Digitally 'Rebellious' and loving it!

by theuerkorn theuerkorn is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Mar 09 '04
Pros: Best camera for the price, quality, well balanced, hack enables mirror lockup & FEC
Cons: still pricey, somewhat bulky, visible noise over ISO 400, no LCD preview
As an early adopter to the failed attempt to shift the photo world away from 35mm to a more 'user-friendly' APS (a.k.a. Advantix), I finally was faced with an SLR that, as good as it may be, still belongs to an undervalued minority. After 5 years of good ...

Pros: Interchangeable lenses, price point, hot shoe, good response
Cons: No movie mode, no digital zoom, no LCD preview, no separate flash exposure adjustment

Cons: buffer and write seem slow. lack of pc sync out port

Pros: Great Value, Excellent Image Quality, Most Versatile Camera, Lower Price than D70
Cons: Slower to start, slower continuous drive shooting than D70

Pros: way better low light sensitivity, flexibility, more shots turn out better
Cons: won't fit in your pocket.

The greatest Digital Camera Ever

by digitalskunk , Nov 11 '03
Pros: Price,Price,Price,PRICE,spects.,lens kit,learning potential, size
Cons: no manual Metering only partial, no LCD guard for LCD, no serious professional spects.
I have owned the Canon 300D for about four months now. I am a mediocre photographer at my university and I take pictures for just about everything (action, portraits, plays, you name it). After shooting with all of these camera's I was going to ...

Pros: Easy to use after reading the manual.
Cons: Flash recharge is slow - Pics are lacking in sharpness sometimes.
I have owned my Canon Digital Rebel 300 D camera for over two years and while I am happy with the results, I must offer a tip to anyone seriously looking to enter the SLR Digital market. Look around! I have three digital SLR's at this point, with my ...

Pro results at an amateur price

by iMacMike , May 28 '04
Pros: Price, exceptional image quality, offers full manual setting.
Cons: None yet... the included lens feels cheaply made.
I recently upgraded from a Canon A70 to the Digital Rebel and what a wonderful SLR. It looks and feels remarkably similar to my Rebel GII and works great with my Quantaray EF lenses, 28-80mm and 90-300mm. The D-Rebels' 1.6 sensor magnification actually ...

Finally, a great digital SLR type camera for the common man

by physician97 , Oct 03 '04
Pros: battery lasts extremely long time, pics are sharp crisp bright, simple to operate
Cons: no compact flash comes with it, I would have liked a bigger screen
This is a really slick little SLR type camera. I read the manual and started to take pictures. We have taken more than a thousand pics with the camera and one of the most amazing things is how well it performs in all light settings. It functions just ...

DSLR on a budget

by yossel63 , Feb 23 '05
Pros: All numbered above.
Cons: No major problems, nothing you can't work around.
The only reason you would choose a Prosumer camera like a Pro 1 or a coolpix 8800 over this is size. When it comes to features and performance it's not even close, the Rebel wins hands down. The only reason you might buy a more expensive SLR (outside ...

Think about it before you purchase this camera

by lickety , Oct 22 '03
Pros: I wouldn't know I only had the camera half a day before it failed.
Cons: Do a search on dpreview.com or google for "error 99" or "err 99"
I purchased this camera a few days ago with the EF-S kit lens. I wish I had read a review like the one I'm posting now before I made the purchase. I took about 30 shots and then received an err 99 message on the LCD. The error 99 message locked the cam ...

Most cost effective for image quality

by josiahdavidson , Feb 04 '04
Pros: Image quality; battery life; autofocus; quick shutter; automatic "depth-of-field" setting
Cons: small buffer; image quality (needs 25MP), viewfinder too small/dark; no spotmeter; no flash comp
For a large format landscape photographer, this thing is pretty amazing. It will give excellent quality prints up to about 6"x9" more easily than I can get from 35mm with drum scan. My previous "toy" camera that had to pay its way was a 35mm all manual ...

Not perfect for such a hype.
by consumeristo ,Feb 24 '05
Pros: Great quality, comes with a good lens, you can keep shooting, battery lasts!
Cons: Poor pictures indoors (with flash) are a real nuissance.
Great camera -under the right light. Photos are good and the color range is really excellent for such a cheap camera.

It is true that the camera flash stinks. It is hard to get a decent photo indoors. So if you plan to use it for parties, family dinners, wedding or other indoor activities, stick with a cheaper budget camera, this one aint for that.

But if you want to shoot your artwork this camera will give you a pretty decent quality figuring you set up proper lighting.

