Had you lost hope finding a beach haven where you can walk for miles and only see plovers and other shorebirds? Hatteras Island is still in many ways a wild, pristine area of unending beauty for those willing to seek it. I've spent more than 25 Summers here and when I'm working during the year the thoughts of this magical place keep body and soul together. The trick is to camp out in one of the great rugged National campgrounds (cold showers, no soap-who needs otherwise?)and walk for miles on the beaches that you simply can't begin to find anywhere else. This place is not about comfort- it's untamed and unspoiled in many ways, no matter what we humans try to do to it. The best areas are between Buxton either direction, from Cape Point North or South. The water is warm and very swimmable and especially great for all kinds of surfing. Low tide is a thing of profound beauty at anytime, esp. at dusk.
