by jps246, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Mar 10 '05
Pros: Very competitive price, Solid construction, Good sound, Fairly intuitive interface
Cons: No manual, Ear buds could be better, Flaky USB cord
The Dell DJ 20 gigabyte MP3 player is a worthy alternative to consider if you’re looking for a high-capacity MP3 player with a good user interface and good battery life. The only real negative to the device is the included music management ...

The 20 GB Dell Digital Jukebox - Dell's First Stab at Apple

by vadimio Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, May 24 '04
Pros: 20 gigs, very easy to use, voice recorder, long-lasting battery, affordable
Cons: some slight playback issues, no TV/Weather/FM/AM tuner, should buy another pair of earphones
It seems like everyone that I know has some sort of MP3 player. I've seen dozens of iPods popping into the hands of my friends, but recently one of one of them purchased a 20 GB Dell Digital Jukebox off www.dell.com. I have gotten an ample of ...

Dell Digital Jukebox (20GB) Mp3 Player: Cheap, or a Good Buy?

by hwz1 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Feb 15 '04
Pros: Inexpensive, lots of memory, easy to use, good software, good LCD light
Cons: Poor headphones, boring design
I have seen and experienced the Apple ipod and must admit that it is pretty cool. So, when Dell decided that they were going to branch out and enter the MP3 world as well, I had to see what all the fuss was about. I mean this was and still is primarily ...

How Cool is This?

by smartone86 , Sep 29 '04
Pros: Software, sound, memory, battery life, ease of transfer
Cons: Long wires, earbuds fall out, slightly larger than iPod
So how did I decide that it was worth it for me, a poor college student, to spend this much money on a device to play music? My story is simple. I am in love. I am in love with music, and now in love with this gadget. Last year was my senior year ...

Solid Contendor for iPod's crown

by Godai-kun Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Apr 08 '04
Pros: great sound quality, built like a tank. Inexpensive.
Cons: firmware and packaged software both need improvement
What it is: A hard-drive-based portable MP3 player, available in 15 and 20 GB sizes, and competing directly with the gold standard Apple iPod. What it costs: $199-259 list (per Dell website, 4/2004). This is $100-$150 less than the ...

Hardware Competent, Software Terrible

by perrin110 , Aug 04 '04
Pros: Hardware has simple, straightforward controls; good small size
Cons: Miserable software highly impacts ownership experience
I believe the Dell DJ is marketed toward people who don't want to spend a whole lot of time and effort learning how the product works--people like me who just want a simple, easy to use MP3 player. The DJ hardware--the MP3 player itself--is dandy. ...

Dell Digital Jukebox - the best alternative to an iPod!

by gvassar , Mar 11 '04
Pros: Great price, solid look and feel, excellent battery life, great sound
Cons: Somewhat clunky with your music files, heavier than the iPod.

Dell does Digital Music Right

by brewerda , Jun 06 '04
Pros: Tactical and practical, easy to use, bundled hardware and software especially scrolling through music, affordable
Cons: Must use included Musicmatch software to transfer music files, not trendy like Ipod?

First of all, let me say that I'm a geek (occupation, not lifestyle). I purchased the DJ 20 to use as a music system while on the road on my motorcycle and when I run. Now, common sense should have told me that a hard-drive based MP3 player may not be ...

Very disappointed with Dell Jukebox performance

by shorty1432 , Feb 21 '05
Pros: Cheap (but you get what you pay for)
Cons: Unreliable, after 1 year warranty expires no repair services, battery can't be replaced.
I am a big fan of Dell products and service, at least I was until my experience with the Dell Jukebox. I purchased one as a gift for Christmas of 2003. It doesn't offer anything that can't be found on other popular MP3 players, but it was cheap. I soon ...

by scs0 , Oct 05 '05
Pros: 1) Easy to use 2) Not an Apple product
Cons: 1) No repair service. 2) Poor WMA support 3) Unprotected headphone jack
This is a nice audio player, but I'd really like to see them reduce the size of the device. It does have a few problems though: 1) As a small portable device the unit will likely find itself in situations where it can be damaged. If you do damage ...

Cons: No MACINTOSH You have to pay $19 more for the software Clumsy unit

Cons: never want to put it down; all the jealousy it provokes!

