Pros: McGregor and Johansson, great action, fast paced Cons: Underutilized supporting cast, too many 'Run Lola Run' reminders
So I went to a deserted island last week. Actually I went to see The Island, and it was deserted (thank Jay Leno for that joke). Seriously though, this has been one of the worst received blockbusters of the year, and did not premiere in theaters with a ...
Pros: Great idea, great cast, some parts very enjoyable... Cons: ... overlong, doesn't fulfill its potential, flawed theories
Sorry if this review is a little confused, but that was how I found the film lots of things to like about it, but lots of things that let it down as well. Many things Ive touched on in this review may seem a little ambiguous, but thats ...
Pros: Nice action with an excellent cast and director. Cons: Introduction and set up is a little long.
When good Hollywood directors are on short supply, intransigent cineastes tend to anxiously cling to the auteurs in their midst. Like John Carpenter or Peter Jackson, Michael Bay is one of a diminishing number of true visionaries who even in their flops ...
Pros: Great story Cons: The trailers didn't do their job
It should be noted that The Island is blockbuster director Michael Bay’s first bomb. After a string of successful action movies such as Armageddon and The Rock, it was inevitable that something of his bit the dust. What’s sad is that ...
Pros: convincing depiction of the future, intense action scenes, McGregor and Johansson do a convincing job Cons: not quite intelligent enough, too cliche, lacks depth.
The Island is an interesting movie in that the premise of it is so plausible that it is almost frightening. The movie is based on this idea that clones of humans can be made for the purpose of being a backup for their originals, that is if the ...
I only saw The Island's trailer once, but once was all it took for it to stick in my head. After a while, all I remembered was the image of Michael Clarke Duncan running terrified down a solid white hall. But that image alone is fascinating, and ...
Pros: dazzling, action-packed fun, with timely issues and great performances Cons: clones other movies shamelessly
The Island is a lot of fun to watch, even if this tale of human cloning for parasitic purposes is, in fact, a tale of directorial cloning for parasitic purposes. Summer is supposed to be popcorn season, and there's been precious little of that. Sure, ...
Pros: Explosions, Steve Buscemi Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE
Lets see. 1 cup THX 1138 1 cup The Matrix semi-clarified (skim it but do not remove all confusion) ½ cup The Running Man 2 cups Gattaca Dash of Metropolis Hint of Soilent Green Fellinis ...
Pros: Entertaining, thought-provoking concepts, attractive visuals Cons: Too many action scenes back-to-back in second half
The Island stars Ewan McGregor (Lincoln Six Echo) and Scarlett Johansson (Jordan Two Delta) as inhabitants of a futuristic indoor world after the “contamination” of the outer world. Life is filled with rigorous rules regarding eating, sex, and ...
Pros: Good script, action and acting. Cons: Perhaps a little too much violence.
I have a growing fascination, bordering on infatuation, with Scarlett Johansson. And no its not the blonde hair. She has this look of innocence that draws one in, a sweetness that make you want to watch and see if shell ever shed her little ...
Pros: The One-Liners Steve Buscemi is Given. Cons: Incompetent Directing, Messy Script, Bland Production, Editing, & Cast.
When there's a debate about directors, the best is always put on the tables. Names like Kurosawa, Lean, Fellini, Antonioni, Coppola, Ford, Leone, Kubrick, Truffaut, Godard, Bergman, and more recently, Spielberg, Wenders, Jarmusch, and von Trier. ...
As I explained in my previous column, I have been somewhat incommunicado recently due to what one can only call an enforced stay at an exclusive, if rather dreary tropical resort called Gizmo or Gitmo or some such name. I have been unable to locate it ...
Pros: entertaining, filled with action, acting Cons: totally derived from other works, runs out of story, uses over-the-top action
Warning This review is filled with spoilers, but you'll want to watch the movie for the action, anyway. The story falls apart about halfway through. Review Take the 1978 movie ...