I can say more but this is enough.

by lt166724276100 ,Apr 27 '06
Pros: Ease of use, unbelievably great quality photos.
Cons: No usb cable included, need of a Compact Flash card reader.
We got the Canon Digital Rebel EOS 6.3 Megapixel camera as a gift. we didn't know much about digital photography, but this camera makes it VERY easy.

One does not need to be a good photographer to take great pictures with this camera. Being only our family's second digital camera, I don't think we will be buying another one for a long time.

Great Camera For the Short Term
by asocalfamily ,Jun 27 '07
Pros: Easy to use. Looks and feels like a real SLR
Cons: Malfunctioned after only 3 years of regular normal use. Very heavy compared to new cameras.
I bought mine about 3 years ago and have absolutely loved it until recently. Great entry level SLR digital camera. It came with a lens. It's simple to use and has several different picture taking mode. The download software is also outstanding. Canon makes a solid product. I was also able to use my old SLR lens' which was a factor in buying it.

Last month, I started getting error messages after only taking one or two messages. I went on the Internet and discovered what I thought was a self fix-it solution, but it didn't last more than a day. I took it to an authorized repair shop and was given the bad news: $200 MINIMUM just two fix a shutter problem. I'm not going to have it fixed given the fact digital cameras are cheaper and lighter. I plan on getting the new Canon Digital Rebel XT. I think it's disappointing to only get 3 years out of a product I paid over $900. The camera was never dropped or abused.

Great Starter DSLR
by pleasespamme ,May 30 '05
Pros: Clear, low noise, battery life, easy to use, great manual focus, Included lens
Cons: Wish the included lens was a higher zoom (maybe 300mm), some over exposed pictures
I just got this camera about a week ago. So far I am very pleased. This is my first DSLR. The things that impress me are, Very little shutter lag (virtually none as compared to digital compacts), Speed of auto focus, ease of manual focus, Long battery life, and excellent vibrant pictures with true saturated colors, and almost no digital noise. Below are some pictures I have taken with this camera as well as three or four digital compacts I have owned.

Not quite what you want
by jesseboyd ,Jan 26 '05
Pros: Works with existing EOS lenses and 1.5 magnification with no light loss for telephoto lenses.
Cons: Fragile body, get a better camera, D20 or save 100s buy a point and shoot.
This camera does some cool things like takes my eos lenses and can fire shots almost as fast as my film slr. It's body is fragile and for some reason the photos appear duller and less sharp than my $200 Canon A400. My 540EZ flash only works on manual even tho it is a ttl flash. Download speeds to the computer thru usb 1.0 could be much faster with camera that have usb 2.0. This camera is much to expensive for the minor feature upgrade you get from a simple and much cheaper point and shoot camera. For some reason the blacks tend to really blotch up in shadow areas and I have not found a way to clean that up yet. I want clean, crisp shadows for professional work and hope the D20 has greatly improved this low light NOISE.

Canon Should be Ashamed
by nmclay ,Apr 08 '07
Pros: Incredible image quality, ease of use, price for performance delivered.
Cons: Err99 and non-existant customer service. NEVER AGAIN.
I am a lifelong Canon user who spent the big bucks for a new Canon Rebel XT digital. I have had numerous failures with the now infamous error 99. Canon was NO help and refused to do anything about it and the camera store told me to not use non-canon lenses. OK. I am using the Canon lens that came with the camera. Bloody awful customer support and I refuse to ever be taken again by this poor excuse for a company. I am out over $800. You doubt me? Just do a google search on "err99 Canon rebel" and see the pages and pages of this problem.

All I can say is "wow"
by ag4hq ,Mar 18 '07
Pros: OUTSTANDING, Sports Illustrated quality photos.
Cons: Not as portable as the smaller point and shoot cameras.
I will not waste a lot of bandwidth since this camera has already been reviewed 86 times, but I do want to say this is one awesome camera. I bought this for my wife, who is an amateur photographer, but loves taking pictures. She and I both have used this camera quite a bit, mainly with a 300mm zoom lens attached to take pictures of our teen age son playing soccer. It is quite impressive to come home with Sports Illustrated quality pictures of a high school soccer game!! We actually bought a new and better photo printer to do the pics taken by this camera justice. This has to be one of the finest cameras available.

Cons: A little on the expensive side
This is an amazing camera. Very similar to the 10-D but almost half the price. Same quality.

The pictures are sharp, with 6 megapixels.

I'm not crazy about the lens that came with the camera, but I added on a new lens, and I am in love with this camera.