Expensive Paper weight
by nynaeveas ,May 07 '06
Pros: Heavy enough to keep paper from flying away.
Cons: Slow and computer interface is bad
This was a waste of money. It boots really slow, takes forever to change songs and don't even try to change anything usless you can give it your 100% attention. My hard drive failed and after being given the run around by Dell for a week, follwed advice given here. Yes, slamming the DJ as hard as you can on a tabletop does fix a hard drive error. Only took 3 slams. Get something other than a Dell.

Great little player
by timlight ,Jan 02 '07
Pros: Great battery life, easy to use interface, good deal!
Cons: Not Microsoft PlayforSure compatible, included software is awful
I love this player. I have had it for 4 years and have not had a single problem with it. This machine is built like a tank. I have over 5 days worth of music on it, and have plenty of room left.

The unit has a voice recorder which is great for recording long college lectures or meetings. Robust user interface based on Creative's software.

Long battery life, easy to use interface, good backlighting. Only problem now is that after 3 years I have to push the buttons a little harder than before to get it going.

Two systems have crashed
by anugopala ,Jan 07 '07
Pros: Allows me to copy music very quickly and tons of it.
Cons: Hardware completely unreliable. Keeps constantly crashing. Rebuilds database contantly.
I bought a Dell 20GB Jukebox over 2 years ago. The first one's hardware had trouble from month three after I put about 400 songs on it. Kept freezing and crashing. When I needed it the most, on a flight, it went completely dead. Thought that it was the battery. But found out when I called Customer Care that the hardware crashed and I lost all my songs.

They replaced it when I called Customer Care. Which was great. I've had the replacement for about a year now and about 3 months ago, whenever I turn it on, I get 'Rebuilding Database' It continues to happen every time I turn it on now. Yesterday, it went completely dead again.

The hardware is completely unreliable and buggy, not to mention, untrustworthy. I'm seriously thinking about going to buy a new iPOD. This time around I was able to download a software called Jukebox desktop which will allow me to copy my files from my jukebox to my desktop before the entire thing crashes on me again!

Yeah, It's Sweet
by ftmoe ,Apr 16 '05
Pros: Price, Sound, Battery Life, Transferring music, store data, blue LCD light, space, Software, Customer Support
Cons: Few Extras
I now own a Dell DJ 20(2nd GEN). I am now on my 2nd one because after about a month, there was a mysterious dot in the middle of the LCD.
Dell has improved the customer support with online chat. It is very fast and very easy. The stylish case is very strong, and has a nice metallic look.
The sound is good except with the provided standard earphones (I found the same ones in walmart for $3.50). Transferring music is easy with REAL Player, Musicmatch (provided), and Windows Media 8-10.
Much worth the money, and before rushing online to get it, wait a month since they randomly go 10-20% off.

Ipod's worthy opponent.
by shontai ,May 29 '05
Pros: The Dell Dj 20 is alot less expensive than the ipod.
Cons: It's a little larger than the ipod. (It's just a small difference).
I was contemplating purchasing an ipod but my husband told me about the Dell Dj 20 mp3 player. He told me that it was less expensive, held more music and had a longer battery life than the ipod. It didn't take me very long to realize he was right the Dell Dj 20 was definitely the better value. I ended up paying $229 for my Dell Dj 20, which is about $70 less than the ipod. I'm 100% satisfied with my Dell Dj 20. I've had no problems with it so far. So if you're looking for an mp3 player that's as good as the ipod, consider purchasing a Dell Dj 20. And Dell also provided free shipping with my order. My total savings was almost $100. Now that's a good bargain!

It was great before it broke
by dxc1099 ,Aug 14 '05
Pros: Lots of great accessories, can use various music stores, comes with customer service
Cons: When it breaks, it has to be completely replaced
This was a Father's Day present (bought it in June). It was very easy to use, i.e. with various music stores, FM transmitter, accessory remote, and instructions. Loading songs onto the DJ was faster than other reviews stated and our computer is ~4 years old. But one day, we couldn't get the lollipop charger connector to disconnect from the DJ. That really sucked! After calling Dell's customer service and only waiting 3 minutes before I spoke to a real person, we are going to have a new DJ and lollipop connector shipped to us. I have to give major props to the Dell customer service people. It seems as though Dell is re-embracing customer satisfaction. Make sure the you purchase the accident coverage!! It only makes sense since things will always and forever break. Yes, it will be a pain to reload all the songs to the DJ. At least the songs are saved to our computer's hard drive so that way we won't have to buy the songs again or acquire them by some other means. I'd say it's worth the money as long as you get a good warranty and service plan. Protect your investment.

