Two systems have crashed
by anugopala ,Jan 07 '07
Pros: Allows me to copy music very quickly and tons of it.
Cons: Hardware completely unreliable. Keeps constantly crashing. Rebuilds database contantly.
I bought a Dell 20GB Jukebox over 2 years ago. The first one's hardware had trouble from month three after I put about 400 songs on it. Kept freezing and crashing. When I needed it the most, on a flight, it went completely dead. Thought that it was the battery. But found out when I called Customer Care that the hardware crashed and I lost all my songs.

They replaced it when I called Customer Care. Which was great. I've had the replacement for about a year now and about 3 months ago, whenever I turn it on, I get 'Rebuilding Database' It continues to happen every time I turn it on now. Yesterday, it went completely dead again.

The hardware is completely unreliable and buggy, not to mention, untrustworthy. I'm seriously thinking about going to buy a new iPOD. This time around I was able to download a software called Jukebox desktop which will allow me to copy my files from my jukebox to my desktop before the entire thing crashes on me again!

Yeah, It's Sweet
by ftmoe ,Apr 16 '05
Pros: Price, Sound, Battery Life, Transferring music, store data, blue LCD light, space, Software, Customer Support
Cons: Few Extras
I now own a Dell DJ 20(2nd GEN). I am now on my 2nd one because after about a month, there was a mysterious dot in the middle of the LCD.
Dell has improved the customer support with online chat. It is very fast and very easy. The stylish case is very strong, and has a nice metallic look.
The sound is good except with the provided standard earphones (I found the same ones in walmart for $3.50). Transferring music is easy with REAL Player, Musicmatch (provided), and Windows Media 8-10.
Much worth the money, and before rushing online to get it, wait a month since they randomly go 10-20% off.

Dell DJ
by commandoboyb ,Aug 12 '06
Pros: it's 20GB, nice menu, easy to use
Cons: size, ear buds, software
My dad got this mp3 player from work, and we haven't had any problems with it. If you want an mp3 player that can hold a lot of songs, this is one to look into.

Ipod's worthy opponent.
by shontai ,May 29 '05
Pros: The Dell Dj 20 is alot less expensive than the ipod.
Cons: It's a little larger than the ipod. (It's just a small difference).
I was contemplating purchasing an ipod but my husband told me about the Dell Dj 20 mp3 player. He told me that it was less expensive, held more music and had a longer battery life than the ipod. It didn't take me very long to realize he was right the Dell Dj 20 was definitely the better value. I ended up paying $229 for my Dell Dj 20, which is about $70 less than the ipod. I'm 100% satisfied with my Dell Dj 20. I've had no problems with it so far. So if you're looking for an mp3 player that's as good as the ipod, consider purchasing a Dell Dj 20. And Dell also provided free shipping with my order. My total savings was almost $100. Now that's a good bargain!

It was great before it broke
by dxc1099 ,Aug 14 '05
Pros: Lots of great accessories, can use various music stores, comes with customer service
Cons: When it breaks, it has to be completely replaced
This was a Father's Day present (bought it in June). It was very easy to use, i.e. with various music stores, FM transmitter, accessory remote, and instructions. Loading songs onto the DJ was faster than other reviews stated and our computer is ~4 years old. But one day, we couldn't get the lollipop charger connector to disconnect from the DJ. That really sucked! After calling Dell's customer service and only waiting 3 minutes before I spoke to a real person, we are going to have a new DJ and lollipop connector shipped to us. I have to give major props to the Dell customer service people. It seems as though Dell is re-embracing customer satisfaction. Make sure the you purchase the accident coverage!! It only makes sense since things will always and forever break. Yes, it will be a pain to reload all the songs to the DJ. At least the songs are saved to our computer's hard drive so that way we won't have to buy the songs again or acquire them by some other means. I'd say it's worth the money as long as you get a good warranty and service plan. Protect your investment.

Compared to the Ipod, not worth the savings
by chadwick14 ,Dec 24 '04
Pros: Good concept, good looks. Scroll wheel vs. the click wheel concept of the Ipod.
Cons: See comments.
I received the 20 GB (Gen 2) DJ for Xmas, and after spending 2 frustrating days trying to get it to work consistently, including 4 solid hours (no exaggeration) on the phone with Dell's tech support, I returned it and got an Ipod. The Ipod has worked flawlessly, and I would highly recommend anybody considering the DJ vs. Ipod spend the extra few bucks for a more reliable and user friendly product. Dell's concept is good, but the unit locked up on me repeatedly, and would "error out" every time i tried to synch up with my computer. I love gadgets, and they don't have to have every bell and whistle known to man, but I also don't want to feel like it's a full time job getting it to work properly. If you feel the same way, avoid Dell.

