Great value - but ditch the included lense
by johnswords ,Mar 27 '05
Pros: SLR flexibility and quality at digital point-and-shoot price.
Cons: The included lense not very good.
I now have the Canon EOS Digital 20D after having the 300D / Rebel for about six months. There is no doubt that this is the best value in a digital SLR for less than $1,000. If you have more than $1,000, look at the 20D or the 1Ds.

This is basically a consumer version of the retired Canon 10D. What you don't get in the Digital Rebel is metal (rigid) construction and extra shooting functions that most consumers would never miss.

The only piece of advice I have for anyone looking at the Rebel is to buy a better lense. The included 18-55mm lense is the most limiting feature of this camera bundle. Spend a few hundred dollars on either a Canon L series, or an aftermarket Sigma or Tamron lense.

by alsplace1701 ,May 22 '06
Pros: Light, easy to use, value for money.
Cons: The EFS lense doesnt fit older canons...
I have ahad my EOS300D for a little over a year and have had nothing but great shot after great shot from it. I have an EOS640 film SLR so all my lenses and converters and flash etc. all fit the digital, what a bonus.

I'm amazed!
by barbienut ,Nov 21 '03
Pros: Awesome pictures, easy to use. Camera firmware is upgradeable.
Cons: No memory card included in package
I read every available review before purchasing this camera. I knew it was good, but didn't know how good until I got it in my hands. I've been using Olympus digitals for about 5 years and have been very happy with their cameras. My most recent was the C-50.

The camera does have some weight to it, but it works to your advantage because there is less shaking when taking pictures. Also, you HAVE to look through the viewfinder to compose your shot-not the LCD screen. You can take 4 consecutive pictures w/o any delay, love that for action shots. The first time the flash popped up scared me, but you get used to it.

I have yet to find anything wrong with this camera. The controls are easy to navigate, menu is easy to see.

I've used both an HP 5550 and an Epson 825 to print the shots. The software included with the camera is pretty good. I especially like using Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.

My only complaint is that the camera does not come with a memory card, so be sure to add that on top of the cost for the camera.

Problems with Exposure and Compatibility
by jdarling2k ,Aug 12 '04
Pros: Intuitive to use. Well-built mechanically.
Cons: Flash problems make the Digital Rebel unusable for professionals.
My Digital Rebel produces badly underexposed photos, inconsistently so, when used in conjunction with an expensive Canon 380EX external flash --- which is supposed to be a compatible device. At Canon's Irvine service center, a pair of wedding photographers shared a similar story . . . same camera, but with the newer, and even more expensive 550EX flash.
Three trips to the service center have yielded no fix. The counter help have refused to conduct a simple test to duplicate the problem. Considering these exposure problems and the hassle in getting them resolved, I feel I have wasted my money on this camera.

Really cool camera, great photo learning tool
by jason_a_a ,Dec 11 '03
Pros: fully automatic to fully manuel controls, great for learners and pros
Cons: pictures are slightly pixelated at higher ISOs in the unfocused areas
feels like a real camera, has a solid feel to it. the body is plastic but has a good feel to it. easily attaches to other ef lenses (and there are alot of better lenses out there then the one that comes with the body) the lens that comes with the body is a nice all purpose lens and will get you through alot of situations. battery lasts a long time around 700 pictures. great ability to go from fully automatic to fully manuel. i have taken some awsome pictures of the moon with this camera. this is a great camera to learn photography on and a great one for someone who knows photography and wants to go digital without the high SLR price tag. one problem is that unfocused areas in the pictures will be a little pixelated at higher ISOs.

BEST for LESS
by silversweet6 ,Dec 16 '03
Pros: Picture quality, battery life, ease of use, endless potential to learn experiment for beginners
Cons: No memory card included in package and is slightly bulky
This is by far the best digital SLR camera for under 1000. Although a professional photographer has endless tools to their skills, this camera also creates unlimmited options for the photographing amatuer.

Awesome Camera
by pisenberg ,Oct 28 '04
Pros: Durable, easy to operate, great photos!
Cons: None . . . I love my camera !!
I upgraded to the Digital Rebel from a Rebel Ti in preparation for a photo trip to Southern Utah/Northern Arizona. Little did I know this camera would not only perform above and beyond my expectations, but it also gets the high durability award. About halfway into the trip, I was standing on a wall at an overlook determining the composition of my photo, when I suddenly lost my footing and tumbled backwards. My tripod went one direction and my camera flew in another direction about 3 feet onto the rocky ground. My body took the brunt of the fall with lots of bruises to show for it. BUT my Digital Rebel was fine. One minor scratch on the zoom button and that is it. No other scratches or dings. AND it continues to work flawlessly. I give Canon the big thumbs up for making a great little very durable camera.