Digital Rebel - Great camera
by johnmac2 ,Jun 25 '04
Pros: Light, quick and great photos (compared to my old 3MP regular digital camera)
Cons: The buying experience
I researched this product heavily online and concluded it was the best SLR for the money. Happy I bought it - it's great! Light, great pics, easily to handle.

One thing to note is that alot of websites are using fraudulent practices in selling it. I originally bought it from radioactivedeals.com for $599 with the lens. A few days after ordering it someone from radioactivedeals.com called me and said that it does not come with a battery or charger and he would sell me them for and extra $100 or so. I called Canon and they said that the camera comes with those and that radioactivedeals.com must have opened the box and is playing games. Alot of those sites (like A&M Photo World & Digital Liquidators) do the same thing to make the price look better and then they sell you an opened (maybe used?) product. It really costs $900+! Beware!

I love it!!!
by brad1711 ,Apr 24 '05
Pros: Great picture quality, fits my hand like a glove (unlike the tiny 350D)
Cons: flimsy battery door, small buffer,
Aside from the disappointment I had when I opened the box on Christmas morning to find there was no memory card included and that I would have to wait until the next day to use it, this camera has been everything I hoped it could be. I love the wide range of ISOs (100-1600), the different shooting parameters (some are easier to edit, others look better right off the camera), the different White Balances to compensate for different types of light, the compatibility with the EOS lenses I already had, the ability to connect to a television for an instant slide show, and so on...

The only things I dislike about this camera are that the door to the battery housing seems flimsy and I'm always worried I'm going to snap it off and that the buffer only holds 4 frames. This means that in rapid shooting, after you take the first four frames, you have to wait about 1.5 seconds in between each frame. Another thing is that

Matches the performance of my EOS 35mm
by mmayer54 ,Dec 03 '04
Pros: Quick response & excellent image quality
Cons: No mini-file under 1.57 megapixels and power-saver shuts power off a little too soon
After shooting my son's football game with the 300D, I can honestly say there is NO shutter lag, it fires rapidly in 4 shot bursts and the resolution is AWESOME. Only changes I would make:1)Offer a web-friendly mini-file setting (640x480 or 800x600) and 2) Increase the automatic power-saver (shuts down too soon) mode from 1 minute to 3 or 5 minutes. I'm using my Tamron 28-300mmAF from my 35mm EOS.

Great camera!
by misty5081 ,May 15 '06
Pros: The pictures speak for themselves it is a great camera
Cons: i don't like converting color pics to black & white- they're gray
This camera has to be one of the best investments i have made. I bought this camera 3 years ago when it first came out. I bought the camera which came with the lens, a bag, and extra battery, a UV filter and a digital card and spent about $1400! It seems like a lot of money but you get what you pay for! I used the rebel 2000 for years and loved it and still use it for black and white pictures. The digital rebel is not for everyone. It takes a lot of time and practice getting used to the controls. but once you have mastered it you will get a lot of compliments on your photos.

Good digital SLR if available below $600
by gotskiz ,May 01 '05
Pros: Good entry level SLR
Cons: Not a good camera for night/flash photography
Bought this camera in Aug for $822 (cheapest price that time). Overall it is a good camera for someone migrating from digital point-n-shoot to SLR, but definitely has lot of window for improvement. If you can spent a little extra $$, i would definitely recommend going to Nikon.

The serious problem I had was with flash photography. I find the automatic exposure totally inconsistent. At least 1 out of 3 flash photos i have taken have come under exposed - i just don't understand this because how can one go wrong when shooting someone who is just 4 feet away from you, and that too in the "P" mode? In all those occasions, i was able to get a very good picture with my Sony point-n-shoot.

Also, in low light auto exposure has difficulty in locking to object.

Fine camera, quick focusing
by skshaw54 ,Mar 30 '04
Pros: Quick focus, SLR feel, interchangeable lenses, low lag time, picture quality.
Cons: Of minor concern: Weight, White balance adjustment, inadequate flash.
This camera will rarely disappoint. The Canon lenses focus quickly and accurately. As a form Sony 707 user, the reduced lag time and quicker shots are a huge improvement for sports photography. The Sony was much better in low light, in spite of having ISO 400 limit. Sony's low light focusing system is unparalelled but this camera focuses well in most low light situations.

Flash is a bit inadequate and produces too sharp of a zone that is illuminated. With the 440 flash, the results are usually very good, even in near dark. I have found some inconsistency, perhaps due to shooting outside the flash's range.

Enjoy this camera. It can do almost anything you need it to do.

