How my mom turned me into an iPod fan

by dtobias Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Mar 30 '04
Pros: Phenomenally huge storage capacity, excellent usability, and chic, trendy design.
Cons: It 'glitched out' on me a couple of times, forcing me to reinstall the system.
"How about an iPod?" That's what my mom said as she was trying to think of something to give me for Chanukkah that I actually wanted, and didn't already have. This always stumps her every time the holidays or my birthday roll around, and resorting to ...

Excellent! Superb! Wonderful!

by mcmeadows1 , Mar 23 '04
Pros: Excellent design, engineering, sound quality and functionality. Large capacity hard drive is fantastic!
Cons: Display screen, while very good, is still somewhat dim and difficult to read.
I have only been using my new Apple iPod 40GB portable music player for four days now. Discounting my intial confusion and frustration concerning the installation of the communication software on my notebook computer, I have been extremely pleased with ...

An Audiophile's Take on iPod and iTunes

by LSMillers Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jul 04 '04
Pros: Outstanding ease of use and convenience — get your entire music collection into digital format.
Cons: Some sound quality issues. Limit iTunes Music Store use and avoid the FM transmitter.
5/7/05 update: You can now easily get a direct-connection adaptor for your car for less than $300, and the attitude of the car stereo dealers has gone from laughing me out the door to telling me how quick they can do it for me! What a difference a ...

Pros: Design, feels like a winner

I’ve held the future of computing in my hand and its name is Ipod. For those unaware, the Ipod is Apple’s hugely successful music playing computer, which has been so successful it has spawned a dozen competitors. How successful is the Ipod? This year ...

UPDATED: A different take on the iPod

by dennisma , Jun 29 '04
Pros: Seems to be open enough for 3rd parties to add hardware and software. Extend functionality.
Cons: FRAGILE!! Bad experience with Support and terrible experience with Apple Store. Read update.
This review has been updated. There is an updated section at the end. I got the 40 Gb iPod for father's day and like most everyone on here I like if fine. I think my biggest worry I have regarding it is the complaint I read regarding replacement ...

My Sweet iPod, R.I.P. - 5/25/04-6/7/04

by garethusa Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Jun 16 '04
Pros: Best value for space/use - especially if you have Mac & iTunes.
Cons: Battery replacement and total charges concern. A delicate device.
As with most things changing the world quickly, it takes me a while to get on the technology band wagon. Took me a while to get a cell phone, bought my first computer only two years ago, just converted to driving VW's latest diesel technology, and now ...

by abolinger , Oct 04 '03
Pros: Lots of refinements versus prior versions, more compact size!
Cons: Battery life slightly shorter than prior 2G iPods, battery glitch with hibernate mode
I received a 2nd generation 20 GB iPod for Christmas last year. It has been the best consumer electronic device that I've ever owned, trailed by my iMac and my PowerBook. For my birthday, I got an 3rd generation iPod 40 GB model. When reading this revi ...

Cons: limited battery life, get the extended warranty, power drains when not in use, scratch prone
Ok, I'm a techno junkie. I love my gadgets. I love to tweak my computers. I'm a PC guy who works in Windows environments and has been a Linux hobbyist for years. Buy an Apple? Blasphemy! But you say they make the world's best MP3 player....and it ...

Pros: Storage, sounds, inline remote, speedy file transfers
Cons: iTunes, price, earbuds, carrying case

Cons: Lousy software, dismal protection against errors, expensive, no manuals and too habitual.

The iPod dramatically changed the way I manage and listen to my music collection

by mkelch , Apr 21 '04
Pros: A stunning tool (along with iTunes) for managing and accessing a large music collection
Cons: a bit pricey, somewhat delicate, interface takes a bit of getting used to
The problem I wanted iPod to solve: I have over 1500 vinyl LPs and over 1000 CD's. My favorite cuts from the vinyl have been ripped onto my Mac hard drive, and of course the CD's are already digital files.....so, I wanted a single device that would ...