This camera is awesome! Love the quality of the photos!
by kimmartin ,Oct 11 '04
Pros: Great photos, easy to use, amateur friendly with professional results.
Cons: Haven't really found any yet.
I am not a professional photographer by any means, but I do enjoy good quality photos and I wasn't happy with the point and shoot type of cameras. I wanted the quality of my old 35mm film SLR camera but I didn't want to give up the positive aspects of digital photography. Even though I don't take advantage of all the functionality and I leave this camera on automatic mode most of the time, it takes absolutely beautiful photos and it is very easy for those of us who don't really know what f-stops and aperture mean! And you can't beat the price.

Great Camera!
by reklaw33 ,Jan 04 '04
Pros: Ease of use, Quality of pictures, has all the bells and whistles, Good price.
Cons: A little bulky
The Rebel “D” is by far the best digital camera I have seen for the price. I paid $949 and it came with an 18mm to 55mm zoom that is great! The ease of operation is so simple my wife was taking great pictures in minutes. All she wanted was a point and shoot, but after she saw the pictures of our son playing soccer she was won over. This is a great camera for the whole family!

Love it so far
by scoop_returns ,Feb 26 '05
Pros: Easy to use--very similar to Rebel film cameras. Excellent photo quality
Cons: be sure to buy a new flash that is compatible with Canon Digital
I've only had this camera about three weeks now, but, as a newspaper sports editor,I use it just about every day (50-100 shots, at least). So far I love it. I recently switched from the Rebel 2000--another fine camera from Canon--so I was pretty familiar with the operation already. The pictures come out great, and I love the creative control that I have with digital. The only problem I've had with it is that it is not compatible with my existing flash--another $200 spent. The camera will not work with earlier speed lights or other flashes designed for Canon film cameras.

How did you SLR users ever do it?
by anthony1970 ,Aug 08 '04
Pros: Price, balanced, fairly easy to use after some reading.
Cons: No LCD preview, could come with a cleaning kit. Deceptive LCD image quality.
I'm very pleased with the purchase of my new Rebel and look forward to many years of taking great shots. I have had some unfortunate outings with this camera due more to the lens I was using then the camera, however, I wish the LCD was more accurate. Let me explain, I was using a 500mm manual focus lens out in the field where I was shooting Geese, Deer, Great Blue Herrings and Humming birds all of which were being rather cooperative for once. Every so often I would check the last few pictures I had taken so I could weed out the less than perfect ones making room for better ones, they looked fantastic and I couldn't wait to get home to see them on the computer. Much to my dismay they were for the most part out of focus and or over or under exposed. Point being, the LCD does not give you an accurate view of what you have just taken. Other than that though I have been very pleased with this camera and would recommend it to anyone who is serious about photography.

Broken Auto Focus - Watch Out
by pikesan ,Sep 24 '08
Pros: Worked great until the autofocus produced pictures that were 75% black.
Cons: Cost $200 to repair a camera that's now only worth about $250.

My camera is broken and this well known design problem will not be repaired for free by Canon. Search for "Canon EOS 300d sub mirror repair" in google to find all the documentation. There are several websites that show how to repair the problem yet Canon does not acknowlege the design flaw and repair it for free.

If this were NOT a design problem, why would so many people have the exact same problem? Would someone take the time to document how to repair the camera so precisely take the time to do that if he was the only person with the problem? No way!

By the way, the repair looks tough. I didn't want to try it, even though the directions look complete.

Great for the serious photographer!
by bechandra ,Dec 16 '03
Pros: Great resolution. Easy handling. Full spectrum of settings.
Cons: Must purchase a media card.
This digital SLR is a winner. It has the weight and feel of a solid camera and, if you are willing to take the time to study the manual, you will find all the bells and whistles of its mechanical counterpart.

I bought this camera because I am beginning my own photography business, and, it is just what I needed. It provides great clarity, is easy to carry, and because it looks so much like a standard camera, my clients sit up and pose!

Good except for Flash
by cappywh ,Dec 30 '03
Pros: Fast - Light-weight -Interchangeable Lenses -
Cons: POOR FLASH EXPOSURE (underexposed) Reduced Feature Set for Flash Compensation, Default Parameter Settings
I have a G1 now and was very excited about this camera until I started shooting with the flash, but the built in and my external Canon 420ex. 75% of my flash photos are underexposed and I have been trying to resolve this for weeks. At this price, a camera should be able to properly expose a flash photo. Read the 300d Rebel Forums before you buy if you are at all concerned with the quality of the flash photos... I am returning mine asap..
