A present from the wife, this is one gift that will get very used but not abused. The first day of ownership saw more scratches than my mobile phone has accumulated in 6 months! The plastic outer is the most fragile case I have ever come across. Why they ...

Pros: Portable, easy to use, convenient!
Cons: Decent car adapter expensive! Almost half the price of the iPod itself!
I bought my iPod about 3 months ago, in lieu of a new CD player for my car. I figured that I could get one for the same price, but then have all of my music completely portable for everywhere, as well as for my vehicle (with an adapter)! I cannot live ...

Pros: Chic style, easy navigation
Cons: OVERPRICED, limitd warranty, OVERPRICED, not very durable (4th generation)

Don't Buy
by tr107369 ,Jan 12 '07
Pros: it can save and play songs on the device; it's cute to look at;
Cons: no technical help without additional money; not worth the money or heartache
I bought the Apple Ipod for $250 over a year ago. It has been the worst purchase I have ever made. I made the mistake of syncing the thing to 2 computers, which worked a couple of times. However, for nearly a year now, I cannot create a library on either computer. Thus, the songs I have some of which I purchased can only be listened to on the Ipod, cannot be placed on a computer, disc, or any other device; making this a $250 piece of garage. I refuse to add to it since all the other songs I purchased are stuck in this useless device. I going back to purchasing CDs.

Apple ipod 4th Gen.-I'm lovin it
by itriedifailed ,Feb 08 '05
Pros: smooth design, wide support list, large space.
Cons: scratches VERY easily, would like longer battery life.
I've used many hard drive mp3 players in my time. So far the only one I have enjoyed is this sleek, improved, low priced apple ipod. Ipod has become the new benchmark in which all mp3 players are tested. I'de say the only problem with it is you have to by some kind of case for it(I use iskin and thats worked well) because you scratches and cracks very easily.

Want one cheap?
by evildrtoad ,Apr 18 '06
Pros: The white earbuds make you a great target for muggings in the inner city.
Cons: The white earbuds make you a great target for muggings in the inner city.
I guess I can't complain, since I didn't buy the thing. (It was a gift.) We have 3 in our household, and all 3 of them have problems. One failed completely, was replaced, and the replacement failed as well. The other two (mine included) have developed the habit of "locking up" - they stop playing music after about an hour, and then all controls cease to function. You have to let the battery die completely, recharge it, and then you get to listen for about another hour - until it locks up again. I'm looking into something else, a lot cheaper. Then this "gem" will go on Ebay.

BAH!!!
by chocolatino ,May 28 '06
Pros: Sexy, Easy to use, Ability to store non sound files such as jpegs, word documents.
Cons: Durability!!!
I'd been in love with my ipod for about a year when it had started to freeze in the middle of songs and become slower on starting up. This is when it had just been fully charged, and then it just wouldn't switch on at all.
A flashing symbol then would come up which according to apple translates as 'hard disk failure'.
I was a little shocked that they taken time to design an icon to tell you when the hard disk had failed... strange?!hmmmmm...
As a result I'd recommend many not to go for the ipod..

Apple might want to reconsider the Ipod Battery
by cyrus187 ,May 01 '05
Pros: Sound, Size, Durability, Ease of use
Cons: Battery Life
Although the Ipod 20 can hold a ton of songs. After a year of regular use, the Ipods battery failed to charge. Although Apple will sometimes replace your battery for free, its a hassle to get it mailed because of the time you have to wait. The ipod sound is very nice especially through the Apple headphones included with Purchase. I would recommend this, but dont leave this baby in the charger to long.

IPOD - When it goes bad Apple will fix it!
by swipers_mom ,Jul 07 '05
Pros: When it broke, they fixed it with no hassle to me.
Cons: Why did it break - I hope it is not too fragile!
I received the Apple 4G 20GB player for Christmas. I used it constantly. As other reviewers have said it is easy to add music, and what is more important to me, it can hold a lot of audiobooks. Who wants to carry around 8 CDs or more (some of the Harry Potter books have in excess of 20 CDs!) when you can put the whole thing on your small IPOD.

