The Passion of the Christ Stirred A Storm Among Us....

by devilish_suga , Apr 10 '04
Pros: Visual, Costumes, Storyline, Keeps You Awake
Cons: Focused a lot on the violence/gore
Director: Mel Gibson Jesus Christ: Jim Cavaziel ****************************** ***************************** When I went to go see this movie, I really didn't know what all the fuss was about and now I understand, but not quite about the ...

Passion of the Christ - overly violent

by rez , Jul 08 '08
Pros: excellent visual effects, scenery
Cons: way too much time spent on torture
The movie could have been made more suitable for younger kids by spending less time on the overly detailed blood and gore and more time on the background. The violent scenes are way over the top -- to the point of actually being tiring, and even ...

He died for us.

by dontcry1991 , Mar 09 '04
Pros: Tells it like it is.
Cons: Not for young children just yet....
I respect Mel Gibson in what he has done so much more. But what he has done is made a film to make non-believers...believe. I went and went out bawling. It makes you think how selfish we can be and how much he suffered but prayed for those who condemned ...

The Passion of the Christ is an excellent film.
by brwneyedgrl ,Mar 02 '04
Pros: Good storyline.
Cons: The violence may be hard to watch for some.
After ignoring the bad press, I made a decision to watch The Passion of the Christ. It was a good depiction on the last 12 hours of Jesus. I've gone to church all of my life and prior to viewing the film had my own ideas about his last 12 hours on earth. The corporal cruelty and violence did not bother me as I was told these stories as a child. The scene of Jesus on the cross were vivid, and I left the theater in tears. This was a real soul cleansing movie and I encourage all to go.

Stirring and Encouraging
by ronman79 ,Sep 02 '04
Pros: Message; Non-hidden violence; Acting
Cons: Hints at Catholicism instead of just the Passion
"The Passion of the Christ" is not only a great film specimen, it is a great witness. It is great encouragement for believers, and tends to make even unbelievers think! I know that I left the movie theater wanting to be a better Christian.

One thing, among many, that sets this movie apart from others of it's kind is the obvious brutality. Mel didn't want to beat around the bush, and, I'm thankful for that. Even though it might not be the best for some audiences (kids...etc.) to view, the graphic scenes help remind us of the terrible pain and sorrow that Christ bore for all!
I highly recommend this movie for anyone!!!!!!

Intense. Epic. Moving. Numbing.
by smspf ,Feb 25 '04
Pros: Unless you are an android, you will leave the theater deeply moved.
Cons: Could have had more flashbacks of Christ's life, the teachings, the miracles, and so forth.
A good movie. Believe the hype, it is gory. However, I think a mostly accurate portrayal of Jesus' suffering. Dialogue in Latin and Aramic smacks of realism. Flashbacks during Christ's various torture are well placed and provide context.

Powerful almost beyond words
by wrytwingr ,Jan 27 '06
Pros: Beautifully created and acted- riveting and profoundly moving
Cons: Some inaccuracies slightly mar it for the few who know the Scriptures well
This movie, more than any other I have seen, focuses starkly and intensely on the subject at hand. Even so, the much-vaunted brutality it displays is mild compared to what actually happened to Jesus of Nazareth, Son of God and Messiah to all who believe in Him. Isaiah tells us in the 53rd chapter that He, Jesus, was beaten so badly that His face was unrecognizable. The worst torment He faced was taking upon Himself all the sin(s) of the world, and how can that be portrayed? Apart from a few historical inaccuracies, that would pass for poetic/artistic license in a less important subject, this film is as flawless as a talented professional like Mel Gibson could make. One hopes for a sequel that carries us into the New Testament book of Acts, while wondering if it could/would even come close to comparing with the Passion.

Vapid and boring
by frequently ,Apr 08 '04
Pros: Went to a free screening. The "haunting" musical theme song was nice.
Cons: Just boring and you know how it turnsout. Very biased; distortions of historical facts.
Just plain boring. 10 minutes of dialog and story, and 2 and a half hours of torturing Jesus. It should have been the other way around. Clearly, this was done to spread hate and nothing more. Total and blatant distortions of known historical facts. Movie makes Pontius Pilate appear to be as wonderful as Mother Teresa, and history says he was not quite that nice. Bottom line: it was just boring, boring and more boring. Even thought I went to a free screening, I felt cheated by wasting time. Violence for no particular reason. This movie was just a fantasy of a fantasy. Decent and intelligent people will be able to see through this hateful propaganda piece, but most just love Mel Gibson and his violent films, and will think it is a work of genius. How sad.