Compared to the Ipod, not worth the savings
by chadwick14 ,Dec 24 '04
Pros: Good concept, good looks. Scroll wheel vs. the click wheel concept of the Ipod.
Cons: See comments.
I received the 20 GB (Gen 2) DJ for Xmas, and after spending 2 frustrating days trying to get it to work consistently, including 4 solid hours (no exaggeration) on the phone with Dell's tech support, I returned it and got an Ipod. The Ipod has worked flawlessly, and I would highly recommend anybody considering the DJ vs. Ipod spend the extra few bucks for a more reliable and user friendly product. Dell's concept is good, but the unit locked up on me repeatedly, and would "error out" every time i tried to synch up with my computer. I love gadgets, and they don't have to have every bell and whistle known to man, but I also don't want to feel like it's a full time job getting it to work properly. If you feel the same way, avoid Dell.

Great Bang for buck
by angus2816 ,May 01 '05
Pros: Great battery life. Great sound. Reliable.
Cons: Jam jackets & other accessories not available in Canada yet.
I was considering buying an iPod. I don't regret going with Dell for a second though. My gen 2 Dell DJ 20 is perfect. It works like a charm. I guess the earbud headphones could be better but even iPod comes with run of the mill earbuds.

Navigating with the scroll barrel is very easy and the huge backlit LCD screen is great.

I have read that some people have complained about not getting a manual. The Dell DJ does come with a manual. It just comes as a readme file on the CD you receive with the player. I really enjoy this idea because it makes it impossible to wreck your manual (my dogs love chewing my video game manuals).

All in all Dell is worth your money

Don't Expect Service!
by brewjack98 ,May 14 '05
Pros: Quality of sound, design.
Cons: NO SERVICE, NO REPAIRS = EXPENSIVE PAPERWEIGHT
I have 3 Dell DJs, 2 20 GB players and 1 Pocket DJ. We loved them, until we had a problem. Our oldest DJ is now a 17 month old paperweight. It seemed like a small problem: the headphone jack slot is loose so the headphones aren't making a good connection. We contacted Dell. NO SERVICE or REPAIRS for DJs, only replacement and only as long as they are under warranty. I'm now the not-so-proud owner of a $259 paperweight. If you own one of these, make sure to fork over the extra money for the extended warranty, and DO IT BEFORE THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY EXPIRES. I contacted Dell by email, phone and snail mail. No repair, no replacement, and no, I can't purchase the extended warranty now because my original warranty has expired. Be careful, unless you collect paperweights!

Dell Service NOT as Good AS Advertises
by shm53 ,Oct 05 '06
Pros: When it was working it played pretty good.
Cons: The hard drive freezes and requires a hard reset to get the unit going again.
I have a Gen 1 20GB Dell DJ. I packed it in my checked luggage on a recent flight and when I arrived home it no longer worked. The screen had large blue spots with streaks like a broken glass and the unit would not turn off. When the battery ran down , I recharged with the same issues. I contacted Dell for an address to send the unit back for repair and was told that they would not repair the unit HOWEVER I could purchase a refurbished unit for 139.00.

Expensive Lesson Learned
by okie59 ,Dec 31 '05
Pros: Very nice while it lasted.
Cons: It only lasted about 10 mins. past the warranty. No way to repair.
A short time after the warranty ran out, my Dell DJ simply stopped working. It was in no way mishandled, mistreated, dropped, etc. I called Dell and they diagnosed a hard drive failure. They claimed that this would be too expensive to fix and that I should buy a new one. This one was less than a year and a half old!

Based on this experience, I would not buy this or any Dell product. There are simply no options if (when) it breaks.

