  • Neil Gaiman's MirrorMask was a disappointment

Pros: I can't think of any
Cons: The visuals were not appealing

Summary: I am a huge fan of author Neil Gaiman’s work, and I had high hopes going into seeing MirrorMask since he wrote it. After watching this film, I now understand why such a popular author’s movie never got much publicity. Keep reading and I’ll ... read more

    Jul 23, 2008
    Pros: incredibly artistic
    Cons: trippy and bleak

Summary: I'm a loyal fan of Jim Henson, so anything in which he or his children were involved tends to intrigue me. Recently, I was pointed in the direction of MirrorMask, a fantasy of which one of the producers was Lisa Henson. The film, directed by ... read more

  • MirrorMask - From the Sandman Dream-Team

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jul 3, 2008
Pros: Unlike anything I've seen before. Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean working together-Heaven!!!
Cons: Visually bombarding, some serious lulls in the story that make you a bit bored.

Summary: Anyone who ever remembers the "Sandman" comic books from the 90's by Neil Gaiman will appreciate this film. The covers were done by artist and enthusiastic compositor, Dave McKean. NOTE: I've had trouble reviewing Neil Gaiman's work in the past and ... read more

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jun 29, 2008
Pros: Bold, innovative, totally original, yet a timeless storyline.
Cons: Crosses over into the weird frequently. Pay attention, or surrender to confusion.

Summary: MirrorMask (2005) Directed by Dave McKean, Written by Neil Gaiman. Helena is a 15 year old girl who lives in a circus. Therefore, she is totally miserable and wants to run away and join real life, the exact opposite of all the children who ... read more

    Pros: Visually amazing.
Cons: Dramatically, never really gets started.

Summary: I had actually owned this movie for awhile, but had not gotten around to watching it until we went to see STARDUST...based on another Neil Gaiman story. We enjoyed that very much, so I dug out the DVD and my wife and 14 year old daughter and I plunked ... read more

  • Mirrormask... Very weird, but very good...

    Pros: Unique...
Cons: ... in a way that some won't like...

Summary: Mirrormask is a strange and somewhat unique film which I was surprised to find was only released in 2006. It’s certainly one of the most surreal films I’ve ever seen, and I think this shrillness makes it somewhat a love it or hate it ... read more

  • You're Going to be the Death of Me! MirrorMask

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jan 4, 2008
Pros: outstanding visuals and very intriguing plot
    Cons: may scare younger kids

Summary: You know how so many kids just want to run away and join a circus? Not Helena (Stephanie Leonidas), all she wants is to get out of the circus and live a normal life like all the kids that watch her perform. Helena’s relationship with her mother is ... read more

Pros: Acting, visuals, story, music - I loved it all
Cons: Good heavens - what if it was the chicken?!

Summary: Just short of a year ago, I read a review about a movie called Mirrormask. Just like when I’d read a review of a book called Coraline by Neil Gaiman, after realizing the creators were the same and considering how much I loved ... read more

  • A happy movie

Pros: great fantasy creatures, good plot, enjoyable characters, fun to watch
Cons: for only older children or adults

Summary: I'm not familiar with other works by Neil Gaiman, but I know I really enjoyed the movie. I like the genre of fantasy-especially the ones that have sophisticated enough themes to be entertaining to the grown up in me, but leave out the racy content. I ... read more

    Pros: mind-blowing visual style
    Cons: lackluster story

Summary: There are certain kinds of stories that are apparently imprinted on our collective conscious, stories that keep surfacing again and again with only minor variations. You can see it if you study the myths and legends of ancient cultures where the same ... read more

  • Dazzling hallucinatory journey

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Oct 21, 2005
Pros: Amazingly layered visual images. Seemless intregration of live action with CGI created environments.
Cons: Story feels overly familiar and not up to the imagination of the visuals.

Summary: Deals with a teenage girl's desire to run away from home (though in this case her home is a circus). She enters the world of her own drawings through a series of dreams, much of them influenced by her mother's impending medical operation. In fact most ... read more
