Pros: Small, sleek, sexy, white hot, powerful, amazing sound Cons: Battery life questionable, requires reset if powered goes down completely
I purchased this iPod for my wife, to replace a much lesser quality 128MB MP3 player. I should have spent the cash and got the iPod the first time. This iPod puts all the others to shame. There is nothing I have seen that meets this unit in the ...
Pros: Your whole music library in your hands. And it's the prettiest. Cons: Battery life is only mediocre.
Yup, it's been a year with my iPod, third generation, 20 GB'er. While this is far from being the first review out there on this product, I think that having this thing for so long qualifies me to talk about some battery life issues. Also, I'm just lazy. ...

Pros: Utterly, totally, and fantastically reliable, iPod sleekness, easy to use Cons: CAN'T BE USED AS AN HDD!!! Screen + software to a minor degree
Why'd I buy it? Well, I didn't; I wouldn't spend good money on a gadget like this. It was, however, given to me in June 2004 as a High School Graduation present. I have also never been one that liked to fit into the crowd by buying the same stuff as ...
Pros: 5000 songs, goes anywhere, 8-10 hour battery, envy getter Cons: You will fear dropping it; Pricey; Earbuds are good, but tricky

Pros: small, compact, easy to use Cons: battery discharges fairly quick when updated on a PC

Pros: small, stylish, holds (for most) an entire cd collection Cons: expensive
This is the mp3 player that puts all the others to shame. First, it can hold (for many people) their entire cd collection and when one is on the go, this is a good thing. It eliminates the need to take some 20 cds plus a player with you on a trip. ...

I received a 20gb 3rd Generation iPod for my 18th birthday, and I've got to say, it is by far the most innovative, feature-packed music player available on the market. Which is perhaps why the iPod has overwhelming control over the portable music player ...
Pros: Designed BY people who use D-music players FOR people who use them. Read the review. Cons: Battery life is weak, must have windows XP for PC users

Pros: Capacity, beautiful appearance, small size, availability of accessories Cons: Battery life, sometimes buggy, scratches easily
I bought my iPod in fall of 2003 after serious contemplation. I decided that, yes, I did want any of my albums or mp3s accessible at any moment, and that yes, $400 was worth the money. Fifteen months later, I still don't regret the decision at all. ...

Pros: Great storage, compact size, stylish looks, user friendly Cons: unreplacable battery, earphones die out quickly

Pros: best mp3 player interface, arguably the best interface for the iPods Cons: screen died after being in a hot car