Beware of Dell DJ20
by mstanggrl25 ,Dec 22 '05
Pros: Good price, holds a large amount of songs
Cons: Poor customer service, bulky, bad software, hard to use
I bought this unit about a year ago via the internet. It was a good deal and was new in the box-I did not ask questions. It is often hard to install music-since there are numerous glitches in the included software that I have had to install numerous times. The price on the Dell is reasonable compared to the Apple products-but it is hard and often expensive to find accessories for it. It is now also being replaced by a newer model. Dell makes good products -but their customer service is awful-I bought a laptop with a defective modem and I spent hours trying to get that issue resolved. The majority of the customer service people do not speak English well at all! The product is good because it holds so many songs. But, it is bulkier then the other products out on the market. I would not buy a Dell MP3 player again and I tell everyone I know not to also. I would stick with Apple-they are the market leader and have the most accessories for their products.

Don't waste your money
by nuggib ,Mar 23 '05
Pros: competitive price
Cons: Non-replaceable parts, bad software, horrible support
The DJ20 is a decent player. I've had mine a little over a year. But the Musicmatch software it comes with sucks, the headphones suck, and if you have problems with it (as I have) after your warranty expired, you screwed. Not only do you have to speak with the technical support guys in India to explain your problem, but they will quickly tell you Dell is going to give you the shaft. The internal HD in my device failed out of the blue yesterday, I would estimate the total usage of the player to be under 20 hrs (it looks brand new). The repair people at Dell told me they couldn't repair Axims or DJ's, but would gladly ship me an exchange for $259. Sadly a brand new DJ20 sells for $250 on Dell's website. What's worse, I've read Dell's forum and for every positive thing said about the DJ, there's at least 3 negatives. Mostly concerning the internal Hitachi HD's failing, or the Lithium Ion battery dying. Long story short, don't make the same mistake I did.

Excellent!!!
by floridakev ,Apr 23 '04
Pros: Lightweight, small, intuitive, interface is very easy to understand.
Cons: Does not store songs in the same order as on the CD. Weird.
Great music jukebox. Very small and lightweight. Great sound! Very powerful. Nice headphones.

I had a Sony NetMD and it was great but buying and managing the mini-discs got tiresome.

I do not really like Musicmatch so I use Windows Media Player to rip my Cds to my hard drive. Then I transfer them to the DJ. This works pretty well.

Price is about $150 less than an Ipod so I am very pleased.

Dell's MP3 Jukebox is a disposable wonder
by atelwood ,May 18 '04
Pros: The unit has a lot of memory for the cost and it is well built.
Cons: Dell doesn't support the unit,
I got the Jukebox 20GB MP3 player for a gift...I'm giving it back. After three hours and six phone calls to Manila, Panama, India, and Austin I discovered that when the battery dies in the unit, you're in trouble. At best, if the battery dies while under warranty, Dell will send you a new Jukebox after you pay to ship the old unit back to them. You lose all the music/data stored in the old unit. If the battery dies outside the warranty time-frame, Dell will not replace the battery at any cost. It is an expensive throwaway unit.

Warranty nightmare
by demonspawn ,Apr 10 '05
Pros: When functioning properly this unit is very easy to use.
Cons: The refurbished units are garbage.
My first DJ survived about ten months. Unfortunately, the hard drive crashed. Dell quickly shipped me a replacement since it was under warranty, but I got a "refurbished" DJ rather than a new replacement. The First replacement survived about one month. I shipped it back and received another "refurbished" unit. SURPRISE! From the time I received it, it malfunctioned. Since my initial one-year warranty had expired - barely - when I called Dell for my FOURTH DJ, I was told, "too bad." Keep in mind that Dell failed to replace my original DJ within the warranty period with something that worked. This is by far the worst experience I have had with any computer company customer support. Avoid this product, and avoid Dell.

hard drive failed
by miagoomba ,Oct 17 '05
Pros: easy to use, musicmatch software works well,
Cons: poor reliability, very poor tech support from Dell
I've owned DJ for just over a year. Have been happy with performance and ease of use. Unfortunately the hard drive has failed (just outside warranty period). I spent much time on line and on the phone with tech support, was directed from one department to another (to parts dept. where they told me that there were no replacable hard drives for DJ). I was ultimately able to "repair" it by following advice of another DJ owner on line with the same problem: took it apart, got to the hard drive, banged on it. Now it works again, but for how long... next time-ipod

by midgedog1404 ,Feb 08 '06
Pros: ease in downloading music
Cons: very afraid to use it. broke very easy.
my experience with the dell dj was less than perfect.
since we we're buying a dell computer we decided to buy the digital dj. I liked the idea of downloading music, but unfortunately this product did not last. after one year the harddrive crashed. they replace with refurbished item, which after a year the headphone jack broke. They will not replace because warranty expired.