Anyway, a couple of months after recieving it, the thing started acting up. It skipped tracks and it would freeze up. One day it flat out would not work. I was disappointed to say the least. However, it was still under warranty. I contacted Apple, they sent me a box to ship it back in (for free!) and less than a week later I have what appears to be a brand new IPOD.

I was very pleased with the lack of hassle, the quick response, and the shiny new working IPOD they sent me.

An iPod with enough room for anyone
by danaedwards ,Dec 30 '05
Pros: Lots of room to store books and music
Cons: I find these players heavy when I a jog. A shuffle would be better.
I searched long and hard to find an mp3 player that met my needs. I looked at the various sizes of iPods and quickly came to the conclusion that the 20GB iPod was exactly what I was needing.

I listen to two books per month that I get from Audible.com and I listen to music about 1 hour per day. I have almost every CD that I own loaded on this iPod and I have about 10 unabridged books on here. This iPod has more than enough room for everything that I need. This was the biggest question that I had when I was looking for a player. I hope this information helps.

I found the user interface for iTunes, which you use to load music on your iPod from your computer, very easy to use. Apple has done a great job with it.

My 20G ipod
by fpd18 ,Jan 02 '05
Pros: 20Gb of space
Cons: not much battery life.
I love my new ipod I just got it for Christmas. I have already downloaded 20 songs into it, and have not even made a dent n the memory. The system is very easy to use. It is designed to be user friendly and it is just that. My only complained is the battery life of this product. It is stated on the box up to 12 hours of continuous music play, but I only get about 6 at best. I still love my ipod it holds up to 20G of music that is huge. You really cannot beat this mp3 player. I would recommend it to anyone with a computer.

by thebittersea ,Feb 05 '05

Cons: software is difficult to use. weight. battery life.
the first thing i hate about this thing is itunes. i've been a wintel user and for the life of me i can't get use to this itune thing. it doesn't sort the way i want it and it doesn't import mp3s if the tags aren't typed in correctly. you end up with missing albums and songs. it's also a little bit heavy than i'd expected. the ear piece if also uncomfortable to wear. anyways, i got this piece of hardware for christmas and i thought i'd like to share my experience with everyone. though the sound quality is superb, apple should really make an user friendly software.

Ipod rules!!
by blank_point ,Mar 17 '07
Pros: 20GB memory, decent battery life
Cons: Black and white screen
Ok, its the original MP3 player and beat everybody else in the market because of it superior sound quality and reliability.
I bought it over 2 years back and has been one of my most dependable gadgets. with a memory capacity of 20GB (5000 songs) i can save my important files and pics by the hundreds. It therefore serves as a heavy duty usb pen drive ( although it means that you have to carry your usb cable around)
The sound quality and touch wheel are already world famous and nothing more needs to said!

20 GB Apple iPod

Pros: Holds up to 5,000 songs
Cons: N/A
I have a 20 GB Apple ipod digital music player, which hold a maximum of 5,000 4 minute songs. The ipod has the ability to play the following formats: AAC,MP3,WAV,AIFF. It has a good long lasting battery life for up to 5-6 hours. Songs are very clear. The click wheel is a nice navigation feature for selected a song to play.
While listening to a song on the go you can play games that come standard on the iPod like: Brick,Music Quiz,Parachute,Solitaire. With Itunes putting songs on your iPod is easy as 1-2-3. Portability is great, its nice and sleek.

Apple iPod forth generation
by kaicheesecake ,Jun 07 '06
Pros: sound, very light, tiny
Cons: would like longer battery life
The Apple iPod forth generation is very similar as the third generation. The weight of the forth generation is around 6oz, it is very convenience to bring it out. Unlike the third generation, the battery of forth generation can hold four hours longer than the third generation. But I still think it is not long enough for me. And the sound quality is very good; I can hear the song clearly. I think it is better than the third generation.

Summarize all the advantages; it is valuable to get one.