Best digital at under 1000
by mitch10 ,Sep 23 '03
Pros: Great images, great versatility, great speed, GREAT price!
Cons: Sometimes odd metering, kinda bulky.
I've gone through 10 different digital cameras in the last 5 years and have played with many more. I couldn't decide between the Digital Rebel and the upcoming Sony 828 till I saw a few images on a review site at 400 ISO. They were cleaner than what I was currently taking at 100 ISO on my semi-pro 5 mpix camera I had paid the same amount for a little over a year ago. I got what was probably the first one in the city available to the public and haven't regretted it one second! It take great pictures in even low lighting and is easy to handle. Nothing currently on the market comes anywhere close at the price and since the Sony 828 is supposed to at least 200 more (if and when it ever comes out) I am happy with my choice!

This camera has renewed my interest in photography
by twaller98 ,Nov 01 '03
Pros: Affordable digital SLR camera thats fun to use.
Cons: Not easy for a beginner, but great for a student or hobbyist.
I have taken bad to just OK pictures with this camera. I think it has great potential though, I just need some practice. I have only had it a week, and it has taken me that long to figure out 80% of it's functionality. Give me another week, and I will be entering contests with the pictures I take.

I ordered this camera with an additional Cannon 28-200 zoom lens, but the one that comes with it is a good starter. Be sure to get a filter for it though.

My two biggest complaints were that the 128MB memory card I had was filling up too quickly, and the camera has no ability to film movies, as the Cannon Digital ELPH 4.0 I had did. I solved the first one with an IBM 1GB microdrive, and just have had to get over the second.

One more thing, I have ordered an extra battery. It was not because the one it has went too quickly, (it lasted 3 days with the first charge), but because I don't want to miss a thing.

An excellent step into the DSLR World
by chevyiiman ,May 22 '05
Pros: Ability to use any Canon EOS lens RAW Files provide excellent quality Decent AUTO Mode
Cons: Lens Cost $$
As a SLR shooter for many years I fell into the trap of the digital convience with lower-end Point and Shoot Cameras. Although I loved the pros of digital I missed the versatility and quality of my old SLR. So I finally decided to get a DSLR and Canon 300D was the best choice. At the time of purchase it was right before the new model arrived so I got quite a good deal.

The ability to use all of my old Canon Lenses is what mainly attracted me to this camera. I have had excellent results with the camera, and as they always say its not the camera but the photographer who makes good pictures. The Auto mode is perfect for my g/f to use and the full manual mode lets me be creative with the camera.

The Best Choice for an SLR film user
by mfrost9133 ,Dec 12 '04
Pros: very little shutter lag, uses interchangeable lenses, long battery life
Cons: Pictures must be planned through the traditional eyepiece viewer. LCD only for reviewing
Up until I purchased the Canon Digital Rebel I had always used SLR film cameras. It seemed natural to move from the Canon Film Rebel to the Digital Rebel. It was the right decision.

I want to have full manual control of a camera and I am able to use the same lenses which I purchased for the my film camera, with the digital Rebel.

I just returned from a photographic trip where I saw the frustration of people trying to make due with a digital camera that was not SLR. They didn't have nearly the control that I had with a digital SLR.

If you want to transfer your skills from film to digital, this is the way to go.

Great BUY!
by stinkypete ,May 02 '05
Pros: Speed, Image Quality, great battery life!
Cons: Image downloads, Bright Flash
Once i saw that Canon had a Digital SLR for under $1000, I was game. I had been shooting 35mm slr's for years and had a small digital camera. I could not afford the higher end models, but did not want a point and shoot. the 300D fit the bill. Everywhere i went, it was sold out, but got one from Best Buy on sale for $900! In a nutshell, the camera is fast, shoot great photos, had a fast auto zoom and a nice feel. Using the USB cable to transfer photos is like watching paint dry - even with the smallest photo setting. It is dreadfully slow! The camera can become bulky and a pain in the butt after a while, but the included strap makes it s bit easier. I still want a small point and shoot because i cannot carry my 300D with me everywhere.

Finally, the camera I have been waiting for.
by jamesmack ,Nov 09 '03
Pros: Price, Image Quality, No Shutter lag, Inter-changeable lenses
Cons: Size, Should come with a large capacity card. User's manual doesn't explain compatibility of accessories
This is a great camera. It acts mostly like a real ttl 35mm camera. You get an optical viewfinder, interchangeable lenses, great picture quality, virtually no shutter lag and reasonable battery life. The camera body is a bit large, however, but it is very light. The user interface looks way more confusing at first than it really is. I have been very impressed with the image quality, even compared to my 5 mp cameras. For $1000, you get a camera and lens that is just superior to everything else on the market in this price range. I was replacing a Canon S50 that had been stolen. After using this camera, I am pitching all of my other digicams except for the Canon S330.