Cons: Cost (purchase & support), lame case (buy a different one)

great design - poor battery life
by jtbh6b1 ,Feb 29 '04
Pros: Design and simplicity of use
Cons: Battery life
I've tried several MP3 players and this one is by far the best. It is literally "useful art" in the practicality of it's design. Never before has an MP3 player been so easy to use - from the PC software to the play lists to the controls on the device. Definitely worth the premium vs. other devices.

One major concern, however, is the short battery life. Mine gets 7 hours on a full charge. To me, this is low by about 20 hours. Maybe my expectations are too high... but how about a battery upgrade from Apple?

by jimbuk ,Feb 05 '04
Pros: Best of Breed Awesome sounding earphones Ease of use Mass storage
Cons: Wish it came in more colors-Mac white is driving me nuts!
The IPOD sets the standard for high storage MP3 or AAC music files. The pressure-sensitive spin dial is unrivaled in ease of use and efficiency- compared to switches and toggles and push buttons on other ones. Careful with it being compatible with both Windows and Mac. It is compatible with Windows OR Mac-big difference-you have to reformat to work with Windows so if you want to share it across Windows and Mac, forget it. I haven't had the battery life problem other people have had, but then I've only had it a few months. Alarm clock is a cool added feature.

iPod is overrated. Buy iRiver H320 INSTEAD!
by wazoomr ,Dec 06 '04
Pros: Scroll wheel.
Cons: Converts all your mp3 files to iTunes format...evil! Apple charges a fortune to repl. batt.
iPod converts all your mp3 files to the evil, itunes format which locks you into Apple h/w and s/w media players. This severely limits, or eliminates the compatibility of your music files with other mp3 devices and applications.

iRiver H300 series maintains the file format of the source, and requires NO driver. It uses a generic driver, and is a portable USB storage device. It plays mp3, and wma. It's hi-res color display views jpeg images. It has a great FM radio. It reads text files, and it has an excellent audio recorder!

The only thing it has going for it is the scroll wheel....whoopee.

Yeah it's a iPod! Yeah it's awsome! For only 3 hours.
by ithoughtnot ,Jan 15 '04
Pros: Nice look, touch interface (nice),a lot of accesories
Cons: Battery life, very, very prone to bumps and dinks! battery life under five hours,
I just bought a 40gb iPod. This thing is Awsome! The portability is great! and yes it is small...very small, especially the fact that it holds about 10,000 songs! behind all that, it does have its flaws. I bring mine to school alot, so i may listen to it during off time in class or between classes. So I end up playing music for about an hour( on a full charge) and i come home with (what it shows me) about half full.I would not count on the battery, i would get the back-up battery that goes in at the firewire port. Also, the iPod has a pretty face. KEEP IT THAT WAY! i have a case and i have a medium scratch on the screen and i have no idea how it got their. I would caution anyone who braught it anywhere naked. everything else is just fine, and the AAC format is awsome as well. The nice thing too is that they have companies like Belkin making a crapload of accesories for the iPod. Alot of options!

Imbeciles in Apple Service
by tissot ,Dec 29 '05
Pros: mass adoption
Cons: bad service, costly "free" warranty service.
I downloaded the latest firmware update to Ipod.

Long story short. No amount of "resetting" would allow access or operation. Exclamation / file symbol error.

Under 1-year Warranty

Call Apple Service - They say send it in. (at a cost of $ 50).

Service center looks at it - says nothing is wrong!

Get ipod back - same symptom (the exclamation / file screen in the window)

Decent product - very bad service.

iPod Z BEST MP3
by tordcaspell ,Feb 07 '04
Pros: ALL your music all the time
Cons: Kinda spendy but worth it and Will ruin repetitive commercial radio for you.
First I would like to say that the iPod is the ONLY electronic device that has changed my life for the better. It allows me to have ALL my music with me wherever I go. Put it on random and it's like you own personal soundtrack. I can hardly stand to listen to the radio anymore. I am spoiled. I started with the original 5 Gig [ Still going strong but FULL. ] Then I had to get a 20 which has all my music on it and is still only 3/4 full. NOW I could not resist the NEW i Pod and got a 40 Gig that is kinda empty. I love the new dock thing. I have dropped my iPod 3 feet to a steel deck and it did not even skip, I think the plastic was slightly dented but that adds charm. I have never got the battery life they say but close 8 hours is about my max and less if I jump around the playlists. and ALL computer companys lie about the battery life. Now I am afraid I will sooner or later have to get a mini Pod too.