Pros: 12 hr battery, small, excellent sound, very portable
Cons: None it's great
The Apple iPod is great. With up to 5,000 songs how can you go wrong. Plus there are games when you are bored like: Solitare, Brick (which is Javanoid), and Parachute. It has excellent quality. It's light enough to carry around and is small enough to fit in your pocket. There is a software discs with iTunes and an iPod Updater. iTunes is used to put the songs from CDs or the iTunes Music Store on to your iPod. To put songs onto it is easy you plug it in to your computer and it downloads automatically. at Apple.com you can get it shipped and engraved for free. I use mine all the time, but I would recommend a case to protect it.

ipod broken after 15 months
by oakleyd2 ,Nov 05 '06
Pros: nice toy while it lasted
Cons: bad customer service, no repair options
I bought an Apple ipod 20GB U2 Edition about 15 months ago. I started to have problems where the ipod would freeze and would not be able to be turned off. I would have to wait until the charge ran out, then recharge it before i could get it to respond. Now it won't play any songs. So, i called the ipod service and they told me that it would cost $250 to repair it. Which is about the cost of a new apple 30gb ipod video. They also said i should have gotten an extended warranty, which by the way was never offered to me. So, after $300 for the ipod, and probably another $500 buying songs on itunes i have a very nice paper weight. My advice for anyone thinking about buying an ipod...stay away. The customer service is far from helpful...which by the way they tried to charge me $29.95 for tech support when i called to ask about the problems. And the only service option they have costs more than a new ipod.

Good, but not that good.
by caljammer ,Mar 14 '07
Pros: Stores a lot of songs.
Cons: Very glitchy, poor battery life.
I got my 20GB Ipod as a gift a few years back. At first, it was the best thing ever, of course it was the first one to the market so that made it seem awesome. But after about 6 months, I started to notice several glitches. Sometimes my Ipod would just turn itself on, sometimes it wouldn't play a whole song before going to the next, and the battery life isn't that great, I have to charge it all the time. Plus, if you use it to run, it gets really glitchy since it is hard drive based. Now, I use a Creative Zen Nano to take on runs, it has flash memory, so there are no problems.

...and even space for music too!
by skyye_b ,Dec 22 '05
Pros: lots of storage space, beautiful design, intuitive operation, pretty sturdy, nice sound.
Cons: battery issues-required to send unit back to apple for replacements. Surfaces easily marred.
20gigs of storage -love it... I practically carry my home & work drives around with me everywhere. My use for this device is more for the practical storage than for listening pleasure - but the audio quality is impressive too. i find the earphones to be awkward & keep popping out but maybe thats just a quirk of my ears.

I'm real happy to be able to carry ALL my audio books (including the Holy Bible - which is a particularly large volume) along with my entire music collection (including the complete works of Bach- in one tiny package - a feat I never thought would be possible.

I also find the Notes Feature very useful, although my notes are rarely as short as the application allows.

Its a little awkward to carry around - I loved the polished finish on it, which lasted about five minutes out of the box. It even managed to pick up fine scratches from the velvet pouch I made for it.

It's a good idea to get a portable battery pack with it, although this makes it rather clunky.

We are on our 5th ipod now...
by m_e_doyle ,Nov 16 '05
Pros: Holds lots of songs, user friendly
Cons: Too fragile!!

I bought my husband one of these ipods for Xmas last year. We are now on our 5th one!! Every single one has stopped working for one reason or another. One was dropped on the carpet, two just died for no apparent reason, one would never work with iTunes.

I feel like I live in the Apple store. We are constantly having to drive an hour to the nearest store to have them replaced. Thank goodness for the 1 year warranty! Unfortunately that is up soon.

I also have an ipod mini which has not given me any problems. (Knock on wood).

Piece of Junk- terrible service
by soverst ,Mar 23 '05

Cons: tech support is terrible and rude. expensive accessories.
It worked for roughly 3 weeks before freezing up. I followed all the instructions (didn’t even take it outside over 95 degrees) and it just stopped. I tried rebooting, etc, and nothing happened. The only thing it does now is scroll through the songs in the window. Now I am on the phone with support and after sitting on hold for 30 minutes, I am apparently talking to the wrong guy. All I want is a physical address to send this junk to, but I keep getting forwarded to support. Everyone at this point has been rude and apparently too busy to answer the phone. For this much money, this thing should work perfectly and support shouldn’t be impolite. Take your money somewhere else. I will. To top it off, I was just told that under no circumstances would my money be refunded even though it is still under warranty.