The easiest - and cheapest - way to get into photography

Pros: Easy to use Relatively inexpensive Compatible with Canon lenses
Cons: PC software isn't particularly good Not as solid as the D-10, but $500 less
I've always had an interest in photography but this never really bloomed until having a digital camera. The point-and-shoot style digital never allowed me to produce the more artistic shots capable from an SLR. This has now all changed with the release of the Canon Rebel, which is a digital camera compatible with all the previous Canon EOS lenses. The camera has served me well in the last six months, and all the problems I've encountered have tended to be caused by my lack of understanding rather than the product itself. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to take the next step to becoming a pro photography. Just make sure your computer is powerful enough to process the large files that it generates!

Canon Digital Rebel - a great camera, and a great price!
by flycyhm ,Nov 12 '03
Pros: Well made, well laid out, feels solid, and looks great. Fast too!
Cons: The pop-up flash sound a little cheap when it pops up...
Really like the feel, and speed of this camera. Shoots very natural for a digital camera, of course I'm used to a Fuji S602, which is much different. You cannot compare the Digital Rebel to a non-SLR digital camera, they are completely different.

If this is to be your first SLR, you will enjoy it, as long as you understand that it is not a point and shoot camera. With a little learning, and practise, you will be shooting like a pro in no time. All you need is to find an interesting subject, and and maybe you'll be selling prints, and doing wedding for friends (like myself)!

This camera completely changed how I view photography, now it's TTL! (through the lens, unlike a regular point and shoot camera be it digital or film) Anyways, it's a great camera, and you won't be dissapointed.

Best digital camera yet!!!
by jrspa5 ,Nov 30 '04
Pros: Lightning fast, affordable DSLR, beautiful photos, can't beat that combination.
Cons: To get the FULL DSLR experience you must spend $$. Extra lens, flash, & Memory.
Pictures are UNBELIEVABLE!!! With the right photo printer you can print photos that will blow people away!!! The camera's design is awesome too (in my opinion). All of its settings and buttons are placed perfectly. The camera is lightning fast when it comes to snapping photos, especially outdoors.

Everyone swoons over this camera
by myopinion38 ,Jan 04 '04
Pros: Burst shooting, long battery life, megapixels!
Cons: Burst shooting not available in all modes
This is a SWEET camera. I have been waiting to upgrade my first digital (Kodak DC-290) and I am so glad I waited for an SLR under $1000. This camera is awesome. I have never seen a camera swoon the crowd as this one does. The burst shooting has allowed me to get so many awesome photos I NEVER would have gotten otherwise. This is SO powerful. The battery life is incredible. I can't say enough.

Great camera to get into semi-pro photography
by serdar_tufekci ,Mar 09 '05
Pros: Affordable price for a professional camera, great camera, great pictures
Cons: size and cost (but this is standard for any SLR)
I hired a professional to take maternity pictures of my wife, which came out to be great. I found out that he used a digital rebel, which I immediately purchased again. I am still learning how to use the manual controls, but already took some great photos of my newborn daughter which would not have been possible with any point-and-shoot type of camera. It's "auto" mode is great if you don't want to deal with the manual controls. Obviously the only problem is the size (and may be the cost). But if you want great pictures, you have to have an SLR. The digital rebel is a great camera at a very affordable price.

Great value - but ditch the included lense
by johnswords ,Mar 27 '05
Pros: SLR flexibility and quality at digital point-and-shoot price.
Cons: The included lense not very good.
I now have the Canon EOS Digital 20D after having the 300D / Rebel for about six months. There is no doubt that this is the best value in a digital SLR for less than $1,000. If you have more than $1,000, look at the 20D or the 1Ds.

This is basically a consumer version of the retired Canon 10D. What you don't get in the Digital Rebel is metal (rigid) construction and extra shooting functions that most consumers would never miss.

The only piece of advice I have for anyone looking at the Rebel is to buy a better lense. The included 18-55mm lense is the most limiting feature of this camera bundle. Spend a few hundred dollars on either a Canon L series, or an aftermarket Sigma or Tamron lense.

I'm amazed!
by barbienut ,Nov 21 '03
Pros: Awesome pictures, easy to use. Camera firmware is upgradeable.
Cons: No memory card included in package
I read every available review before purchasing this camera. I knew it was good, but didn't know how good until I got it in my hands. I've been using Olympus digitals for about 5 years and have been very happy with their cameras. My most recent was the C-50.

