is severely intriguing and fairly disturbing. I guess if you wanted a sunshine and roses movie you wouldn't have rented this anyways. I will also add that the ending might toy with you depending on which version(director's cut or theatrical release) you watch. Some of the imagery may be a tad disturbing to you (think behaviours). I did talk to a group of friends that also watched this movie and everybody had their own findings and ideas about different parts. I highly recommend this movie for anyone looking for a detour from the normal.
