Let's get the plot out of the way first. Dracula terrorizes a fear-stricken town and is planning to breed thousands of blood-suckers using Dr. Frankenstein's science. Here comes a hero (with a side kick, of course) that tries to defeat said villain. ...

Pros: Beckinsale, Jackman, visual effects. Cons: Plot holes, below average dialog.
The first thing that I noticed about Van Helsing is that it is nothing like what I had expected. The second thing that I noticed about Van Helsing that it was actually good. Surprisingly NOT scary, surprisingly cheesy writing, but nevertheless, ...

Pros: Doesn't challenge you in any way. Hugh Jackman. Kate Beckinsale is hot.
Cons: Too much CGI. Kate Beckinsales performance. Hugh Jackman was better in X-Men.
'Van Helsing’ tries really, really hard. It has all the right ingredients, as well. It stars Hugh Jackman (a handsome male lead who is hot off of the success of the ‘X-Men’ franchise) and Kate Beckinsale (a hot female lead who is more than competant with ...

Pros: Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale, CGI, most of the key performances. Cons: pacing of many scenes, depiction of "Dracula" and "the Monster" aren't that scary.
"Van Helsing" is a retelling of the famed vampire hunter of the Bram Stoker novel "Dracula". However, it is more an action-adventure than a horror movie. Hugh Jackman plays the title character, who works for the Catholic church in this story, and is ...

Pros: Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale are nice to look at but that's about all. Cons: Poor screen play, flat acting, stupid accents, bad computer generated monsters! Just rent the originals!
Overview I'm not known for long movie reviews unless I REALLY like a film, so let's cut to the chase: Van Helsing is yet one more remake of the classic Frankenstein's monster meets Dracula story. The movie in a few words: Poor ...

Cheesy but fun
by rabidrage ,May 21 '04
Pros: Music, action, special effects Cons: Cheesiness, plot, characters
I expected more out of this movie. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot IN this movie...but little of it had substance. We get great action scenes that are loads of fun to watch, with wonderful special effects and decent acting. But there is nothing new here. I saw nothing special about the legendary Van Helsing, nothing that we haven't seen in billions of protagonists already, especially in the emerging genre of comic book based movies.
This movie features a watered-down version of Dracula, Frankenstein, and Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde (probably the exact same version we saw in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). Likewise, this movie tries too hard and finds itself doing utterly cheesy things, with utterly terrible one-liners. It's fun, though. I will give it that. And the soundtrack is very cool, it keeps the action alive throughout. You might do a lot of groaning during this film, but I guarantee that you will not be bored.

If you loved Extrodonary Gentlemen you will love Van Helsing.
by kocol ,May 21 '04
Pros: Action packed from begening to end. Cons: There really was no plcae at the end of the movie for a sequal!
Folks Van Helsing was made as all horror movies should have been, exciting! This was action packed and well done. The great thing about movies like these are there is no reason to spend a great lengthy time introducing charictars and spend more time for action! There was no slow part this was a seat rivitting to the very end! Plus you have to love where Frankenstien actually is the hero as well! The computer graphics are amazing! Wait 'till you see the warewolf. There really was no disapointment to this movie, and I was waiting for it! This was the movie of the summer! By the way for you singles this is a great date movie, my wife cringed into my arms several times during the show! Bottom line you have to see this movie and make sure you see it on the big screen! Van Helsing is the cross of Indiana Jones, Wild wild West, and all the classic horror movies.

Just another vampire movie
by itsnotme1996 ,Nov 29 '04
Pros: Hugh Jackman is good eye candy Cons: Dragged on too long
I could hardly wait until this movie came out on video. I love scary movies, especially vampire movies. This one however, did not live up to to the hype surrounding it. I think Hugh Jackman did a good job acting, as best you can in this type of movie. The graphics were great, and the special effects of the different changes between man and creature were fairly believable. The only problem I really had with this movie is that you never were really informed as to why all of these events were taking place. There was a brief history lesson in the beginning, and you basically had to try to catch any hints that were given along the way. I think it may have been a little too lengthly for my taste. A good vampire movie eventually runs out of story after a while. But, for good entertainment, and some hot Hugh Jackman, it is worth it.