Pros: Good action. Fun and entertaining. Cons: No surprises really. Predictable and unoriginal.
It's very hard to make an original movie when you are borrowing from so many others that came before. Even your own films. Michael Bay almost gets there, but not quite. I found the film, The Island, to be fun and exciting and interesting enough. I ...
Pros: McGregor. Cast. Use of CGI. Attempted ideas. Cons: Underdeveloped Johansson character. Naive and physics defying at times.
It is quite evident on Epinions that any component of a Michael Bay fan club is non-existent. I for one have despised much of the directors previous work. I severely have disliked nearly everything he has created and I am sure I will be abhorred by ...
Pros: Amused me and entertained me. Ewen McGregor and Scarlett Johansson make a case for cloning. Cons: The ending sucked - messes up Mr. Laurent's potential as a memorable villain completely.
The Island is not as bad as Bay's reputation for making meritless excuses for blowing things up. Bay's previous best effort was the mindlessly entertaining The Rock, which survived on the sole strength of its action and one-liners. On top ...
Pros: Good, solid performances and a clever storyline Cons: Somewhat predictable, and a tad too long
It's unfortunate this film did so poorly at the box office. I suspect the fact that Michael Bay directed it left many feeling that they'd had enough of his action-packed, but generally pointless films (try Armageddon on for size) and just ignored ...
Pros: Good, clean, silly fun. Very agreeable performance by Ewan McGregor. Cons: Typical Michael Bay emptiness
While this is certainly no masterpiece, THE ISLAND did provide two hours of entertaining, preposterous noise...it was fun. If someone was hoping for or expecting more from it, I guess you've never seen the previews or any other movies by Michael ...
Pros: special effects, story, acting Cons: Michael Bay-style ending
Note: To the readers who've seen the trailers to "The Island," this review contains no spoilers. To the five people in the country who haven't seen the promos or are aware of the plot revelations, some crucial plot information is revealed. We meet ...
Pros: Ewan McGregor (mostly), Sean Bean, good action scenes, ethical debate, nice sets, genocide reference Cons: contrived-big time, missed opporitunities, unrealistic, Michael Bay directed it (shudder), they screwed up the "twist".
Ok, so this time Obi-Wan is a clone. Ironic. My buddy paid for this, so I didn't feel too ripped off. It's always fun to see movies, however, unless they are really, really bad. I just enjoy the cinematic experience. Going into The Island, I ...
Pros: Good sci-fi premise, major cast all decent actors Cons: Laughably unrealistic action, may cast a simplistic light on certain current political/science issues
First I will say, in this film's favor, that I started watching it a few minutes into the beginning. I was on the flight back from hosting the Dallas Epinions member Meet & Greet and my iPod had just run out of juice. So I missed a couple of minutes in ...
Pros: good performances (because of good actors), a few interesting and original moments Cons: Mostly uninspired and unoriginal, too many lengthy chase/explosion sequences, Michael Bay's name
New adj. 1. Having been made or come into being only a short time ago Funny. Michael Bay (the wonderful creator of Pearl Harbor, Armageddon, and the wonderful Bad Boys series) has a "new" film out this ...
Pros: Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson Cons: Worn out chase plot, anti-science message
Why is it that ever so often society produces a beware of the evils of science movie? Its either a entrepreneur exploiting a scientist who is trying to further science for the betterment of man and doesn't know he is hurting anyone or a ...
Pros: McGregor and Johansson are likable, and Buscemi is his usual entertaining self. Cons: It's a Michael Bay movie. Is it really required to elaborate?
First, he gave us an in-depth account of how one annoying buddy cop can take star cred from the other, less annoying buddy cop in Bad Boys. Then he turned Alcatraz into a deeply philosophical video game arcade for Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery in ...
Pros: Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Sean Bean, the script, the musical score, nearly everything Cons: limited Michael Clarke Duncan role, a little too long
What draws audiences today to science-fiction thrillers set within the not too distant future? Can it be the mystery, the intrigue, or the fear of the change that could potential swipe mankind into an alter environment we are unfamiliar with? ...