The camera does have some weight to it, but it works to your advantage because there is less shaking when taking pictures. Also, you HAVE to look through the viewfinder to compose your shot-not the LCD screen. You can take 4 consecutive pictures w/o any delay, love that for action shots. The first time the flash popped up scared me, but you get used to it.

I have yet to find anything wrong with this camera. The controls are easy to navigate, menu is easy to see.

I've used both an HP 5550 and an Epson 825 to print the shots. The software included with the camera is pretty good. I especially like using Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.

My only complaint is that the camera does not come with a memory card, so be sure to add that on top of the cost for the camera.

Problems with Exposure and Compatibility
by jdarling2k ,Aug 12 '04
Pros: Intuitive to use. Well-built mechanically.
Cons: Flash problems make the Digital Rebel unusable for professionals.
My Digital Rebel produces badly underexposed photos, inconsistently so, when used in conjunction with an expensive Canon 380EX external flash --- which is supposed to be a compatible device. At Canon's Irvine service center, a pair of wedding photographers shared a similar story . . . same camera, but with the newer, and even more expensive 550EX flash.
Three trips to the service center have yielded no fix. The counter help have refused to conduct a simple test to duplicate the problem. Considering these exposure problems and the hassle in getting them resolved, I feel I have wasted my money on this camera.

Really cool camera, great photo learning tool
by jason_a_a ,Dec 11 '03
Pros: fully automatic to fully manuel controls, great for learners and pros
Cons: pictures are slightly pixelated at higher ISOs in the unfocused areas
feels like a real camera, has a solid feel to it. the body is plastic but has a good feel to it. easily attaches to other ef lenses (and there are alot of better lenses out there then the one that comes with the body) the lens that comes with the body is a nice all purpose lens and will get you through alot of situations. battery lasts a long time around 700 pictures. great ability to go from fully automatic to fully manuel. i have taken some awsome pictures of the moon with this camera. this is a great camera to learn photography on and a great one for someone who knows photography and wants to go digital without the high SLR price tag. one problem is that unfocused areas in the pictures will be a little pixelated at higher ISOs.

Awesome Camera
by pisenberg ,Oct 28 '04
Pros: Durable, easy to operate, great photos!
Cons: None . . . I love my camera !!
I upgraded to the Digital Rebel from a Rebel Ti in preparation for a photo trip to Southern Utah/Northern Arizona. Little did I know this camera would not only perform above and beyond my expectations, but it also gets the high durability award. About halfway into the trip, I was standing on a wall at an overlook determining the composition of my photo, when I suddenly lost my footing and tumbled backwards. My tripod went one direction and my camera flew in another direction about 3 feet onto the rocky ground. My body took the brunt of the fall with lots of bruises to show for it. BUT my Digital Rebel was fine. One minor scratch on the zoom button and that is it. No other scratches or dings. AND it continues to work flawlessly. I give Canon the big thumbs up for making a great little very durable camera.

This camera is awesome! Love the quality of the photos!
by kimmartin ,Oct 11 '04
Pros: Great photos, easy to use, amateur friendly with professional results.
Cons: Haven't really found any yet.
I am not a professional photographer by any means, but I do enjoy good quality photos and I wasn't happy with the point and shoot type of cameras. I wanted the quality of my old 35mm film SLR camera but I didn't want to give up the positive aspects of digital photography. Even though I don't take advantage of all the functionality and I leave this camera on automatic mode most of the time, it takes absolutely beautiful photos and it is very easy for those of us who don't really know what f-stops and aperture mean! And you can't beat the price.

Great Camera!
by reklaw33 ,Jan 04 '04
Pros: Ease of use, Quality of pictures, has all the bells and whistles, Good price.
Cons: A little bulky
The Rebel “D” is by far the best digital camera I have seen for the price. I paid $949 and it came with an 18mm to 55mm zoom that is great! The ease of operation is so simple my wife was taking great pictures in minutes. All she wanted was a point and shoot, but after she saw the pictures of our son playing soccer she was won over. This is a great camera for the whole family!

Love it so far
by scoop_returns ,Feb 26 '05
Pros: Easy to use--very similar to Rebel film cameras. Excellent photo quality
Cons: be sure to buy a new flash that is compatible with Canon Digital
I've only had this camera about three weeks now, but, as a newspaper sports editor,I use it just about every day (50-100 shots, at least). So far I love it. I recently switched from the Rebel 2000--another fine camera from Canon--so I was pretty familiar with the operation already. The pictures come out great, and I love the creative control that I have with digital. The only problem I've had with it is that it is not compatible with my existing flash--another $200 spent. The camera will not work with earlier speed lights or other flashes designed for Canon film cameras.