The IPOD is not what you think , its much less
by vmx7 ,Mar 01 '05
Pros: Its small and fits nicely in your pocket
Cons: battery life / cant download files from it / sound quality not great/
If you think the IPOD is like other mp3 players you are wrong.
The IPOD does not allow you to transfer music OUT of it. So take all your cds , take all your mp3 files you have gathered on your computer , download music from ITUNES and put it into your IPOD and wait for the day when your hard drive goes bad....or you buy a new computer.....or you want to share your music on another computer. Then you find out that you can not.
There are a ton of other mp3 players on the market that dont limit your usage like the IPOD.
The IPOD has a very short battery life.
The IPOD is not the best sounding mp3 player.
The IPOD scratches easily....too easily.
The IPODs graphic equalizer is terrible.
The IPOD only works with ITUNES , so you cant use napster , music match ect.
There are other players out there that surpass the IPOD by far , and are less expensive and allow you to drag and drop files as you wish .

The Best Mp3 player out there
by crazygood ,Jan 20 '05
Pros: Very light at 5.3 Ounces User friendly Good Sound quality Apple's new Click wheel
Cons: Very Fragile Hard Drive
Well, Apple has designed one of the bes Mp3 Players out there. The thing is that it has a Hard drive that spins very very fast. It is VERY fragile, DON"T EVEN THINK ABOUT DROPPING IT.
The hard drive is done if you drop it. CD is defenitely the best quality, but i like AAC and Apple Lossless.

Here's some tips:

To Reset it, hold the Menu and Middle select button together for about 6 seconds.

don't even think about dropping it.

you can Crank AAC files to 320 kbps, to make it sound better.

for once Apple got to feel like Microsoft. I'm sticking with my CD player, but the iPod is good for People that wanna hold thousands of songs with good sound quality. Note:you can always put Mp3 Files on a CD. The back of it is very Scratchable.

You can alway get a Mac Mini, for 500$ at Apple.com

Website: http://www.apple.com/macmini/

Always here for you : )

Pros: stylish, sleek and a large capacity for music.
Cons: I have nothing bad to say about the I-pod, its great!
I love this I-Pod, I bought one just like this one and it is so cool, it easily downloads music from the computer directly into the Mp3 player, its so sleek and easy to use.

Buyer Beware!
by ceiteag ,Aug 17 '06
Pros: sleek, attractive, stylish, popular
Cons: it didn't work.
I purchased a reconditioned ipod 20GB from the Apple Store online. It shipped and arrived very quickly. It was well packaged. It didn't work, straight out of the box. You could hear the hard drive start to spin up, then clunk. Over and over. I called Apple Care and they were happy to walk me through a couple of tests to revive it, but they had to declare it dead as well. I returned it and now I'll buy an mp3 player from someone else.

Good luck!
by badapples44 ,Mar 06 '06
Pros: Ipods are great for carrying your music library conveniently in a compact manner.
Cons: Once you are hooked, you will be subject to Apple's rules: see "review."
Here is my sad tale. I love my pod, but it has taken three trips back to the shop. They don't send you a new iPod or even your old one fixed, but a refurbished unit. Judging by their lack of success in sending me a unit that will work for more than a couple of months, they aren't repairing them well. Maybe it's just my baad luck. I think after three trips to Apple they ought to send you a new unit.

Apple and cheep hardware.
by joeyxadkins ,Jun 19 '06
Pros: Usability of the Ipod and the click wheel.
Cons: the warranty costs after 180 days.
Wow Apples done it this time. They have really put sturdy design to shame first of all the hard drive only has a thin layer of foam instead of thick rubber keeping it safe. The new hold button that had issues with 3rd Gen is still malfuctioning. I Noticed the 5th gen has the same button, I wonder if that version works properly. Apples really gone downhill on the quality of product they produce.

iPod After 30 Days
by ecshanahan ,Oct 23 '04
Pros: A work of art in both appearance and function.
Cons: Easy to scratch and the sound is so good that you could harm your hearing.
I've lived with the iPod now for a little over a month and have several observations. First - you need a case or cover that will protect it from scratches and drops. The case offered at the Apple store is overpriced. Try Best Buy for the same product at about half the price. Second - The sound quality with the ear buds is great, but you can put the volume up too much and do some serious damage to your hearing. If you can remember to keep the sound down, great. If not, consider purchasing some sound isolating earphones for your iPod. Third - the iPod is a great portable drive for computer files, not just music. For students you can look cool but be a geek. Finally - If you get a clear case you can stick a note in the case with your name and phone number. There are people out there who will return lost items and you might be lucky enough to find them.

