Pros: New styling, power with economy, roominess, quiet, composed chassis Cons: Overly light steering, front seats lack lateral support, rear seat doesn't fold, smallish trunk The Bottom Line: Always a large car at a premium price, the Avalon finally has the styling it deserves. Still not a driver's car, but getting there.
That I was able to request a test drive in the new Avalon without surprising the salesman says as much about the car's new-for-2005 styling as my advancing age. The first Avalon was hard to distinguish from the Camry on which it was based. The second, ...

Pros: Spacious interior, good power/mileage, quiet interior, wide door openings, rides like a Buick Cons: acceleration/transmission hesitation, lack of trunk space, poorly written owners manual, shift lever maze puzzle The Bottom Line: This is a basically good car with some excellent features, however, it requires some additional engineering/design work before I would recommend it to a friend
My 2005 Avalon is a nice car by in large, BUT as I've had a chance to drive it for the past 2 months it seems that the designers at Toyota needed a couple of more months on the drawing boards to finish the job. That is they got a lot of things right but ...

Pros: Toyota reputation. Value retention. Quality materials. Powerful engine. Quiet chassis. Neat "toys". Excellent gas mileage. Cons: Some ergonomic issues. Panel gaps. Poor fit on the right side of the instrument panel. The Bottom Line: Overall, a bargain for the price especially when you factor in resale value. A technological marvel better than comparably priced "luxury" cars and 28 MPG to boot!!
01/06 UPDATE: Still a great car, averaging 28 MPG (75% highway). Major design flaw: locating the button for the power rear shade next to the remote trunk release without disabling the trunk release button while the car is in "drive". I tried to raise ...

Pros: Power, space, comfort, brakes, hwympg, auto-dimming mirrors, safety/vehicle stability control; VW Phaeton profile Cons: Hesitant transmission (@low speed); sub-Toyota build quality; too much brake dive; semi-weak upgaded stereo The Bottom Line: The 06's are out, build-quality's likely better. Choosing Avalon is a no-brainer. Want a smaller better-handling car? Infinity G35 or 2006 Lexus IS are truly awesome picks.
Toyota almost hit it out of the park with this one - and I'm a judgemental and overly-critical 37 year-old car-guy w/two young children. I bought it for its interior room, power, high speed poise (@ 80 mph) and safety features, and those are still its ...

Pros: Looks, Ride, Comfort, Finish, "High End" features, 4 sets of air bags, vehicle stability control. Cons: Uncomfortable passenger seat. Non folding rear view mirrors. 91 octane The Bottom Line: Chose the Avalon over a Acura TL, Lexus ES330 & Caddy CTS. No regrets!
I took delivery of an Avalon Limited one week ago. The only option it doesn't have is NAV. I've driven it about 500 mis. & I'm very impressed. First, the subjective. I think that it's an impressive looking car. The color is Blizzard Pearl (white) & ...

Pros: Reliability. Subtle stying that doesn't get old fast. Smooth, comfortable ride. Powerful. Value. Cons: Rear detection system should be an option. See review for many others. The Bottom Line: Toyota will no doubt improve this car, but if you want to the only one around for a while, buy one now.
I have owned a 2005 Toyota Avalon Limited for two months. After getting getting down and dirty with this car, I'm still impressed. Toyota has gotten three customer feedbacks from me thus far (one from dealer, one by mail, one by phone) and no doubt, this ...

Pros: Excellent acceleration, great gas mileage, roomy interior Cons: Transmission issues, interior not aligned in some spots, accelerator lag The Bottom Line: I would look at other cars first until Toyota fixes these transmission issues
I like the looks of the new avalon, I prefer it over the maxima. Lots of room in the car, truck is a little small but works for me. I have the touring model and it handles really well for a large car. I have the 360watt stereo which is more than ok ...

Pros: Responsive engine/transmission, electronics, and of course Toyota reliability. Cons: Wish the trunk opening was a bit larger. The Bottom Line: The car is a great buy with amazing features.
I recently purchased a 2005 Toyota Avalon XL. It was quite a step up from my previous car, a 1999 Toyota Solara SE. After reading some of these other reviews, it made me chuckle quite a bit. In more ways than one, the Avalon surpasses autos like the ...

Excellent buy if it weren't for the horrible transmission

Pros: Sleek styling, lots of power, comfortable leather seats, very quiet ride. Cons: Absolutely horrible transmission. What were they thinking?
Upgraded sound system a joke. Lacks Sub Base.
We purchased our 2005 Avalon over several other makes because of the many friends who own and love their 2004 and earlier Avalons. Initial test drive was without fault. The seats were more comfortable than any other car we had test driven and it had good power and handling.
After having driven the car for several days, it became evident there was a problem with the transmission. It would hesitate at low speeds. Very VERY bothersome. Also, when slowing down, you know when it is changing gears because the computer apparently overcompensates and you feel the car lunge forward. Took it in for service and was told that the computer has to "learn" your driving habits. We're now at 12,000 miles and the problems still persist.
We have a friend with a 2006 Avalon and another friend with a 2006 Lexus and they both are complaining about the same issue.

Lag in accelerator and transmission response

Pros: Wonderful bells and whistles on the steering wheel, great leg room in the back seat. Cons: Trunk too small, 2003 was huge.
I love my 2005 Avalon XL, except for the SIGNIFICANT LAG BETWEEN THE TIME YOU PRESS THE ACCELERATOR AND THE TRANSMISSION GETS THE MESSAGE AND ACTUALLY RESPONDS. This also happens with the opposite action. When I let off the accelerator the car sometimes will not slow down unless I put the breaks on. I have taken it into the Toyota dealer to be checked only to be told that "The car is performing as it was designed to." Toyota's have long been my favorite, but now I will definitely pay more attention during the test drive.
