  • A marvelous adaptation of Dickens' Bleak House, done with chilling precision

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Apr 24, 2007
Pros: Terrific ensemble cast, cinematography, and settings.
Cons: It's not named Bleak House for nothing.

Summary: The time is the 1840's in Victorian England. The film opens with a court case being heard in what was then known as Chancery. A row of justices are hearing the case of Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce, where an inheritance from several generations ago has the ... read more

  • Rock solid adaptation of a Dicken's classic

    May 30, 2008
Pros: Outstanding performances, and a REALLY super screen adaptation.
Cons: As with any BBC mini-series, occasionally creaks under its low budget.

Summary: Lengthy adaptations of Charles Dickens novels are often entertaining, but they can be very "talky." Certainly, there is a lot to say and explain and show in a Dickens epic...his books were huge and his plots were thick. However, this adaptation of ... read more

    Jan 7, 2008
Pros: Excellent characters, wonderful costumes, good plot
Cons: Slightly tedious at times, but well worth it in the end

Summary: Although this dvd mini series came highly recommended to me, my hopes for it were not very high. I am a lover of Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell, so I wasn't sure that Dicken's dark content would appeal. I was blissfully proven wrong! Though at ... read more

Pros: gillan anderson phil davis johnny vegas
Cons: 2 many main characters a little hard to keep everything straight LONGGGG

Summary: Act 1 1850 something, and many people are pinning their hopes on Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce a court case that has been going on for decades: everybody thinks there is a ton of money tied up in it but there isnt because the lawyer's fees have eaten it all ... read more

  • Brilliant Performances Illuminate the BBC's New Version of Bleak House, by Charles Dickens

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Oct 18, 2006
Pros: Cast and performances; authentic costumes, makeup, sets; introductory music; brisk pacing.
Cons: Anderson too frosty; transitional rapid cuts, swooshing and booming sounds; heavy on thunderous music.

Summary: The latest serialised adaptation of ‘Bleak House’ (2005) impressed me enough to bolster my waning faith in that fine institution called the BBC, at least as far as their costume dramas go. Too many of their shows that I’ve seen of late ... read more