GREAT MP3 PLAYER
by faizal5k ,May 22 '05
Pros: Great Durability, easy to use, and can be used as a portable hard drive
Cons: Scratches easily and too expensive. It would be better if it was $250.
I got my iPod in Winter of 2004 and I love this thing! It can also be used as a portable hard drive which is pretty cool. Plus, I dropped my iPod FOUR times!! TWICE in my house on my bare floor and TWICE outside on solid ground and it still plays as if it was new. The only thing I have a problem about the iPod is how easily it can be scratched. I just started getting scratches within 2 weeks of when I recieved my iPod.

The one and Only Choice for me
by clzax ,Aug 14 '04
Pros: External Hard Drive,Space,Sound Quality,price,size,weight
Cons: No dock,no remote
iPods have been around for some while, I thought Apple could'nt outdo themselves with their 3rd Generation model, I was proved wrong. This is by far the best iPod Apple has come out with. Aside from the iPod mini, the Click wheel makes it easier to navigate the menu and choose songs, the appearance is not as "classy" as the previous iPod though. Battery life is extended from the previous iPod. Sound Quality and equalization really satifies my picky ears especially with my Logitech Z-680 speakers, Price for the iPod has gone down $100, but you also lose the dock and the remote, those can be purchased seperately. iTunes store is easy to use, but the library is kind of hard to use, so I just use Winamp with the iPod plugin. Also firewire support is available to me with my Soundblaster Audigy 2 Soundcard which makes transferring files and music to my iPod a breeze, especially since I have USB 1.1.
I highly recommend this product for those with music collections over 10GB such as I, and travel a lot.

Bang For The Buck
by bluedragon8 ,Nov 20 '04
Pros: Smart playlists, large storage, click wheel, ease.
Cons: Vulnerable to all scratches, rainbow colors on screen, few games, battery replacement.
I bought a new 20GB iPod on Veteran's Day. The box is situated in an excellent manner - the top half slides open, and all the materials are prepared in neat order. The iPod itself seemed as heavy as a Texas Instruments TI-84 graphing calculator at first, but you eventually become familiar with it. iPod's playlists and iTunes work in harmony, along with song ratings and play counts. iPod knows your interests and filters out the dust. However, the cover and screen are average. My friend accidentally dropped my iPod on the sidewalk, engraving several scars on the front, and one on the screen. The screen contains rainbow colors from time to time, which is probably due to temperature changes and usage. Overall, if you want a powerful digital music player, get an iPod. It is worth every dollar.

Poor quality
by prairiedog ,Jan 30 '05
Pros: It was great the 36 days it worked
Cons: Price, quality
I had my ipod a little over a month, it just stopped working. CompUSA wouldn't exchange or return, the warranty with them was only 21 days. HP support had me run a bunch of diagnostics, said it was a defective hard drive. Said they would send a fed-ex box to ship it in, free of charge, but would probably replace it with a "refurbished" unit. I spent $300 and it lasted a little over a month, and I have to settle for a refurbished unit? It's been 10 days, I'm still waiting for the unit to arrive. For the money, I expected a better quality product.

Good, But Not Perfect
by epweinstein ,Nov 19 '04
Pros: Size, interface
Cons: Cost, included accessories, Volume, sound quality
I must admit, I am not one to get into the exact technical details of my electronics. I get more into reliability, and ease of use, as well as how well the item does what it is supposed to. After reading all of the reviews available about the iPod, I decided to get the 20 gig one because I'm not sure that I could ever come up with 5000 songs let alone 10,000. Truthfully, I think the iPod is well engineered, but poorly marketed. I think for $300, earphones that are higher quality/ and fit better should be included. In addition, the maximum volume is somewhat disappointing. Also, I think that like most PDAs, the iPods, all, should come with a docking station, rather than have just these wires. I think Apple has made a mistake not including these "extras" given the price. All in all, The iPod is useful, I think the sound quality is good, but not CD quality.

