Pros: Great atmosphere--genuinely creepy. Cons: It's very vague even in the resolution.
When young social worker Rika (Megumi Okini) is sent to the home of an elderly woman, nothing could have prepared her for what she finds inside the house. While the fact that the home is in complete disarray and the old woman's nearly catatonic is ...
Pros: A decent scare every ten minutes Cons: Where did the story go?
There's an undeniable symmetry with the trend of horror movies coming out of Hollywood, and those being imported from the Far East. And it's not necessarily a good one. It's not hard to understand why American filmmakers get their kicks (and a great big ...
Pros: some scary moments, entertaining, good scenes Cons: acting, some editing, inconsistencies
I recently saw Ju-On, the Japanese horror movie from the makers of Ringu (the movie that The Ring was based on) that is remade into The Grudge, which is coming out shortly. Get all of that? Basically: Ju-On=The ...
Pros: Excellent scary moments, creepy, good non linear plot Cons: If you like your stories linear this one might confuse you.
Back in 2004 the American public was once again exposed to a remake of a Japanese ghost story by the name of The Grudge. This version starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and was a decent little flick which was mildly scary and perfectly appropriate ...
Pros: None Cons: Makes no sense, not scary, bad special effects
I am usually a fan of Japanese horror. Its strange, its atmospheric, it doesn't make an awfull lot of sense, and its a break from the same old formulaic, hollywood-horror crap. I was expecting a lot from "The Grudge", as the plot seemed like the basis ...
Pros: Storytelling, acting, cinematography, plot, and scare factors Cons: Can be easy to get lost in the constant switching of time frames.
Ju-On: The Grudge is well worth the rental fee at Blockbuster. Whether you see Sam Raimi's remake first or not, this is an excellent movie. Much like Ringu, less enthusiastic horror fans may be bored easily with this movie, since the plot is ...
Pros: --Darker, more eerie then American remake.
--More enriched, and detailed on the curse. Cons: --Lack of explanation for the flashbacks.
--Not so good makeup effects.
"Ju-on" DVD review [ 83% ] With the onslaught of Japanese horror remakes in America, with the "Ring" and "The Grudge", it only makes sense that their origins become known. "Ju-On" is the scarier, more in-depth original of "The Grudge", and ...
Pros: Creepy story, low-tech scares still scare Cons: Episodic format feels disjointed, some "dumb" moves
Coming this October is the latest Hollywood adaptation of an Asian horror flick. ‘Ju-On: The Grudge’ is being advertised and touted as the next ‘Ringu’ – the startling Japanese horror movie that was remade as ‘The Ring.’ What the movie ends up being is a ...
Pros: Interesting filming technique, horror without gore. Cons: Thin plot, lack of explanation at times.
I saw this Japanese movie a year ago, so the details are not so fresh in my mind right now. Then again I don't want to spoil you with the details; this review covers the basic synopsis and some minor details. Ju-on is literally translated as revenge ...
Ju-on original is a lot better than the Hollywood version. by locasawa ,Mar 26 '07
Pros: lots of creepy moments, kept the audience interested from beginning to end Cons: the translation were a bit off, more audio option would be nice
It's not the usual "slicing and blood gushing" type of Hollywood scary film. It was creepy and gorey. Spoilers ahead - the ghost underneath the quilt totally got me jumping! I knew there was something there but the way the camera captured it totally gave me a heart attack. I wasn't able to sleep without a night light for the first two days that I finished watching it.
Who doesn't like Sarah Michelle Gellar? by babygir6l9 ,Feb 10 '05
Pros: well put together story, edge of your seat Cons: it's in chinese
Not all subtitled movies are boring. Ju-On: The Grudge not only has the power to produce nightmares, but it's storyline is even easier than it's english speaking brother "The Grudge" featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar.
An all chinese movie, a young girl is sent to help an old woman and her family (chores, etc).Only when she shows up, she finds pictures with the faces cut out, trash everywhere, and an old woman all alone lying in her own feces.Upon finding a strange naked boy taped in a closet. Throughout the movie things only get better, you eventually learn the whole story,of a obsessed woman and her husband, and the children that died because of jealousy. And there's plenty of interesting deaths.
So even if you aren't really into foriegn language films...this one just might be worth your hour and a half.
Really good movie for horror fans by vader_ek2 ,Feb 17 '06
Pros: intriguing and full of immersive creepy atmosphere
Cons: sometimes you can say it's "another" japanese movie.
The Grudge, one of the most scary films I had seen in a long time!
There is no main character in this movie. The link between all the players is a house, the haunted house, and it "touches" every person that sets foot in it...
This is a very spooky movie, with lots of strange camera angles and odd, jarring sound effects
This is one seriously creepy film and freaked me out more than any other horror has done in years. If you like your horror movies to be creepy and scary then Ju-on: The Grudge should be on your list. If you like your soundtracks to make your neck hairs stand to attention, then Ju-on: The Grudge should be on your list.
THIS FILM WILL SCARE THE SOCK OFF OF THE MOST AVID HORROR FAN.