How did you SLR users ever do it?
by anthony1970 ,Aug 08 '04
Pros: Price, balanced, fairly easy to use after some reading.
Cons: No LCD preview, could come with a cleaning kit. Deceptive LCD image quality.
I'm very pleased with the purchase of my new Rebel and look forward to many years of taking great shots. I have had some unfortunate outings with this camera due more to the lens I was using then the camera, however, I wish the LCD was more accurate. Let me explain, I was using a 500mm manual focus lens out in the field where I was shooting Geese, Deer, Great Blue Herrings and Humming birds all of which were being rather cooperative for once. Every so often I would check the last few pictures I had taken so I could weed out the less than perfect ones making room for better ones, they looked fantastic and I couldn't wait to get home to see them on the computer. Much to my dismay they were for the most part out of focus and or over or under exposed. Point being, the LCD does not give you an accurate view of what you have just taken. Other than that though I have been very pleased with this camera and would recommend it to anyone who is serious about photography.

Broken Auto Focus - Watch Out
by pikesan ,Sep 24 '08
Pros: Worked great until the autofocus produced pictures that were 75% black.
Cons: Cost $200 to repair a camera that's now only worth about $250.

My camera is broken and this well known design problem will not be repaired for free by Canon. Search for "Canon EOS 300d sub mirror repair" in google to find all the documentation. There are several websites that show how to repair the problem yet Canon does not acknowlege the design flaw and repair it for free.

If this were NOT a design problem, why would so many people have the exact same problem? Would someone take the time to document how to repair the camera so precisely take the time to do that if he was the only person with the problem? No way!

By the way, the repair looks tough. I didn't want to try it, even though the directions look complete.

Great for the serious photographer!
by bechandra ,Dec 16 '03
Pros: Great resolution. Easy handling. Full spectrum of settings.
Cons: Must purchase a media card.
This digital SLR is a winner. It has the weight and feel of a solid camera and, if you are willing to take the time to study the manual, you will find all the bells and whistles of its mechanical counterpart.

I bought this camera because I am beginning my own photography business, and, it is just what I needed. It provides great clarity, is easy to carry, and because it looks so much like a standard camera, my clients sit up and pose!

Good except for Flash
by cappywh ,Dec 30 '03
Pros: Fast - Light-weight -Interchangeable Lenses -
Cons: POOR FLASH EXPOSURE (underexposed) Reduced Feature Set for Flash Compensation, Default Parameter Settings
I have a G1 now and was very excited about this camera until I started shooting with the flash, but the built in and my external Canon 420ex. 75% of my flash photos are underexposed and I have been trying to resolve this for weeks. At this price, a camera should be able to properly expose a flash photo. Read the 300d Rebel Forums before you buy if you are at all concerned with the quality of the flash photos... I am returning mine asap..

What a camera!
by drewvan ,Dec 28 '03
Pros: Excellent quality, interchangeable lenses, very user-friendly, 1600 ISO, great price (compared to other digital SLRs).
Cons: Price (compared to the all-in-one cameras), not quite as versatile as more expensive digital SLRs.
I did a TON of research before buying and tried as hard as I could to find a $500 - $800 camera that would do the job but they're just not there yet. I wanted a camera with a fast lens, high ISO, good zoom, at least 4 megapixels. I take a lot of photos of high school basketball games and there just wasn't anything else out there that would do the job for me. I bit the bullet and spent the extra money for a Digital Rebel, a nice 80-300mm lens, and a half gig fast memory card and have been thrilled with the results.

Flash Problems with the Canon 300D
by yoinas ,Oct 07 '04
Pros: OK for outdoor and non flash shooting.
Cons: Flash produces underexposed images.
You would think that a $1000.00 Canon EOS Rebel 300D digital camera would take correctly exposed flash photos. When I bought this camera last January 2004, I expected perfection in all areas of exposure. What I got was a camera that underexposes very badly with built in flash and external flash. I tried all the controls to correct this underexposure with flash and have not found one that consistently gives me perfect exposures. I have to retouch practically every flash image I take by increasing the brightness and correcting the color balance in my Corel Photo Paint program.

Even images taken 10 feet away will not be consistent. One will be OK, and the next one will be badly underexposed even if I give the camera plenty of time to recycle.

Has anyone found anyway to correct this problem? Please let me know.