MINI IPODS
by werney ,Jan 03 '05
Pros: NONE
Cons: BREAKS TO EASILY, BADLY MADE, APPLE DOES NOT LIVE UP TO ITS REPUTATION
I BOUGHT THIS PRODUCT AND HAD IT ONLY 5 DAYS WHEN THE LCD SCREEN LOOKED LIKE FIREWORKS EXPLODING ON IT. IT WAS IN A PURSE WITH MY CELL PHONE AND WAS NOT DROPPED. I CALLED APPLE BECAUSE I EVEN HAD THE EXTENDED TWO YEAR WARRANTY AND THEY SAID TO FIX IT IT WOULD COST THE STANDARD SERVICE FEE. WHEN I ASKED WHAT THIS FEE WAS THEY SAID $249.00. WOW I PRETTY MUCH HAVE TO BUY A NEW ONE. THIS IS THE BIGGEST RIP OFF PRODUCT I HAVE EVER HAD. EVERYWHERE THERE ARE FORUMS WITH EXTENSIVE PROBLEMS. THIS WAS A POOR PRODUCT AND A DISGRACE TO BE PUT ON THE MARKET. I WISH I HAD READ MORE ABOUT THEM BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. GO ON THE INTERNET AND PUT IN IPOD PROBLEMS BEFORE BUYING!!!!!!!

Pros: Survived a fall to the floor. Capacity. iTrip and accessory selection.
Cons: so far just the price, and it ain't that bad.
You've read all the features before. My dear old Baba dropped my Ipod today and it landed square on the floor. I had wondered about this things durability because of all the sensitive components inside. It survived. I don't recommend ever dropping yours, or letting anyone else hold it, lest they drop it and make you growl but it seems to be perfectly fine and a perfectly horrible spill. Everything intact and functional. Good job so far Apple.

Why Are There So Many "Sad" iPods?
by imagetracker ,Jun 21 '06
Pros: Intuitive, portable
Cons: Hard drive issues?
My mother gave this to me as a gift and for the first year I had it, I loved it. I love iTunes; I found iTunes and the iPod to be intuitive, no problem.

Then, the warranty period expired, which seems to be deadly (in my experience with Apple). With a month of the expiration, I began to see the "sad iPod" icon. For awhile I was able to follow the directions on the Apple website for "resetting" it but eventually, the sad iPod icon simply took over.

What troubles me is that surfing the Internet, I have come across many complaints by other Apple customers with the same problem. (This was also true of the issue I had with my iBook). This is so disappointing for someone like me who has been a Mac customer since 1988.

I wish I loved it like I used to...
by lyndob ,Jul 11 '06
Pros: tons of storage, stylish, great sound quality, playlist function is awesome
Cons: NOT DURABLE, Updates can be confusing, Check iTunes.com/Support/Discussions for more concerns
I loved my iPod. I got it at Christmas in 2004. I spent hours and hours loading it with my favorite CD's, purchasing music from iTunes, downloading podcasts and even books, and organizing music into playlists. There are many cool features on iTunes, and I never came close to filling even half of my iPod. Oh, the happy days. Sadly one day, my iPod, not wearing any of the protective sleeves I had purchased, slipped off the counter onto the wood floor, and fractured the led screen. There was no recourse, no possible repair unless I wanted to pay $249.00 plus $6.95 shipping and handling, and receive a refurbished iPod I would have to reload with my music. I was very remorseful, but managed to get along "blind" for over a month, until I updated it with a recommended download from iTunes (which was interrupted by many annoying problems) and now it is working (still blind) but my playlists are gone, I have no idea how to get them back and I am wondering what in the world it would take to make me purchase another one. Three words: Don't drop it.

Cons: battery not user replaceable
This IPOD is one of apples most creative and best ideas. It supplies you with loads of music, also. Never skips like a CD player and is compatable with about any new stereo. The itunes application is very updated and very useful when I am on the computer and able to play music on it.