Cheap, but it crashes very often during moving
by los111 ,Jan 30 '06
Pros: Cheap, long battery
Cons: Heavy, bulky, it crashes very often if you move it
I never had ipod, so i can't compare. But this Dell DJ crashed all the time. If you don't move it, it works fine, but if you jog or walk while listening it, it crashes every 5 minutes or so. I won't recommend this.

Nice while it works, but only lasts about a year
by Aisling_uo ,Jul 29 '05
Pros: Slightly cheaper than the ipod. Sounds great when it works.
Cons: Lasts about a year. No repair options.
I purchased a Dell DJ 20 in Dec of 2003. The unit was never dropped or mistreated. It simply stopped working in August of 2004. Dell sent me a new unit. In July of 2005, this new unit simply stopped working. Again, never dropped or mistreated. I visted the Dell site as well as the Dell DJ Forums. This type of hardware failure is chronic and well known to Dell.

I spoke with Technical Support and Customer Service. After over 3 hours, the offical response from Dell is that the unit is out of warranty, it can not be fixed and I should buy a new Dell DJ.

I would advise against purchasing a Dell DJ. It works great, while it works but will suddenly stop working one day and leave you without options. I spent over $250 on something that essentially lasts a year. I thought I was saving money by not buying the Ipod. I should have spent the extra $100 initially since I now have to purchase a whole new unit, plus accessories.

Dell DJ 20 -- for those sick of the ultra-trendy ipod
by clancifer ,Dec 06 '04
Pros: Awesome battery life, easy to operate, stylish
Cons: Music Match software
When getting a b-day present, my wife asked if I wanted an ipod or a Dell DJ. I chose the Dell mainly because I was sick of seeing so many others with the Ipod. Boy, did I make the right choice! The battery life is great, I can play my entire MP3 collection (over 4,000 songs) and with the car adapter & Belkin radio transmitter, it works great while driving.

Any complaints? Of course, everything has a fault. The MusicMatch software downright stinks. It seems like it is using all my computer's memory it can just to run. I'm going to try that Dudebox software I read on here, but I haven't done so yet.

The DJ has locked up on me twice, but I think both times were because of a corrupted MP3.

I'm going to buy my wife the Pocket DJ for Christmas... so that should tell you that I've enjoyed this product. Good job, Dell! Kick some ipod butt.

Dell DJ 20 GB: Great solid player
by ssracing ,Mar 29 '04
Pros: Small yet solid, great display, easy to navigate, huge capacity, inline remote and case packaged.
Cons: Don't care much for the MusicMatch software, earbud headphones, installation was confusing, poor accessories.
The 20 GB Dell DJ was a great deal considering it came packaged with a carrying case and inline remote and was only 50 bucks more than the 15 GB (which did not come with either). Not much bling factor, but I wasn't really looking for anything flashy or trendy. Sizewise, it's only slightly larger than an iPod but it's much heavier (which I like). It came packaged with earbud headphones which seemed good quality, but I typically prefer traditional headphones due to better sound. Easy to navigate and create playlists on-the-fly. MusicMatch software is so so... works fine but there are definitely some bugs. Battery life is AMAZING!

As far as accessories are concerned... not nearly as good as for the iPODs. No good cradles (the Belkin is absolute crap [do NOT get]) are available and compatible FM transmitters through Dell are pretty bad. More about the cradle... only serves to hold the player. Power and USB connector must still be connected to the player directly due to placement of ports.