The Passion of the Christ
by rm13 ,Mar 29 '04
Pros: Extremely accurate, moving, touches anyone who sees it, portraits jesus like no one else
Cons: extremely violent and many children would not be able to see the film
The passion is an extremely accurate portrayal of Jesus and his pain and suffering to save his people. It starts with Jesus being sold to the Romans by his friend, Judas, and being taken in custody and beaten. He then is lashed upon by his own people and it is heartbreaking. He then is savagely beaten and spit on by the Romans. He is then forced in his weak state to carry the crucifix to his death. You can literally see the pain in his eyes as well as his friends and his mother Mary and several people I was with cried. It is deeply moving and I recommend to all except the youngest who may not be able to accep the violence. The characters were portraiyed in an excellent fasion and Mel Gibson brought heart and soul into the film with his excellent Directing. It is a spectacular work of art that almost all peoples of all worlds should see.

Passionate Movie
by forestengr ,Mar 01 '04
Pros: As close as you can get to what really happened, a life changer
Cons: Very graphic though fundamental to the movie
It is rare when you can find a movie that will move mountains but Passions of the Christ can do such that. Resounding screenplay, superb acting, can be wearing reading the subtitles, but you feel actually there listening to the Aramaic language, it makes you FEEL you are part.

It is graphic no doubt, think carefully about taking children but this is a must see, even if you aren't Christian. It makes you look at yourself, you weep, you cry, you get angry, emotion is all over this movie. I felt horrible after it but yet grateful, all of that suffering for me. This is not a movie but an event and I encourage everyone to go.

A Delicious Work of Fiction
by mrcinnamon ,Nov 29 '04
Pros: Lots of violence and drama and even a few laughs
Cons: People might think this actually happened in real life
I've always found the Bible to be a delighful fictive work filled with magical characters, wild stories, and a delicious dark side that more than makes up for its preachiness.

I have always been fond of the character of Jesus Christ who is the consummate archetypical mythelogical good guy.

This movie wonderfully brings this character to life in cinematic form, closely hewing to his adventures in the Bible and it's excellent viewing for believers and non-believers alike.

Fun!

Passion for the ages
by seraf ,Jun 03 '04
Pros: A potent message on the meaning of sacrifice
Cons: Frequent and unflinching brutality; Satan sucks
At one point in this film, the Jewish high priest Ciaphas challenges the bloodied, crucified Jesus to save himself "so that we may see and believe." In a similar tone, director Mel Gibson has challenged viewers to behold the result of his single-minded interpretation of the orgy of suffering that is visited upon Jesus Christ's mortal self. Acting is strong across the board with an Aramaic/Latin screenplay; no punches are pulled in terms of cinematography. A notable quibble is the hooded, ghoulish oh-so-sinister Satan whose appearances presumably symbolise Jesus's moments of doubt (a similar motif was used by Scorsese in "Last Temptation of Christ" but in a much more coherent manner). The shot of Satan’s frustration at Jesus's triumphal sacrifice is a surprising misstep into cliche territory (anyone remember Al Pacino at the climax of "The Devil's Advocate"?). Nevertheless Gibson attains success mainly in his ability in never evoking pity on Jesus that's tainted by hatred towards his tormentors. Rather, he has instilled in the non-religion-specific viewer a lasting empathy in a being who in the name of love utterly forgives those who shall never pardon him, and begs for mercy on those who show him none.

For Those Who Know What They're About to See--Surprise!
by levkouum ,Mar 14 '04
Pros: Appropriate depiction, very well expressed.
Cons: Graphic, requires background knowledge for thorough understanding.
As a practicing Roman Catholic, and a huge fan of Mel Gibson, I went to se this movie on the first day it came out. First impression: I was very surprised. Since childhood, I had read and memorized text from the Bible, but the way Gibson portrays Jesus Christ in this movie definetely exceeds what is written in the Scripture. Although it pleased me that Gibson proved a point--that Jesus Christ's suffering is not something to be taken for granted--this movie seems to only be enjoyed by those who have a background understanding and at least some belief in Jesus Christ. A person who is either uninformed, or non-Christian will most likely misunderstand this movie, as demonstrated by the outcries of some who see the film as an attack on the Jewish community. That misundertanding can only exist due to their lack of knowledge about the Christian faith. Another possible misunderstanding: Don't assume this movie will teach your children about God. It really won't, and will instead disturb them greatly. I recommend not taking a child under the age of 13 to watch this film.

The Passion of the Christ
by andrewjv ,Mar 02 '04
Pros: Extremely well done, very moving.
Cons: Not for young children.
This film moved me very deeply. It was profoundly well done.
It was very accurate in its depiction of the suffering Our Lord went through.
As a Catholic, I believe that Catholics have always had a better appreciation of the final hours of Our Lord's life because it is part of our traditional prayer observances (e.g. the Stations of the Cross found in all Catholic Churches).
But this really made an impact on me and I cried throughout the movie.

I was greatly impressed by the intimacy between Mary, the Mother of Jesus and Jesus in the film. It gave me a better appreciation of the role that Mary played in Jesus' life.
