Pros: Nothing worthy of mention Cons: This has been done before
About the only reason to watch Layer Cake is to see the guy who will play the next James Bond. This British film will remind viewers of Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch, both of which borrow heavily from ...
I'm thrilled to spend my 500th review on Layer Cake which proved, before Casino Royale, how cool it would be to imagine Daniel Craig as an action figure. To my surprise, the film made only $2 million domestically and $11 million worldwide. How, I ...
Pros: Daniel Craig; acting; story; good old fashioned dark fun Cons: Ummm... that I didn't catch how the main character didn't have a name?
After watching Casino Royale and both agreeing that Daniel Craig was the best James Bond of our generation, we put the movie he was best known for, pre 007, on our Netflix queue. This past weekend we were able to sit back and enjoy Layer ...
Pros: Superb acting, tightly twisted plot, lots of profanity and violence. Cons: Lots of profanity and violence.
Layer Cake (2004) Directed by Matthew VaughnYou're born, you take sh*t. You get out in the world, you take more sh*t. You climb a little higher, you take less sh*t. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten ...
Pros: Excellent cast and crew that makes it a very real movie Cons: A little dark in places that a few people might find disturbing
Having made a name for himself as Guy Ritchies mate and producer of Lock Stock and Snatch, Matthew Vaughn has finally set out on his own. His directorial debut came in the form of last years Layer Cake. The film itself boasted a whole host of ...
Pros: Great cast of characters, fantastic direction, and a tight script. Cons: A bit hard to follow at times.
In the not too distant future, somewhere in time and space, they will actually announce, officially, who will star as James Bond in the upcoming "Casino Royale." One day they're telling us that it is in Julian McMahon's corner, then it might be another ...
Layer Cake Directed by Matthew Vaughn Written by J.J. Connolly Starring Daniel Craig, George Harris, Colm Meaney, and Michael Gambon 5/10 By whatever fluke of scheduling, I find myself watching Pulp Fiction on late-night IFC ...
Pros: Great acting, and dazzling visuals Cons: None
The feeling of being trapped when wanting to escape from a dangerous world is what the film Layer Cake explores, which is brought to life thanks to the penetrating acting talent of Daniel Craig. Layer Cake paints the picture of a good-willed cocaine ...
Let me start by saying that I had no idea this movie was even in the theatres, nor had I ever heard of it. After reading the reviews here, I decide to see it.... 'Layer Cake' opens as XXXX (star of the movie, name unknown)narrates that he is leaving ...
Pros: Riveting and stylish Cons: Sometimes difficult to keep track of events
*** This review contains minor spoilers *** Director: Matthew Vaughan (novel and screenplay by J J Connolly) Main players Daniel Craig .... XXXX Jamie Foreman .... Duke George Harris .... Morty Colm Meaney .... Gene Kenneth Cranham .... Jimmy ...
Pros: Excellent script, decent performances, plenty of clever twists Cons: Just poorly put together and slightly too many holes for my taste
The words "from the producer of..." don't do anything for me, usually. But for some reason--maybe because I really, really liked Lock, Stock (1998) and Snatch (2000)--I gave in and broke a personal rule of mine never to trust anything that's written on a ...
Pros: Great acting, good plot, good music. Cons: Maybe too many layers.
Layer Cake is a complicated movie with, oddly enough, many layers. You really need a scorecard with this type of movie. There's the gang lead by Daniel Craig (unnamed in the movie, and credited as a string of X's), which tends to use the services of a ...
Pros: Interesting twists and turns Cons: Not for the 'F' word challenged
If you're sensitive to the 'F' word then you'd better avoid this film. The dialogue is liberally peppered with it. If you're hardened to that sort of language then you might find the twists and turns of this movie captivating enough to keep you planted ...
Layer Cake, some good old boys. by bshays ,Sep 23 '06
Pros: Good acting and filming without being overdone. Cons: The Duke's girlfriend.
This is a movie of timing and style. The kind of movie 60 year old East End boys would appreciate. With a mixed cast of well known but mostly not well known actors, this fresh and visual movie does the job without overdone action, special effects or Cockney slang. Far better than Lock Stock, the editing of film and music is very well done. It isn't ridiculously done up to have a crazy choreographed ending and has the genuine non-Hollywood feel of something like The Football Factory. Maybe it's just the fact that the Duke is in both. The Duke and his gang are a little overdone but it is necessary to show the art of dealing drugs when looking to the main character.
The cinematography stood out with a nice shot from a helicopter to show a car arriving to a mansion. A few tricky cuts hear and there give it an edgy feel with some of the shots of warehouses and such being a real treat for the eye.