If it were just a little smaller it would be perfect!
by ag95keri ,Oct 18 '04
Pros: LONG battery life, very easy to use, lots of nifty accessories
Cons: too big compared to others with similar features
It's very easy to use. I purchased it specifically because I knew it worked with MusicMatch Jukebox software which is what I've been using for years to download and rip music. All my music and playlists copied over flawlessly (the second time I synced . . . had issues the first time) and now when I connect it's very easy to modify and create new playlists. I can even create the lists on the jukebox itself when it's not connected though I can't re-order the songs easily.

Overall, it's very easy to use and the battery seems to last forever. Dell says it's 16 hours of battery life, and I would say that I always get that much use out of it before I have to charge it again.

My only complaint is that it's a little too big, more than 1/4 inch thicker and wider than an iPod as well as 2 ozs heavier.

Dell DJ FANTASTIC, BETTER VALUE THAN IPOD!
by thinknofu3 ,May 27 '04
Pros: Great disk space, 15 hrs battery life, cheaper!
Cons: Only slightly heavier than the iPod. Not enough to make it cumbersome though.
I was going to get an iPod, then I did some research. Turns out the Dell 20 GB DJ has more than double the battery life, better PC interfacing, same ease of use, and $100 CHEAPER than the comparable iPOD. Don't let apple rip you off - plus Dell has amazing 24 hour customer service!

generation 2 kicks ipods buttocks
by hepike99 ,Jan 05 '05
Pros: everything I mentioned above
Cons: mine didn't come with a carrying case or a remote.
Ok while I was extremely dissapointed at first that I got the dell dj instead of the ipod my dissapointment soon left. I have read reviews on here regarding the dj and was extremely hesitant about it. It seemed that everyone either loved it or hates it. I love it. I charged it for 2 and a half hours like in the instrucitions, I put in the disc that it came with and bam before I know it I was ready to go and since my computer synced with it immediately I had only two choices to make. I could have musicmatch put all of my music on there automatically or I could do it mannually.....geez decisions decisions. I think from what I have done so far the dell people have got a winner. It is easy to use and Being that I am not very computer literate I feel if you can't use music match someone should hit you in the head with a tack hammer because you are a moron. Seriously though its not that hard to figure out. Way to go dell you guys did it.

Cons: i probably wont ever use the voice recorder
I have had my DJ for about a month! I can't stop telling people about it! The fact that this thing plays mp3PRO is really nice! The price was nice! and it has Dell's name on it so it must be good! With the 20 Gigs of space heck i can put my collection of Mp3's and yours and his and hers!

Look for another product...
by csupsyprof ,Oct 22 '04
Pros: Easy interface... when it worked.
Cons: Hard drive crashed! Two products in a row...
I purchased the Dell 20 GB Jukebox in June. When it worked, it was exceptional. Unfortunately, it didn't work much... I was in frequent contact with customer support - which isn't all that easy to do. The chat service is difficult to log into and will direct you to the phone in the end! There is a known conflict with the MusicMatch software and Windows. The player frequently locked up and required more than one re-format (and, hence, a loss of all existing music). The hard-drive finally crashed earlier this month. To Dell's credit, they agreed to replace the player within 2 days. I received the refurbished replacement on time, but it crashed within the first 24 hours... After a lonnnnnnng (over 2 hours) call to customer service, I declined a third product...

Tweak the unit and you have one fine machine.
by drsales ,Sep 13 '04
Pros: Built well, long lasting battery good sound for a stock unit.
Cons: Down loading and organizing play list.
I did not like the headphones so I purchased the Etymotic 6S. ( Yes they are worth the investment...dead quite) Then I purchased an amplifier to boost the output signal. Put it in a handy traveling pouch and my oh my what a difference.

Frankly I would have done the same with the Apple. I always felt that the overall sound of both units were good but needed a push to move to the next musical level.

Downloading songs is a pain in the butt. However I can live with it. I agree if you download an album-cd it does not record the songs in the same order. What gives here?

The unit is not the latest in leading edge design. Rather it reminds me of an old am-fm hand held radio I had back in the 60-70's. Built well but ugly.

All in all I am very happy with my purchase. Walking the dog is more enjoyable. Plus when reading I can listen to my favorite tunes without bothering the family.

Keep an eye open to the Dell web page. They will offer discount pricing.
