Pros: Simple, sleek, region-free Cons: Remote may cause issues, but easily solved
I was in the market for a region-free DVD player, after spending some time in Europe and wanting to bring home some DVDs with me. VHS tapes recorded in PAL cannot be played on a US VCR, and so a DVD player was the way to go. Through an online ...

Pros: Price, Easy to setup and use Cons: Poor product quality, remote gave out after a month.
Nice entry level DVD player. Cannot comment on price point since received as gift. Easy to setup. Controls on player and remote are intuitive to use.
Instructions do not recommend placing other devices on top-obviously for ventilation...

OK but does not play DVD+R recorded disks
by cookiecooky ,Feb 27 '05
Pros: Easy Region Free modification Cons: Does not play DVD+R disks
Nice player especially for the region-free option on the secret menu so no firmware upgrade is required.
This player will not play DVD+R recorded disks, though.

Nice Multi-System, Region Free Play-them-all Player
by kfm999 ,Oct 23 '03
Pros: Multi-System NTSC/PAL, Region-free, great remote, and plays absolutely EVERYTHING! Cons: No Progressive Scan, Price remains unchanged for a year
I watch a lot of movies I bought from Japan, HongKong, Taiwan and needed a DVD player that could do the job, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on this so I kind of just went for Daewoo 5800 for the price - $90 I paid one year ago.
Till this day, I have NOT found any DVDs, VCDs, MP3s, JPGs CDs that it won't read! and the universal remote is great, with all the functions on it without having to go thru the menus.
Other than progressive scanning, this player has everything - Dolby 5.1, DTS, Coaxial and has great picture quality, and NTSC/PAL auto conversion is built-in.
However, the price stays the same at around $90, largely due to the fact that its region-free, so you might want to look at Philips DVD727 - available at CompUSA and has progressive scan at only $79; oh, and the Philips is easily region-free with remote hack.

Very Nice, Easy to hook up
by lmf580 ,Jan 02 '04
Pros: Looks very good, easy to install Cons: Needs more detailed set-up instructions for on screen and remote functions.
Got this as a X-Mass present. It was real easy to hook-up. I have it running through my surround sound, works great, picture is excellent. Instruction book could be a little more detailed and remote functions are not very well explained. But over all, for the money it is a very good unit.

Daewoo DVD-5800 DVD Player
by johncbi ,Dec 05 '06
Pros: Good remote feel
Good key layout
Good menus and options
Will play "computer-burned" home DVD's Cons: Will not play "home-burned" DVDs recorded by consumer home DVD players.
I'm following up on "Big Steve's" review, and hoping to compliment what he has written
I purchased two of these players at Sam's Club, more for the price, than it's technical features. It was a nice player for it's time, and had a good range of features for the price.
One player has broken, due to extremely hard use by a cigarette smoker (not sure if this has anything to do with
the breakdown), and the other is still chugging along.
I'd forgotten about the PAL playback compatibility and when
a friend sent a DVD from Australia, I loved the player all
the more. None of my JVC players will do this.
Unfortunately, you must return the units to the factory for repair.

Bought one for use in UK. Great player plays everything, vcd, svcd, dvd from any format and produces excellent picture on my PAL only Tv.
Compared to my Cyberhome 528 the Daewoo 5800 is luxury with better sound.

My main problem with this...
by vijtheveg_dt3000 ,Dec 07 '02
My main problem with this DVD player is that it freezes up randomly for no reason at all, especially during the initial portions of a movie. I then have no option but to turn it off and back on again. The other problem is that it does not have a universal remote code, so I have to use the remote that comes with the DVD.
Otherwise, it is a good player with lots of features.