Very good price considering the uses
by projectxbox ,Aug 23 '04
Pros: huge storage space.. great sound, games, data capability
Cons: mirrored unit back collects fingerprints and scratches very easily.. wear silk gloves!!!!
I found myself eyeing this unit after i saw some of the neat things it can do... On top of holding my entire music library of just under 3000 songs, it will hold data files as well, i can even use the ipod as a boot disk for windows!! that is really neat!!! plus the music trivia game built in uses clips of tracks in the units library to test your knowledge of your music library!!

all in all, i like the unit.. with only some minor issues trying to use it on my crappy motherboard..

Ipod Terrible
by aitfanatic ,Jan 12 '05
Pros: Worked great for 44 hours
Cons: Too fragile to be useful
We bought a 20GB Ipod at Best Buy on December 29, 2004. It lasted for exactly 44 hours. It fell from a bed to a carpeted floor, and the screen looked like a spider web. We took it back to Best Buy, and, despite having paid an additional $55.00 for a "Performance Service Plan", Best Buy refused to replace it. They did offer to refund what we paid for the service contract, but would not fix the broken Ipod. We then went to an Apple store, and they also refused to exchange it, or reduce the price if I bought another one. I was terribly disappointed in both Best Buy and Apple. It is obvious to me that the product is extremely fragile, and will not perform in anything other than a sterile, padded environment. Apple would have you believe that you can use it anywhere, but I found that even a minor jolt totally destroyed it. I am considering a class action lawsuit against Best Buy and Apple. Based on other reviews I have read, my experience was not unusual.

Cons: expensive
its great, i use it in the car (connected via aux input) and listen to all my tunes, have it randomize specific genre's, whatever, its wonderful, it is a bit overpriced, but i found a way around that, hit up www.iwantfreestuff.info for how i was able to get it for absolutely nothing, it explains it all nice and clearly.

The Amazing Apple Ipod
by abiland2000 ,Oct 09 '04
Pros: looks great, sounds great, works fine, great click wheel, no problems,
Cons: the ipod scratches very easily.
When I first heard about the ipod I was like what a load of rubbish. But after researching and researching I decided to buy it. After about 4 months of saving up I bought it. It looks great and plays music fine. Itunes works fine at the beginning its a bit tricky but you get used to it quickly. I also had a few problems not being able to disconnect but it works fine now. Unfortunately for 1 month that I had the ipod I couldn't use it this was because it sratches easily and I didn't want to ruin it. Finally iskins came out and over the last 2 days I've been using it non stop. Definately buy it.

iPod locking up
by dallastuan ,Oct 30 '04
Pros: Great overall (if my described situation can be resolved).
Cons: Needs better clip to take to the gym. iSkin is great but the clip sucks.
I've had my 4th gen iPod for a bout two months now. I have 2,584 songs on it (5,000 song capacity). It seems the more songs I add, the more often the iPod locks up. I looked in the manual to try the trouble shooting instructions. No luck. Sent it back to Best Buy who is sending it off for three weeks.

Pros: Almost everything!
Cons: Case scratches way too easily!
I have used this for about 2 weeks now. It's a great little MP3 player and have just one complaint - the cover scratches really easily. Other than that, the software to d/l your songs is pretty good, audio quality is good and the storage capacity is awesome (not to mention the 40GB model!).

Lots of bad ones out there?
by ed18966yahoo ,Oct 07 '04
Pros: Don't know - we never really got to use it.
Cons: Quality concerns.
Ours lasted about an hour before the hard drive started making horrible sounds. When we went to get a replacement, the store (Best Buy) had pulled their entire stock because they had gotten a batch of defective units. Other local stores were also out, apparently for the same reason.

Pros: sweet device, tons of storage.
Cons: $49 bux for a support call? Are they crazy?

Batteries DIE
by nantucketbob ,Jul 25 '05
Pros: It is a nice toy. Certainly is popular.
Cons: Don't become too loyal. Eventually you will be burned.
Batteries needed to be replaced AGAIN for a mere $69.00 plus shipping out there. It only took 8 weeks to get the iPod back again. My advice is to consider only those MP3 players with user-replaceable batteries.