Van Helsing to the Rescue!!
by lisa1977 ,Jan 19 '05
Pros: Adventure, excitement, thrilling Cons: The ending was good but a bit disappointing.
Van Helsing is a wonderful movie about a man who does not know who he is but he knows he is supposed to protect the world from vampires and Dr Jeckyll. Just read and you'll see for yourself.
This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. It starts out with him chasing this huge giant, who we came to find out is Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. It goes from there leading into this amazing storyline of how he doesn't remember where he is from and doesn't know who he is but finds out that somehow he is connected with Count Dracula! It is a very exciting movie and I really hope that you all enjoy it as much as I have!!

Movie was disappointing
by mafiaboi ,Oct 25 '04
Pros: Good effects Cons: Acting wasn't great, story line not so great
I just watched Van Helsing over the weekend and I was pretty disappointed with the movie. After seeing several trailors, I really wanted to see this in theatres. But the movie was filled with a not so great story line, acting wasn't too great either and there was a lot of "cheesy" lines. The movie seemed to drag on at times and throughout the movie I began to lose interest. I ain't going to go into detail through the movie, just don't want to spoil anything. Overall the movie was okay, but just don't expect too high from watching this.

Not worth the full price of admission
by sw733 ,May 13 '04
Pros: The special effects were good and some decent actions throughout the movie. Cons: The acting was bad. The story line was simple.
Just saw the movie the other day. I was very dissappointed in the movie as a whole. The trailer made it to appear as it's the movie to see. The special effects were good and that was pretty much the only good thing out of the movie. The acting was substandard and the story line was simple. Van Helsing was raised by a "secret" society of monks (well, not so secret the way things were done in the movie) to hunt monsters. He was ordered to save Kate Beckinsale from the vampires ("woo, the hero comes in to save the pretty girl and mankind!"). The director tried to play this sexual chemistry between the hero (played by Hugh Jackman) and the pretty girl (Kate Beckinsale) and yet it was average at best. The hero and the pretty girl met the very first time and BOOM they are in love... where is that coming from and what happened to the middle part??? Not worth the full price of admission. Maybe a video/DVD movie night with friends and family.

Simple Plots Tend To Be The Best...
by wjr123 ,Jun 09 '04
Pros: Great production quality, costumes and settings were good, effects were great Cons: Minimal character development, confusing overcomplicated plot, stereotypical monsters
This movie unfortunately fell victim to trying to include so many different monsters and legends that a complex and elaborate plot (that didn't make itself completely clear at times) was developed instead of a simple one that could have worked much better. While Van Helsing is not without some great scenes, like the first 5-10 minutes that are in black and white, most all of it has been done before in all the other monster movies throughout history. The main problem is that this movie borrows too frequently from currently established lore, while failing to be creative with developing new facets of the creatures portrayed. The most likely reason the monster lore was not expounded upon was simply because too much was included in the movie. No time was left to allow for unique characterization and was then forced to rely on the standard stereotypes. Also, Hugh Jackman never really shined, his performance came off dry and no memorable dialogue was developed. Overall, this movie had some great effects but fell short of its epic scope.

Aaarrrrrrrrrrroooooooooooooooo!
by myystic ,May 28 '04
Pros: Great special effects, Hugh Jackman in a loincloth type thing. Cons: A little too over the top, campy.
My husband and I are huge horror fans and when Van Helsing came out in the theaters, we had to go see it. I have a great love for classic horror (Dracula, The Wolf Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde).
I've got about as much good to say about this film as I do bad. While the acting wasn't spectacular, it wasn't awful. The special effects were quite good, but the campyness of the "brides" was a little much. Overall, it was a movie I would have paid to rent, but I'm wishing I hadn't gone to the theater for it.

Full of energy
by powderhound02 ,May 09 '04
Pros: Special effects
Fast pace in many scenes
great music Cons: A little too much rope swinging
I saw this movie on the 7th of May and was pretty impressed. If you want a movie that will entertain and dazzle, this is a movie to see. Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale are a good match, and the effects of this movie are spectacular. I found myself thinking "wow" a bunch of times from the jaw- dropping cinematography. It's like Indiana Jones in Transylvania, and Jackman plays it well, with the beautiful Beckinsale showing that she is an actress with talent.
The only couple of cons I had in the movie is a little more character development was needed, and there is a lot of rope swinging.
Overall, if you are going to see this movie, then go in to the theater with the expectation to be entertained and amazed by the effects, but if you need to see a movie that has a very deep plot, there's slim pickins at the theater right now.
I'd recommend seeing this one.