Pros: Interesting and serious look at the future, generally good performances, cool effects. Cons: Last half is just another action flick and lacks the originality of the first half.
Im normally not too interested in the big-budget, effects-laden mindless action flicks of the summer (including most of the recent slew of superhero movies). If I see this type of film at all, its usually when they come out on DVD. I just ...
Pros: The cast, the story, art direction, special effects, great action sequences Cons: Scarlett Johansson
"The Island" was a big budget blockbuster that hit theatres in the summer of 2005. Accompanied by an equally big marketing campaign, the film met with lackluster reviews by both critics and moviegoers alike and as a result "The Island" was ultimately a ...
Pros: Concept, Ewan Mcgregor Cons: The plot does not do justice to the possibilities of the concept!!
Introduction Cloning is one of most controversial ongoing scientific researches. So it makes for juicy ingredient for Hollywood to look into the moral issues of cloning. I just loved the movie Sixth Day staring Arnie on this ...
Pros: -Intense Action
-Good Story
-It's a Michael Bay film... Cons: Some actions are so intense it's silly.
A film that has been underrated by many, I actually found the movie enjoyable. Horrible marketing ruined the film’s potential to be a major blockbuster. It was probably the reason why many avoided the movie, bad timing + bad trailers = loss ticket sales. ...
Pros: Good Leads and Premise. Cons: Action sequences are not needed.
In a clean, white, and antiseptic society, a man has begun to question his existence and the very nature of his world. The man is Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan Mc Gregor), who lives day to day with the notion that he is one of the few survivors of a world wide ...
Pros: Clones act human, futuristic, exciting, suspenseful Cons: Leaves questions unanswered, main characters' personalities change drastically once outside
Wow. Just wow. I went into this movie hoping it would be a thriller but had never heard of The Island before so really had no preconceived notions. I do love futuristic movies and this one was set in the future. I was shocked when I learned there ...
Pros: The cast got skillz (and they're pretty, too); Bay knows adrenaline; an actual STORY! Cons: SHakY CaMErA TriCKs (bArf), weak ending
The Island Relatively Spoiler Free This flick is not some incarnation of Survivor, so get that out of your head now. This movie would be getting better reviews from professional reviewers, and would be gettng better word of mouth, ...
Pros: Attractive talented leads, interesting story Cons: Second half becomes a shooting spree, despite the intelligent first half
It's not often that a Michael Bay movie flops at the box office - in fact, it's never. But The Island started out at a #4 spot and only went downhill from there. With a 122 million-dollar budget, the already sinking Dreamworks Company has probably spent ...
Pros: Good actors, lots of action, it's a fun movie. Cons: Totally predictable, especially if you've seen the commercials.
Why should I reveal any major plot points about this movie at Epinions.com when the commercials already tell the whole story? Okay, so I wasn't even going bother seeing this movie in the theaters because the commercials already showed the whole ...
Pros: Good action, good actors, a fun time. Cons: Editing could use some work. Scenes drag in parts.
If you've seen Logan's Run starring Michael York, you've pretty much figured out the entire movie. If not, let me explain. Logan's Run takes place in 2274, where survivors of a holocaust now live inside a domed city. Nobody lives beyond the age of 30 and ...
Pros: A great film to watch Cons: Could this be our future?
I bought this DVD in Germany for 21.99 euros (I'm not sure how much this is in dollars but I think it is quite cheap) which is quite good value for me. I only bought this because Ewan McGregor is in the starring role and I absolutely love his films. ...
Have you ever wished you had a clone and can get body parts harvested when you need them? Well that is basically what the island is about Lincoln Six-Echo (McGregor - Star Wars 1,2 and 3) is having dreams of a boat leaving for a island with Jordan ...
Pros: Cinematography, Chemistry, Depth of Message, Action Scene on Semi. Cons: Product Placement, Too Little Scarlett, and Unbelievable Scene.
