Best. Drive. Ever.

Aug 08 '05 - Updated Sep 20 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Handling, ride quality, engine note, usable rear seat
Cons: Seats could be better, shifts could be smoother, fuel economy
The Bottom Line: An amazing value, especially for sports car buyers who prioritize handling and require a usable rear seat.

Flying up a tight uphill turn on WV-16 with the RX-8's rotary engine shrieking like a superbike's through 8000 RPM in second, the car sinking ever lower to the road as the lateral g's climbed, it hit me: this is the most amazing car I've ever driven. And ...

The Mazda RX8 A Four Door Sports Coupe

by daumco Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500
Apr 09 '05 - Updated Apr 14 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Generally a good all around sporty vehicle
Cons: A few minor things like lack of color choice, spare tire
The Bottom Line: The automatic should appeal to those not caring much about speed but still want that sports car feeling and looks, while the manual is strictly for sports car purists.

The Question is, will Mazda start a trend with it's new four seat, four door sports car? A LITTLE HISTORY Seventeen years ago Jeep started a automobile revolution when they introduced the four door Jeep Cherokee in the late 80s. ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Exciting Ride, Unsurpassed Handling, Plush Interior, High Redline, Rev-Happy Rotary, 4-door Practicality, Unmistakable Styling, Performance
Cons: Fuel Economy, Limited Headroom, Possible Flooding Issues, Low Torque, So-So Stereo System
The Bottom Line: A car that requires a little extra attention, but well worth it. Mazda really said: "A sports car like no other". It really is. Live. Love. Drive.

Like many, I find myself living in a day in age where there is a completely new genre of crossbred, unlabeled vehicles out there. The line between SUVs and Minivans are starting to blur rather drastically, whilst other categories such as sedans and ...

The rotary legend sings again

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: smooth motor, precise handling, unique styling
Cons: it could use a little more power
The Bottom Line: It's one of the best cars in this price range, the only thing that can compare is the 350z.

Introduction: Well, this comes to my second ever car review. It's been a while since I've owned my Protege, and for what "we" needed at the time it has served it's purpose. But now I'm looking more specifically for a car for myself. To ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Handling, looks, individuality, value
Cons: A few quirks, generally minor. See full review.
The Bottom Line: The best car I've ever owned. So far no problems with it, but I've only had it a few months.

I am completely in love with this car. I won't repeat the well known stuff about the rotary engine and the superb handling and all. I'd just like to address some of the complaints that you sometimes hear about the car, because they were things I ...

I'm having fun!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Driving is just too much fun!; Handling is responsive; Construction of car is solid.
Cons: Gas mileage; Creates incessant need to go fast around corners; Did I mention gas mileage?
The Bottom Line: Buy it if you want to have fun driving. Don't buy it if you are overly concerned about gas costs or need to put a lot in your trunk.

I bought my 2005 Mazda RX-8 from a private party. It was one-year old with about 15,000 miles. It is the Shinka version (6-speed) with every option except the navigation package. I have not subscribed to Sirius satellite radio which the previous ...

Half a year with the RX-8

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Great looks, good performance and balance, practical sports car, 4 seats, fun to drive.
Cons: GAS MILAGE 12MPG in the city, Mazdas service, weak paint, weak torque.
The Bottom Line: With the poor gas mileage I am hard pressed to recommend this car unless the cost of gas means nothing to you.

Here is the real storey on this car warts and all. I have a GT 6 spd. On the plus side this is an excellent performing car. It has very good balance and will not bite you when pushed. Rode manors are also very good with a good quality ride yet ...

Cons: MUST WARM CAR UP BEFORE SHUT OFF!! could flood engine and not under warranty =$$$$!
The Bottom Line: If you do not take care of rotary engine, you will pay for it! It requires TLC or it will be in shop! EXTEND YOUR WARRANTY ITS VERY WORTH IT!!

I purchased a 2005 Mazda rx8 about a month ago. It was purchased from a friend of the family and had about 41,175 miles on it. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAR! The inside and outside style is beautiful, it has a great sound system, great ride, I LOVE the car. ...

Sweet Car

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Cornering, fun to drive, looks, and price tag.
Cons: Burns oil, Warm up time, and people staring.
I love this car. I bought one 3 months ago and it is fun to drive and looks great. I have a black one with the Grand Touring Package and manual transmission. The cars best driving feature is cornering. I have taken 90 degree turns at 50mph and there was room to go higher. Acceleration is good, but could use a little more. Don't plan to drive this car in the snow. I picked it up and there was about a half inch on the ground and I slipped around like crazy. It is a fun car to drive with lots or room compared to the 350z or TT and less expensive.

Be warned: The car is meant to burn oil. You need to check it every 1000 miles if you don't drive it hard, more if you do. It also needs to warm up a bit before you turn it off otherwise you can flood the engine.

Pros: Great handling, cute&fun. Comfortably & safely accommodate carseat without breaking back getting toddler in&out.
Cons: Automatic's manual mode doesn't downshift to first when slowing into full stop, stays second
I was in the market for an Audi TT Quattro Coupe to replace my Audi A4 Quattro. But after driving the RX8, I was hooked: Totally fun, cute, zippy, AND still has a sun-roof! Also, the navigation in the Mazda is better than the Audi's. Fully loaded the RX8 also costs quite a bit less than an even modestly equipped TT (or the BMW 3-series, my other considered car!)

I was upset that in the first month, I went back to the dealership 5 times for something that - although they agreed was a flaw & even had Mazda Reps evaluate & finally a top Mazda engineer - turned out to be a normal operating characteristic. It's okay, because I can downshift myself when it stays in second at a stop; but I just wish they'd known about it the first time I reported it, instead of having to go back so many times.

Still, the dealership was nice enough: made it up to me by putting a 6-disc CD Changer in my car (practically the only upgrade option I didn't already have)!