3 in a year and a half. Garbage 40GB by pilotguy13 ,Jul 28 '05
Pros: Good fashion statement, lots of storage Cons: Battery life, durability sucks, Apple support sucks scratches very easily
I only use this ipod when I fly. It sits on a bag, and thats about it. I am now on my third one. The first, Apple replaced after I twisted them repeatedly on the phone, and refused to pay them 49 dollars to send me a box, so I could send my ipod to them, and then they could send one back. The first one, my computer failed to recognize that it was hooked up, so I could not Sync. The second one, refused to take a charge after about 6 months, and eventually died. I had a 2 year replacement contract with compusa, and wound up getting a 60GB color for free. That was the only good deal in this. The battery life always was horrible, the thing always needed resetting, and it had the easiest life you could have as an electronic component. My girlfriend had a Dell Jukebox, and loves it! IPOD is a crazed fad I believe. There are better.
Pros: Capacity, Styling Cons: Too expensive, battery life both immediate and long term.
This was a Christmas gift. The ipod is a work of art and very nice to look at. It's really neat how it can store so many songs. The jog dial is sensitive and it seems like the best way to navigate through 20 gigs of songs.
I am sort of dissappointed in some aspects however. The battery life is not good at all. Usually about 2 hours. If you don't follow the directions exactly you'll get reduced battery life I think. I just read an article about how the battery only lasts about a year and a half and then it's very expensive to replace. My hold button doesn't seem to work well so I'll have to deal with warranty probably. Overall, I would expect more from such an expensive product and I would not buy one again.
Pros: Light, compact, much more convenient than dragging around a bunch of CDs. Cons: Battery life, only one color available.
My husband bought this for me for my birthday, along with some accessories for use in the car. It holds our entire CD collection with about 3G to spare. It's so wonderful to have all of those songs handy. It's fun to use while I'm a passenger in a car, but it's too dangerous for me to use it while I'm driving; I have to pull over to fiddle with it, get it on the right selection, then get back on the road. It's also fun to show it to people and explain to them how much music it holds and how great it sounds. I predict that Apple will someday offer this in several colors. I hope so! I'll probably need to trade up one day and if I do, I want a pink one instead of a white one. A silly detail, maybe, but whaddya expect from a girl? ;-)
Pros: huge capacity, solid, sexy Cons: Poor quality headphones and case
Wow!
Oh okay, got my iPod from www.warehouse.com for a steal of a price. It's a second generation 20 GB iPod. I was able to get the Mac version for $200 less than the advertised price of the PC WiniPod. I have a PC so all I did was hook it up to my firewire card, download the PC iPod updated the firmware with a program from Apple's website, ran it, and ta diddly da, worked with my PC. I'd say that was worth a $200 savings.
Benefits of the iPod:
-Sexy!
-GREAT sound. I've listened to it with the included earbuds, higher rated noise-canceling headphones, and in the car with a tape adapter and all sounded amazing.
-Buttons are easy to manipulate.
-LOTS of capacity. I can carry my entire song and audio book collection (from www.audible.com) and still have room for pictures of my pet amoeba. (You can't see pictures on the iPod, but you can upload all sorts of files for transfer from one computer to another. Both must have firewire capabilities.)
-Fast data transfer, important with a larger capacity device.
-Supports www.audible.com audiobooks. I work out and listen to audio books every day.
Not made for long distance runners by knobbyhead ,May 26 '04
Pros: Great if you don't move it. Cons: Too heavy. Skips, freezes up, sensitive to movement.
Total frustration is what I experienced and nothing more. There is a 25 minute skip device that keeps it from skipping for the 25 minutes, but after that it stops intermittently. It even froze up, I finally gave up after I spent more time fooling with it than I did running. It also is a lot heavier than any other device I have ever used, so it was very awkward.
Be careful, if you buy this product you are stuck with it, unless you want to pay a 20% restocking charge (at The Mac Store). I gave them such a hard time, they finally took it back.
I am now back to using my same $20. gadget that I have been using for 7 years now and very happy once again
Beware - USB cable needed for PC units by gishapir ,Oct 10 '03
Pros: Really light and cool looking. Cons: does not come with a USB cable to connect to the PC.
I just bought the 20 GIG version from the Apple Store in SOHO. While apple has brilliantly marketed the WINDOWS compatibility, they have NOT mentioned anywhere (even on the box) that one would most likely need a USB cable to connect it to the computer. When I called, they said that it wasn't cost effective for them to include the cable since most NEW computers (mine is a 10 month old DELL)come equipped with a FIREWIRE port and card. Bul-cr-p.
I just wanted people to know that they will most likely need to purchase the USB cable.
Simple beauty at its best by scottlewis ,Dec 31 '03
Pros: Navigation
Sound quality
Ease of use
Size Cons: Buttons too sensitive & don't work with gloves on.
Could be lighter
Best in class, albeit, expensive player that looks great! It fits into any pocket easily and comes with everything you'd want when buying just the standard package.
Pros:High Performance, Great Sound, Cool colors and Features, Very, Very easy to use Cons: A little heavy. Pricey, you must love well designed gadgets.
Before purchasing this IPod I had used several other MP3 players ranging in size, shape, and capacity. The IPod outperforms all of them. I loaded ITunes onto my pc and my mac and had no problems syncing the IPod, however, the mac was the easier of the two. I only downside, and it is not really a downside, is that it is a little heavy to run with. Most MP3 players with the capacity of the IPod would also be heavy to run with.
Yes, it's awesome, and ... ? by soundgardener ,Dec 09 '03
Pros: Lots of space, easy to use, syncs fast, great accessories Cons: Battery life, Night Light?, Read the system requirement specs first
Okay. The iPod is beyond incredible. It is as cool as it looks, and with 20GB you have stupid space. Plus the extra functions and accessories are cool as hell.
So what is wrong with it? 1)Battery life. The box says 8 hours, though you'll only get 3 hours if you are lucky. 2) Night light? What night light? Good luck finding anything in the dark with this display screen. 3) By "PC compatible" Apple means this iPod is compatible with USB port equipped PC's. Without one, you are sh*t out of luck. And if you have Windows ME installed (as I did), you can't download iTunes, so you'll have to switch your operating system to Windows XP. Installing a USB port and switching your OS can be a lot of work, and is going to add considerably to the cost of owning your iPod.
That said, it is totally worth it. This thing is awesome!
I am so grateful Bill opened his Gates to Apple !! by bft4x4 ,Dec 21 '03
Pros: Pocket Side, Incredible Sound, Easy Menu Navigation, Music Capacity. Cons: Extend the Battery life to get us through the work day.
I received the 20GB as a Birthday gift and I cannot put it down. I play it at work all day and I am running out of juice at just under 8 hours - I know 'cause I work 10 hrs :-( If you keep the backlight off, it will last longer). No problem seeing the menu in the dark in the dark - as it's my 'new' toy I love to listen in bed. The menu is easy to navigate. The sound is like being in Symphony Hall, that's what blew me away - almost makes me want to get into classical music ! I'm running Windows XP and using the firewire for my connection (No biggy to me there was no USB). I am just grateful Bill opened his Gates to Apple !! If you order from Apple on-line they will engrave a inscription for you. How cool is that. My 'techy' purchases for 2003 were TIVO, an LCD 50" TV and this ranks up there with them. A must have for all music lovers. Sue in San Diego
MP3 player or external hard drive that plays music? by ch2s ,Mar 25 '04
Pros: Good interface Cons: Poor sound quality, poor battery life
My friend bought one of these and I was surprised how bad the sound quality was but I thought it was just the cheap headphones that came with it. So we compared it with my Pocket PCs sound using the same earphones and my Pocket PC sounds miles better, the iPod sound is very dull and lacks much detail.
Is this an mp3 player or an external hard drive that also plays music as an extra feature? Because that seems like what it is with its oversized capacity and very poor sound.