MAJOR quality control problems. Search web for 'Rebel ERR 99"
by rmsturm ,May 21 '04
Pros: Great camera. Fun to use. Does everything I want in a 35 mm camera.
Cons: MAJOR quality control problems with manufacturing and with firmware in the camera. Check the web!!
I just returned my Digital Rebel for a full refund because of the ERR 99 problem with my Sigma 28-300 zoom lens. Yes, I am sending the lens back to Sigma to have it rechipped for the Digital Rebel. After I got this problem, I went to the web and did a search on “Rebel ERR 99”. There are pages of ERR 99 errors about this camera, many with 100% Canon equipment. Apparently, Canon has very POOR quality control on the manufacturing process and the firmware on the chip in the camera has a problem. It was very disappointing returning the camera because it does everything I want in a 35 mm camera. It was fun shooting with it. However, the camera will fail in bright daylight when shooting at f16 or higher with an ISO setting of 100 or after a large number of shots. I will watch the web. When the reviews show that Canon fixed their QC problem, I will get this camera. I've used a Canon film Rebel for over 10 years with no problems.

Pros: Image quality, price, value
Cons: Placticy, cheap kit lens
This a good camera for the price, the picture quality is fantastic, the same as the more expensive 10D. It's more of a beginners camera though, with features more like a point and shoot as opposed to a real professional SLR.

Cons: Glad I had a leftover memory card ;-)

Superb D-SLR for the $, Great Images, Great Looks!
by juliusma ,Dec 25 '03
Pros: For the money, it's hard to beat! Great images and great looks!
Cons: Could use faster burst rate and more fps.
This is a SUPER value for a D-SLR. The CMOS 6.3MP, Digic processor, interchangeable lenses, among other things makes this a great buy. I got mine for $940 (+ CA tax) with the 18-55mm lens (28-90mm in 35mm terms) and have had it for about 2 weeks. I also purchased at the same time 2 Sigma lenses: 28-70mm f/2.8-4.0 and 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 APO Macro, as well as the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens. So with these 4 lenses (total) I think the bases are generally covered for me and I couldn't be more pleased with the pictures I have taken. Get a large CF card (I use two - 1GB cards), a tripod (3.2 lbs, 61" max height), and a good photo bag (I use a Canon photo backpack - excellent pack for the money!). I also use Hoya filters (UV and circular pol.) for cleaner/clearer shots - still great images without them though! [jojo@DSUonline.org]

Cons: Pretty expensive Plastic construction could be less durable
Just took this camera to italy and filled up two 512mb cards in 2 weeks. The cameras automatic modes are excellent, but i prefer shooting in the manual modes-- especially since those are the modes where you can select the focus point. Images are flawless. This is a great camera.

My son

Pros: picture quality
Cons: too bulky, damaged easily, repair unfairly priced.
My son purchased this camera before his graduation but it never made it past three months. The representative was very rude so out of spite my son refuses to send it to them. I have borrowed his camera but didn't keep it very long because it's too bulky. We travel a lot and we prefer something smaller. The pictures were amazing although we only had twenty out of more than sixty pictures taken. He has purchased a Nikon but I've yet to get my hands on it but I will update when I do!

Great camera, focus system is frustrating
by musky-hunter ,Oct 09 '06
Pros: Great versatility, good images.
Cons: frustrating focus system
My wife and I replace our Sony P&S digital with the Canon SLR primarily because of the annoying shutter lag on the Sony that was causing us to blow many of the photos of our young child when he would move. I used to have an AE-1 program that I really enjoyed so I went for its digital replacement. I like the camera but I am very frustrated with its focusing logic. It doesn't appear to always pick the closest or furthest or even middle point of the subject(s) when it selects a point to focus. I find that more often then not when shooting portraits that I have to manually select the focal point. This is a pain with a small child that is always on the move. I like the standard package lens for the most part but I would suggest also getting the 50mm 1.8 lens for indoor use. I find that I rarely have to fill with flash due to it opening all the way to 1.8.

there has been alot of complaints abt under-exposure but I've learnt to adapt so its been of indifference.

Rebate will not work
by bittercanon ,Jan 11 '05
Pros: Nice camera
Cons: Rebate scam
Beware of the current $100 mail in rebate on this camera. It will NOT be paid. I followed the mail in rebate instructions to the letter (which involves mailing in about 8 separate items) and the claim was rejected due to "missing requirements". I have since spoken to a few other people who also had their rebates rejected. The rebate processing center has no contact information so there is no way to contest this.

If you are doing a price comparison, just be sure you DO NOT take the "rebate" in to consideration.