Disapointing but nice at the same time...
by brennendupere ,Jun 30 '04
Pros: 10,000 song memory,backlit screen,popularity
Cons: battery,costumer care,desigh-back,non-turning wheel
Well I have been wanting an ipod for a year now but cant aford it. Finally I was able to try one out because my cousin had one but I was not very impressed when comparing to the dell dj 20. I found that the non-turning wheel became very anoying because it caused heat friction and became uncomterble to use after a while. The battery life was poor and the back scratced very easily! The thing that is nice about the ipod is the 10,000 song memory. I am very happy with my Dell dj 20 and would recomend over the ipod! Better price more for the buck and better battery life!

Do yourself a favor get a Dell dj 20 more for the buck!
You cant go rong with Dell!

Don't waste your money..... on anything else!
by skimboarder200 ,Jan 29 '04
Pros: -Capacity -Size -Design -Basically everything you can think of
Cons: -Cost
Well Apple sure have done it again! 10,000 of your favorite songs in your pocket! I ordered one of these about two weeks ago along with the new iBook G4 and had too wait a week for the iPod since it was back-ordered. I got it and was amazed how small it is! I had the original 5GB model and it looks like an antique beside the new one! In short it is THE best MP3 Player on the market at the moment. If you have been thinking about getting one... don't think any longer, just buy one!

A Luxury Item For Sure...
by warprin ,Jan 12 '05
Pros: Popular. Solid all-around mp3 player. Works perfectly with iTunes (go figure). Massive storage.
Cons: Popular. Batterylife short and replacementpricey. Bit overrated but seemsto hold togetherbetter than Zen or Lyra.
It boggles the mind, why people are so willing to pay so much for nothing more than a decent/good mp3 player. Me thinks all the MS haters/Apple lovers really helped to boost sales.

A 3hr charge is needed for 8 hours of battery life. Itunes doesn't even offer the best prices for mp3 downloads although the variety is pretty good. Firewire. Good controls and navigation allow you to move quickly through menus and folders. Can only make one playlist on the fly which cannot be edited or saved. Songs can be organized to play based on ratings you provide - pretty neat. If you're going to spend hundreds of dollars BUY THE WARRANTY. Don't be stupid, especially if you're an ipod addict. Just buy the warranty! Better still buy the M9268LL/A model (October 2004) with plays for 12 hours instead of 8.

Not all its cracked up to be !
by soconnor ,Jul 09 '04
Pros: 10,000 songs, design, iTunes, size
Cons: Poor sound quality, clunky navigation, b&w screen, no stop button, graphic equaliser poor
Overall a brilliant product, but it has flaws. The biggest flaw is that low bass sounds reproduce poorly with the iPod standard earphones. To get the best sound you need to invest in quality earphones.

iLove iPod

Pros: Really cool looking and MASSIVE storage.
Cons: High price. (makes me worry about dropping it.)
As a long time PC user I was skeptical about using a Mac based product only in terms of compatibility. The look is cool and the price is high - but I went for it.

I am glad I did. The iTunes works nice and does everything without much work.

I even added the iTrip radio transmitter to play in my old truck that doesn't have a CD player - just a radio. Works great!

WARNING: Battery is not replaceable
by tomthebrewer ,May 17 '04
Pros: Good sound for 18 months
Cons: NON REPLACEABLE BATTERY
I was amazed when i called Mac and asked why my battery life was down, after only 18 months. Mac told me that they could replace the battery, but would cost more than buying a new unit. Wow, what were they thinking. Now I have a 15 minute battery life, and it's decreasing daily. What Crap. Only but units that allow for you to change the rechargeable battery.
Do not buy one of these unless you plan to replace it after 18 months.
