Nice little firewall/router/wireless access point.

by curtisonline , Dec 07 '03
Pros: Easy setup. Many advanced options.
Cons: None at this time.
I purchased this wireless access point, firewall, router and four port switch from BestBuy after they had a $50 dollar rebate. I also was looking for a small footprint firewall to replace a Linux IPTables system I was using. I must say I am very ...

Nice compact solid router

by tsienville , Mar 23 '04
Pros: $29 price tag, simple and dependable, small footprint (size of a paperback book).
Cons: I have no cons - it does exactly what I expect for $29.
I purchased the Dlink DI-514 as an extra router for a second DSL account at home and I am very impressed. I have been a customer of D-Link for some time and also own their DI-624, and three wireless cards. The DI-514 confirms that I continue to like ...

by bac0n , Jul 30 '04
Pros: di-514 is extremely affordable, works perfect and is highy customizable
Cons: none
I purchased the dlink di-514 to replace my dlink di-711, which I dropped while moving to a new house. I bought the di-514 from buy.com for $41.50 with free shipping and then there was a 20 mail in rebate. So I got the router for a total of 21.50, can't ...

by ivplay, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Jan 09 '04
Pros: Great Price, Easy Setup, Small Form for the desktop

You get what you pay for plus more, but not a great router.

by edavid3001 , Apr 13 '05
Pros: Great features for the budget minded home user.
Cons: Do not use in a remote office type situation. Firmware make support difficult.
After rebate, this thing was $19. So I got what I paid for, plus more. The router has some nice features. I bought it for the wired hardware router. Later I added WIFI using an Airolink 4800 NIC. The initial loaded firmware was very buggy, as is ...

It's a bargain, and it works like a bargain.

by xanman25 , Feb 06 '04
Pros: Inexpensive, mac address filtering, high speed ethernet, fairly strong signal strength.
Cons: Annoying disconnection issue about every hour, wireless connections are dropped. Sometimes a bit cranky.
Well, it's a bargain wireless and 10/100 ethernet (4 port) router. MAC address filtering and a powerful firewall (but the firewall requires some experience.) BUT, one significant issue: the wireless part seems to drop wifi connections every hour or so. ...

Must power off to really turn off wireless

by chdyoung , Dec 30 '03
Pros: Small
Cons: Wireless does not turn off, but goes unencrypted instead
Caution: you may unknowingly be providing open access to your network, but new firmware from Dlink fixes this trouble. Supposedly you can turn off the wireless function and use only the 4 port router. When wireless should be disabled, it actually ...

Don't keep time by the di-514 router

by jimb2b , Jan 24 '04
Pros: Connects all my direct connect computers to the Internet 90 % of the time.
Cons: Hit or miss Wi-Fi connection. Undependable internal clock.
Got my DI-514 at Best Buy on the day after Thanksgiving, 2003. I wanted it for my Wi-Fi PDA. When I hooked it up in the basement, all the direct connect computers worked fine. My Wi-Fi PDA was another story. At times it would have a great signal and at ...

Bad Firmware updates

by dcarlber , Oct 01 '04
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Flaky, problematic connection, overheats
I bought this router, probably for the same reason other bought this router, because it was fairly cheap and looked to have good features. As a caveat, I should say that, if one is a beginning user this router would be a good one to use. However for ...

Cost effective DI-514 Wi-FI Broadband/Router
by d1urban ,May 04 '04
Pros: Easy installation. Just plugged into cable modem, and it worked.
Cons: WebAdmin interface flaky through wireless card. Router reboots disconnect wireless connection.
The DI-514 is a perfect low cost solution to enable wireless in an apartment or small office space.
Works great! Very easy, right out of the box; just make sure to enable MAC filtering and/or WEP.
Preferred configuration through connected port, instead of wireless card. Router reboots will disconnect wireless connection momentarily.

Great Router...
by corrupt_data ,Nov 27 '05
Pros: Inexpensive, Fast, Stable when Cool, Auto MDI/MDIX, Able to service a large network
Cons: Overheats without Cooling Modifications, Only 802.11b, WPA can be buggy
Well, it's great now that I drilled many, many holes in the casing so it stays cool. This router is works very well for a $5 router, having said that, it's only suited for lots of activity if you drill holes in the top, bottom, and side to allow cooling. With sufficient cooling, this router can route tons of traffic, it functions very, very well now that it has sufficient cooling. Without sufficient cooling, however, it can manage only mild to medium amounts of traffic. It also supports WPA in addition to the standard WEP encryption for Wireless.

D-Link DI-514 Wireless Router
by famedeo ,Feb 05 '04
Pros: Great Product, Good Quality, Good Dollar Value, Small Footprint.
Cons: Maybe D-link could use numbers instead of words to reflect signal strength.
If you are interested in a good quality wireless network at an economical price, then this is the router for you. It was easy to setup and the instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I just bought this router from buy.com for $44 (Free S&H)and will be receiving a $20 rebate from D-Link. The unit worked flawlessly and signal strength was either Excellent or Very Good at all times. So, if you are thinking about going wireless, this would be a great addition to your wireless network.

Good, but a little annoying
by canadiensfan ,May 05 '05
Pros: if your computer connects automatically, it works great in those situations where you can't connect
Cons: annoying in some cases
We got this router a couple months ago. It is better than our DI-604 router. There are 8 lights on the router: Power, Status, WAN, WLAN, 1, 2, 3, and 4. Our main computers are computers 1 and 3. Our laptop is computer 2. However, it is a little annoying in some cases. First of all, our computer connects automatically, but sometimes it disconnects on us, and I get fed up with it. Second, when I connect, it restarts on me. But I would have to say this is an overall good router.

D-Link wireless router
by raygfl ,Dec 29 '03
Pros: Ease of installation, and flawless performance.
Cons: Problem with weak signal strength
I purchased this type of router at Best-Buy because my wife and I have separate computers in different parts of the house. The set-up on this router was very easy, which surprised me as I'm a novice with this kind of thing. Hooking up the other end of it to my wife's computer, the slave, proved effortless, also. The only drawbacks were with their customer service--seemed a little unknowledgeable, and a bit unconcerned--and the signal strength which my wife received. That was not quite up to par, and was the reason for my call to customer service. However, I solved the problem of the weak signal strength by buying a 35' cable and hooking this up to my wife's computer via US Bus and an ethernet card. So far, the system works flawlessly.
