  • A light whiskey with a soft flavor

    Aug 20, 2005 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Inexpensive, not harsh, simple flavor
Cons: Not enough flavor for me

Summary: In the world of whiskeys you have harsh whiskeys, which have a lot of flavor and spirit, and then you have soft whiskeys, which tend to have a bit less flavor to them, which makes them a bit less exciting. This is definitely one of those whiskeys with ... read more

  • New 1.75 liter design has made me switch brands

    Mar 6, 2010 by
    Not yet rated.
Pros: This new design has no pros.
Cons: Why fix what was not broken?

Summary: What moron designed this new bottle? I, like a few other of your ex-customers, have arthritis and this bottle is most uncomfortable to use. So, have switched to another brand that is easier to handle. If you decide to switch back the bottle, I will ... read more

  • I don't think "quivering anus" is descriptive enough

    Dec 7, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: Automatic ego depressant
Cons: If you have a shot, you're done

Summary: If you are out at a bar, and one of your friends thinks he is "the man" when it comes to drinking, then I know exactly what to do. Go over to him, and start praising his superior drinking ability. Tell him that he has a belly like a steel ... read more

  • Light Whisky For the Newbie

    Aug 3, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Easy to drink, very light, non-aggresive
Cons: Too light for real drinkers

Summary: Black Velvet is another of the popular Canadian whiskies which continue to gain popularity in the U.S. Like its fellow Canadian-offerings, Black Velvet's appeal comes from its light taste and smooth sippability, which stands in stark contrast to hash ... read more

  • Life is too short for mediocre booze

    May 29, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: low price
    Cons: poor flavor, rather harsh

Summary: When I think of Black Velvet, I think of the big 1.75 liter bottle... the plastic one which advertises the wonder of the new shatterproof packaging. To me, this is not the mark of a classy drink, inspiring images of drunken stupor, falling on the ground ... read more

  • Smooth Velvet

    May 17, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: smooth, no aftertaste, smells good
    Cons: none

Summary: Black Velvet Whiskey: 80 Percent proof I am not a big drinker, but if I do have a drink I got to have my Black Velvet. One of the only whiskeys I can stand the taste and the smell of. Black Velvet is ... read more

  • Velvet -For - Ever!

Pros: Smooth, with character and virtually no after taste.
Cons: Plastic bottles give the wrong impresion!

Summary: Found Black velvet many summers ago when visiting the races in Saratoga Springs, NY. A long night on the lake, a new Bayliner at anchor, a pocket full of winnings, a gibbons moon, and the "Velvet". Oh why Oh why couldn't the big guy upstairs ... read more

  • Good Whiskey

Pros: Good Stuff, can be bought in bulk and on sale often.
    Cons: none

Summary: I bought at least 3 - 1.75 liter bottles of Black Velvet on sale back in 2009 for my vacation & days off work. It's a good whiskey, can be used as a mixer or even strait up on the rocks. I like to drink it with freshly brewed iced tea. My recipe for ... read more

  • Black as night, velvety as an Elvis painting

    Sep 16, 2009 by
    Not rated yet
Pros: Price (it shouldn't leave you living and drinking in a van by the river).
Cons: I have tasted far better (but at what price?).

Summary: Not bad for the price.  I see what the other reviews meant when they said it tastes rather like licking the bottome of an oak barrell (although I am not exactly sure what THAT is like).  Still, buy some ginger ale and you have yourself a cheap ... read more

  • Not Good

    Nov 24, 2008 by

Pros: Very inexpensive, Lighter, high alcohol content.
Cons: Flavor very woody, tastes like old oak barrel.

Summary: I frequent whisky as a weekend hobby...seriously. I find Black Velvet to be too much like licking the bottom of an oak barrel by itself and on the rocks. I made a few mixes with soda and experimented on complimenting the natural woodiness. I ... read more
