I owned a Compaq notebook before buying this one so I didn't think much about buying a second one. My mistake.
In about 6 months, the hard drive failed. I had to send it back to them to have the drive replaced after talking to some real unhelpful Compaq support people. Two month after that, the thing would not boot up and I had to reset/reload the factory standards and wipe everything out. Now, a little over a year... while it is no longer covered... the back light goes out on the screen. To replace the screen would cost $1200 dollars plus labor.
Pros: You can find these computers for sale cheap. Cons: Seem to be some serious inherent problems.
Worst laptop I have ever owned. Incredibly slow and unreliable. I have reinstalled the system 3 times to try to get to a stable system. It is running now but hardly worth the effort. Probably some serious BIOS problems which have never been totally resolved.
If you do a web search on "problems compaq 2170us" you will find enough evidence that you will really want to avoid this series.

I like this laptop, because i can do almost anything that i can do with my normal desktop. it has a very nice sound editing quality, and doesn't slow down too much when i get large files.
About the only thing that annoys me about it is when your'e sitting in a chair, using it it gets very warm. i almost think its going to melt to my jeans.
