by smallmouth smallmouth is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Sports & Outdoors, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Dec 13 '00
Pros: Kids Love them.
Cons: They are'nt considered an eating fish.
Bluegills have to be one of the most common fish across America. It is hard to find a lake that doesn’t have them. They are very important to watersheds because they provide predator fish with the meals that they so often need.

They do hurt...

tasty little scrappers

by Pabear , Dec 01 '00
Pros: Very good to eat
Cons: The small ones are highly accomplished bait thieves
The bluegill is a feisty little fish who just happens to be excellent table fare too. I like to use my ultra-light spinning outfit, equipped with four pound test monofilament line on the reel. They are one of the more common species of fish in the...

Can't be bought in stores

by goodcents , Sep 20 '00
Pros: No expensive boat or stinky bait required
Cons: wish they grew to 10lbs
When spring comes and the shallow water along local lakes and ponds begin to warm it’s time to buy a box of redworms and think Bluegill. These fish spawn in the spring and move into shallow bays, often in just a couple of feet of water. In gravel or...

The best sport and the best eating
by ke8yy ,Jun 21 '04
Pros: Fun to catch, and good eating, too.
Cons: They'll spoil you.
Someone once said that if bluegills regularly grew to 4-5 pounds, no one would ever look at a a trout again, and I have to agree. Not only are they some of the sweetest, best tasting fish you'll ever eat, they are, in the words of a friend, "gram for gram, the fightingest fist there is".

My favorite way to catch 'gills is with a tiny popper or soft hackle fly when they're over the beds. Cast, let it sit a moment and give the line a tug. Two out of three times you'll be rewarded by an explosion as the 'gill hits the fly.

Spinning fans can also use tiny poppers with a spinning bubble, and the very smallest Mepps spinners and flatfish work well, too. When they're off the beds I like to use a #16 scud or any small nymph- cast it and do a slow retrieve in bluegill waters and you'll be guaranteed more strikes than you can count.
