BMW 5-Series: The Mona Lisa, With Zits

Pros: Unparalleled handling precision, creamy torque, superb ride, available manual transmission.
Cons: Ergonomically challenged secondary controls, slushy automatic transmission, not cheap.
The Bottom Line: Still the runaway class leader for people who like to drive. Yes, there’s electronic overkill. Yes, iDrive stinks. But in the end, the plusses far outweigh the minuses.

Background Judging by the scathing professional reviews it’s received, you might think that BMW’s radically redesigned 5-Series has been a catastrophic flop. “You can’t miss the new 5-Series,” began Car & Driver’s ...

Would be perfect without iDrive - BMW 5-series Wagon

by pilotpat Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500

Pros: Wonderfully solid, exceptionally performing, and impressively refined vehicle. More versatile and better looking than sedan.
Cons: iDrive possibly the worst automotive design feature since the Edsel's steering hub-mounted pushbutton automatic
The Bottom Line: Outstanding luxury wagon. Much more versatile, and in my opinion better looking, than the sedan, creature comforts are truly luxurious. iDrive climate/audio needs to go.

I just returned from a family vacation to Bavaria and Austria, where I was upgraded by Avis (a review in and of itself) to a brand-new BMW 5-series wagon with all the bells and whistles. What an experience. Tested Vehicle, with key standard and ...

Pros: What an engine... perfection! Great drive too!
Cons: Everything else!
The Bottom Line: Don't buy it unless you HAVE TO have it.

I am just mind-boggled. This car confuses me and it's frustrating. I only hope I can sum this up in very little writing because I will begin to blab when I get into the details of this... Frankenstein monster... I have no idea how to put my ...

Pros: great handling, performance, stability, looks and comfort... go in snow without too much worry
Cons: i drive still is a pain after 6 months
The Bottom Line: Buy it. Worth the few buck more than the acura rl, infinity m and the lexus gs300. I'm thrilled. Glad I waited for the 5 with awd.

bmw 530 xi took delivery dec 12, 2006 ordered 11/9/05... delivered as promised. Drove through snowy winter of 2006 with tires as supplied (all weather). Snow tires not needed that season with brand new all weathers. Ride and performance are ...

2006 525 XI, what a Lemon!

Pros: Sport package makes it fun to drive on back roads.
Cons: Too darn complex for it's own good! Buy a BMW, never again!
The Bottom Line: This car is too much money and too much technology. After all the problems with this car we don't trust it to drive it more than 100 miles from home!

I made the mistake of trading out of an Audi Allroad for this "all wheel drive" 525 XI, hoping to get better fuel mileage with the smaller 6 cylinder engine. Since September this car has been in the shop nearly as long as we've had it to drive! Sure, ...

Pros: Individual looks, superb build quality, great road presence, fantastic handling on minor roads.
Cons: A few technical issues still to be ironed out.
BMW has achieved yet again, the best executive saloon in it's class. Following in the footsteps of the E39, the E60 model is just as well balanced as the older car, but far more refined. Fresh new looks and performance to match, you will sit and wonder exactly how they can make a car of this type that is quite so quiet in the cabin.
I love it!