The reviewers who are bashing this movie are blind. Yes, blind. They write things like, "It's a Michael Bay movie, need I say more?" It appears to me that they had this movie boxed straight to DVD before they entered the theater. I saw this movie ...
Pros: Great effects, interesting premise/plot Cons: Very Long, some parts are slow
Running a lengthy 2 hrs and 7 minutes, The Island was a very intriguing sci-fi thriller starring several A-list actors such as Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Djimon Hounsou (the lead in Amistad), and Michael Clarke Duncan. In brief, the movie ...
Pros: Highly paced action scenes. Cons: Story is similar to the 1979 film "The Colonus horror"
Introduction: The movie "island" is a Michael bay directed film is similar to the 1979 film "The Clonus Horror". The Evan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson starer film is a story of clones who are ignorant of their existence living in an isolated ...
Pros: Funny moments, easy to grasp general concept Cons: Unrealistic at some parts, action sequences confusing
I saw the previews for the movie several times, and thought "Eh, looks good, maybe I'll rent it when it comes out on DVD." That sort of thing. However, a few days before it came out, my friend invited me to go see it with her. I agreed, and a few days ...
Pros: Great character development, great cinemaphotography, great special effects, Cons: Would people really raise humans just to harves thier organs?
Again, let me just add my voice to the rest. I thought this was a really good movie. I read a book that this movie was based on, and believe it or not the movie was even better. The movie has good character development(a bigger necesity than special effects in my opinion)
The Special Effects:
Great, the scenes are very believable, nothing looks fake. Seamless.
The Action:
Right on the money. Plenty of believable action scenes.
An unoriginal compilation of "Logan's Run" meets "The Fast & the Furious Furious". by theronman2001 ,May 11 '08
Pros: SPOILER: It was suspenseful until we learned they were being cloned for spare parts. Cons: The car crashes were obviously miniaturized.
An unoriginal compilation of "Logan's Run" meets "The Fast & the Furious Furious". How disappointing & predictable. The entire premise was cloned from a story about clones. Instead of Logan 5, the hero's name is Lincoln Six Echo. In "Logan's Run", Jenny Agutter played Jessica 6. Scarlett Johannson's character is Jordan Two Delta. Oh yeah, Richard "Jordan" was the antagonist in Logan's Run. Coincidence or plagiarism? Logan & Jessica were destined for "renewal". After "decontamination", Lincoln 6E & Jordan 2D were promised life on "The Island". In the predictable finale, the destruction of the underground complex & subsequent exodus scenes were almost identical to "Logan's Run". Frankly, I do not recall so many car crashes in a Sci-fi thriller.
Pros: Attractive actors in wild chase scenes. Cons: Less than beiievable plot. Stylistically confused.
"The Island" could surely have been a terrific movie. A cool idea and a decent budget was a real opportunity. It seems that so little care went into the writing. Is it enough to have lots of chase scenes and explosions? Maybe it is. It could have been so much more entertaining if they hadn't stretched willing suspension of disbelief beyond all limits. The writing and visual styles were inconsistent but not in a good way. Is it a thriller or a farce? "Brazil" mixed styles, too but somehow that film worked quite a bit better than this one. The cast is strong but even they can't quite make this one work. One doesn't expect much from summer releases and this meets all expectations. Does one really want to pay to watch a film that seems only to have been made for someone's hefty payday?
Pros: you'll love it Cons: well, i wish there wasn't as much sex in it
I'd highly recommend watching the island. It will be one that i buy when it comes out on dvd. I'm very selective in what i buy but this will definitely be one of them.
Good screenplay, good acting, good effects, good plot, good message. The more i think about the movie the more i like it, i'm planning on seeing it again before it leaves theaters, and buying it when it comes out.
to be honest i went out and got some water when things were getting 'romantic' so i don't know how bad that got, but i heard it was funny? i don't know how that could be, but then again i did miss that part.
