A last minute addition that has proven to be a great asset

by ncphototrekker ncphototrekker is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Electronics, , Mar 05 '08
Pros: Typical Canon "L" build quality...excellent. Silent AF, constant aperture, internal focusing.
Cons: The only negative is there is no hyperfocal scale.
I’ll be honest here…this was not a lens that I had intentionally wanted to purchase. When I was selecting my lenses for a new Canon outfit, I had the ranges from 10-22mm and 24-70mm covered. I wasn’t all that concerned with the gap ...

Yes....I finally got my wide angle

by jedi29 , Feb 28 '05
Pros: Sharp, well made, important focal length on smaller sensor Canon dSLR
Cons: Price, bulky hood, 1.6 crop factor robs its ultra wide magic
This is one of Canon's entry-level professional grades L series lens. The word entry level is usually associated with something affordable. Well in the Canon SLR world an affordable "L" means 700 bucks. A lot of cash for an enthusiastic hobbyist and I ...

the cheaper (not lesser) canon wide angle zoom

by wilco42 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, May 25 '04
Pros: excellent image quality, solid construction, constant maximum aperture through zoom range
Cons: the 17-40mm f/4L may be a little too slow for some
Anyone looking for a wide angle zoom for their Canon body only has a few choices available to them. There is the cheap (EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 for ~$350), the not so cheap (EF 17-40mm f/4L for ~$700) and the uber expensive (EF 16-35mm f/2.8 for ~$1400). ...

A "must have" for lovers of (Canon) wide-angle lenses!

by fashfoto Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Dec 05 '03
Pros: An ultra wide-angle zoom lens, well constructed, reasonably priced, yielding great image quality…
Cons: Well, $700 is $700, reasonable or not!
Back in the sixties (well before many of you may have been born), a number of top photographers like Horn and Griner (Steve Horn, Norm Griner), Bert Stern, Francesco Scavullo, Melvin Sokolsky, and Otto Storch were shooting fashion and illustration photos ...

My Favorite Landscape Lens

by andgott , Mar 28 '08
Pros: Sharp optics. Great build quality. Good range.
Cons: Heavy. Expensive. Massive hood. No Image Stabilizer
I was in need of a lens to replace the 'Kit' lens that came with my Rebel XT, and found this lens was the one that fit the bill. I used it, and compared it in the field, to other canon lenses, and decided that this particular lens was what I needed. ...

Starting my dSLR life with Canon 17-40 L lens

by irinette , May 27 '09
Pros: Compact for L lens, sharp, good colors, good built
Cons: no IS, not good for indoors/poor lighting
I have been a Canon enthusiast for years using most of their powershots S, SD, G series. I finally decided to try myself in dSLR photography. So, I purchased Rebel XSi / 450D body and 17-40 f/4 lens. Those are the very first lens I tried (after the kit ...

Good value but I would invest in the 16-35mm f/2.8

by motomille , Jul 13 '05
Pros: Image Quality, Great Value for L series, Not too heavy
Cons: Not a f/2.8
Now hear me out. I know this lens runs around $600 and the 16-35mm f/2.8 is twice that for $1200. First off... if you're shooting with something like a 20D and it's not full frame (1.6x) you're getting a 27-64mm. So going down to 16 for that wide ...

One 'L' of a lens that will not let you down!

by hopetest , Apr 29 '05
Pros: Super sharp, beautiful to use, top quality, weather sealed
Cons: Need a bigger back for the lenshood! Nothing else, this is a GREAT lens!
I recently upgraded my digital camera to the Canon 20D and decided I could not insult it by plonking my Sigma 18-50mm DG lens on the front. Very little point in having an 8.2MP sensor and shoving cheap grade glass in front that doesn't have the resolving ...

Great build quality with sharp results
by tt81156 ,Jan 01 '06
Pros: Great build quality and sharp results
Cons: Sometimes hunts in low-light
This lens has typical L class build quality - weather sealed and a solid feel. This lens is sharp and can produce excellent wide views on a full-frame camera.

The only gripe I have with this lens is it sometimes hunts for focus in low-light situations, my other 70-200 F/4.0L lens does not have the same issue.

If you want to shoot wide scenes then this is a great lens - Here are some sample images produced with the lens.

Get the big picture.
by poprockruss ,Nov 21 '03
Pros: Sharp images. Contrast & color. Solid construction. A handsome piece of equipment. Pride of ownership.
Cons: None. Some may say it's too pricey. It's not.
This is the first prime lens I have owned. Although I have taken only one roll of shots with it, I am very happy with it so far. It is lighter than I thought it would be. It balances well on my Canon ELAN 7. The construction appears to be top notch. Manual focus is ultra smooth. Auto focus is fast and silent. The 17mm setting is extremely wide with little or no obvious distortion. You can capture amazingly wide landscapes. Having a range of 17-40mm, this lens is strictly for wide angle shots, especially when used with a film camera. Used with a digital SLR, you would have a good all-around zoom range of about 25-70mm. Images are tack sharp. Color and contrast are superb. I compared photos taken with this lens to photos taken with a good quality Minolta zoom. Yes, there is a difference. The Minolta photos were nice. The Canon photos are awesome (on the same type of film, I might add).

Perfect for Indoors and Scenery
by camerawizard ,Feb 09 '06
Pros: Solid, sharp, bombproof. Buy it.
Cons: On the heavy side due to solid metal build.
I use this lens on a Rebel XT. This lens is a very, very well built, and solid product. I am very happy with it and recommend it highly. I compared the EF-S zooms with IS and for the same money I have this L series lens with a MUCH nicer build quality and razor sharp glass. It is slightly heavy, which I like, as it makes for easier hand holding. With the cropped digital sensor this lens provides excellent indoor and scenery range of view. There is zero distortion even at wide angles.

In short, you will love this lens.

must have for 1.6x bodies
by rbau ,Jun 15 '06
Pros: -focal length on 1.6x -color and sharpness
Cons: -weight
I tried a 28-70 on my 10D but always ended up frustrated because it was too tight, especially when shooting indoors and in crowds. After a lot of reading and debating I found a used 17-40 for $600 and jumped on it. What a great lens! The first big test was a large anniversary party. It was very easy to squeeze into a crowd and still get great shots of people that were only 3-4 feet away. It is also very useful as a walk-around lens in good light.
