Pros: Massive! Very impressive. Beautiful scenery Cons: None for me.
Our trip to Devil's Tower started out as a drizzly overcast day. Not ideal by any means. But it didn't seem to lesson the excitement my kids felt. After all, visiting this massive rock that resembles a tree stump and made famous by its appearance in ...
Pros: Good Scenery; It's the first national monument Cons: Remote Location
Devil’s Tower National Monument is a large, rock tower, located in northeast Wyoming. This monument is remotely located and takes some time to reach. It holds the honor of being the nation’s first national monument. Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devil’s ...
Pros: Inspiring, full of historic stories Cons: None
Whether created by a large bear or a spire of magma, Devil's Tower is as entrancing today as it was 94 years ago when it was named the United State's first National Monument and is still as popular as it has been among Native Americans for...
Pros: Extremely fascinating and unusual behemoth of a rock formation. Cons: Not as conveniently located as road maps may seem to indicate. Little else to do.
Towering 867 feet from its base and 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River, Devil's Tower is an awesome sight to behold. The park can be a nice diversion to break up the long drive between Yellowstone and the Black Hills. The visitors center, ...
While we were in the Black Hills about two years ago, we decided to drive up to the Devil's Tower National Monument. It is about a two hour drive from Rapid City, and well worth your time. Even though it is "off the beaten" path.....you will be...
Pros: Nice place to stop for a day Cons: Should be combined with other activities.
Introduction
We stopped by the Devil’s Tower on our trip from Houston, Texas to Washington State. It was somewhat unplanned, as we had intended to head west through the Rocky Mountain National Park. Upon entering the park the rangers told...
If someone were to ask what Devil's Tower was made of, the thought of mashed potatoes might enter you mind for half a second...but this amazing feature is much more than the backdrop for a movie.
Pros: A magnificent vista, breaking up an otherwise long drive across northern Wyoming. Cons: For those in a hurry, the trip may feel too much like an unnecessary detour.
For the millions of travelers who visit both Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore on the same swing of the Rockies, there are a few choices of what to do in-between: go as fast as you can from one to the other, divert yourself to Montana and Little Big Horn...
Pros: Great climbing Cons: Easy routes get used often. Arrive early or wait for others.
If you want the geological information on this spectacular rock here are the basics. It was the inside of a volcano at one point and time. The magma solidified and the soil around the magma eroded away. Honestly it's an impressive sight to see. You ...
Pros: It's gorgeous, colossal, and unusual! Nice trails! It's a UFO film star! Cons: The drive from the Interstate seemed to take a long time; tiny visitor center/shop.
(Visited Devil's Tower Summer 2003.) My kids (8 and 10 then) and I arrived about 7:45 p.m. shortly before the visitor center/gift shop closed. Nonetheless, we did get to look in the shop for a little bit and then we proceeded to take the walk around ...
While I was on a summer-long trip around the west, on the way back I decided to stop at Devil's Tower for the second time in my life. I remembered having went there when I was little and being blown away by the size and thinking that it couldn't have...
I used to live within 60 miles of Devils Towers and I visited this area over a half a dozen times. It is between The Black Hills of South Dakota and Yellowstone, and only a hour off the interstate. It is definitely worth a half day detour to visit this...
Pros: Nice rest stop Cons: Another tourist trap made possible by a natural wonder.
I made a stop at Devils Tower on the way from Mt Rushmore to Yellowstone National park.I was amased how far you can see it before ariving and after leaving. I think it looks better from a distance then upclose.Yes you must pay to get into the park. But ...
Pros: the massive size, unbeliveable views, wild life Cons: none, quite a remote location though
When you are driving towards this massive monument which is the main point of this 1,347 acre area, it makes you feel so small, and it makes the world feel so much bigger than you ever thought. The tower rising to a staggering 845 feet, seems to be...
Unique formation - worth seeing by trailhound in Hotels & Travel, - Top 500,May 23 '04
Pros: One of a kind geological formation.
Not too crowded. Easy drive from Mt Rushmore. Cons: Not much else in the immediate vicinity.
Devil's Tower is so unusual and visually stunning that I would definitely recommend visiting. The long extinct volcano core stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding landscape of gently rolling hills in NE Wyoming. There is a walking trail around the base of the formation that is littered with fallen remnants of the volcano, and rock climbers were going up and down the whole time we were there. They say that on top is just short grasses and sandy soil plus an occasional rodent - even small snakes have been seen on top! Observant visitors will notice that the vegetation at the base differs, depending on which side of the formation you are on due to the strong shadows cast on the northern side.