Great Bang for buck
by angus2816 ,May 01 '05
Pros: Great battery life. Great sound. Reliable.
Cons: Jam jackets & other accessories not available in Canada yet.
I was considering buying an iPod. I don't regret going with Dell for a second though. My gen 2 Dell DJ 20 is perfect. It works like a charm. I guess the earbud headphones could be better but even iPod comes with run of the mill earbuds.

Navigating with the scroll barrel is very easy and the huge backlit LCD screen is great.

I have read that some people have complained about not getting a manual. The Dell DJ does come with a manual. It just comes as a readme file on the CD you receive with the player. I really enjoy this idea because it makes it impossible to wreck your manual (my dogs love chewing my video game manuals).

All in all Dell is worth your money

Don't Expect Service!
by brewjack98 ,May 14 '05
Pros: Quality of sound, design.
Cons: NO SERVICE, NO REPAIRS = EXPENSIVE PAPERWEIGHT
I have 3 Dell DJs, 2 20 GB players and 1 Pocket DJ. We loved them, until we had a problem. Our oldest DJ is now a 17 month old paperweight. It seemed like a small problem: the headphone jack slot is loose so the headphones aren't making a good connection. We contacted Dell. NO SERVICE or REPAIRS for DJs, only replacement and only as long as they are under warranty. I'm now the not-so-proud owner of a $259 paperweight. If you own one of these, make sure to fork over the extra money for the extended warranty, and DO IT BEFORE THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY EXPIRES. I contacted Dell by email, phone and snail mail. No repair, no replacement, and no, I can't purchase the extended warranty now because my original warranty has expired. Be careful, unless you collect paperweights!

Dell Service NOT as Good AS Advertises
by shm53 ,Oct 05 '06
Pros: When it was working it played pretty good.
Cons: The hard drive freezes and requires a hard reset to get the unit going again.
I have a Gen 1 20GB Dell DJ. I packed it in my checked luggage on a recent flight and when I arrived home it no longer worked. The screen had large blue spots with streaks like a broken glass and the unit would not turn off. When the battery ran down , I recharged with the same issues. I contacted Dell for an address to send the unit back for repair and was told that they would not repair the unit HOWEVER I could purchase a refurbished unit for 139.00.

Never Buy from Dell again

Expensive Lesson Learned
by okie59 ,Dec 31 '05
Pros: Very nice while it lasted.
Cons: It only lasted about 10 mins. past the warranty. No way to repair.
A short time after the warranty ran out, my Dell DJ simply stopped working. It was in no way mishandled, mistreated, dropped, etc. I called Dell and they diagnosed a hard drive failure. They claimed that this would be too expensive to fix and that I should buy a new one. This one was less than a year and a half old!

Based on this experience, I would not buy this or any Dell product. There are simply no options if (when) it breaks.

Beware of Dell DJ20
by mstanggrl25 ,Dec 22 '05
Pros: Good price, holds a large amount of songs
Cons: Poor customer service, bulky, bad software, hard to use
I bought this unit about a year ago via the internet. It was a good deal and was new in the box-I did not ask questions. It is often hard to install music-since there are numerous glitches in the included software that I have had to install numerous times. The price on the Dell is reasonable compared to the Apple products-but it is hard and often expensive to find accessories for it. It is now also being replaced by a newer model. Dell makes good products -but their customer service is awful-I bought a laptop with a defective modem and I spent hours trying to get that issue resolved. The majority of the customer service people do not speak English well at all! The product is good because it holds so many songs. But, it is bulkier then the other products out on the market. I would not buy a Dell MP3 player again and I tell everyone I know not to also. I would stick with Apple-they are the market leader and have the most accessories for their products.

Don't waste your money
by nuggib ,Mar 23 '05
Pros: competitive price
Cons: Non-replaceable parts, bad software, horrible support
The DJ20 is a decent player. I've had mine a little over a year. But the Musicmatch software it comes with sucks, the headphones suck, and if you have problems with it (as I have) after your warranty expired, you screwed. Not only do you have to speak with the technical support guys in India to explain your problem, but they will quickly tell you Dell is going to give you the shaft. The internal HD in my device failed out of the blue yesterday, I would estimate the total usage of the player to be under 20 hrs (it looks brand new). The repair people at Dell told me they couldn't repair Axims or DJ's, but would gladly ship me an exchange for $259. Sadly a brand new DJ20 sells for $250 on Dell's website. What's worse, I've read Dell's forum and for every positive thing said about the DJ, there's at least 3 negatives. Mostly concerning the internal Hitachi HD's failing, or the Lithium Ion battery dying. Long story short, don't make the same mistake I did.

Excellent!!!
by floridakev ,Apr 23 '04
Pros: Lightweight, small, intuitive, interface is very easy to understand.
Cons: Does not store songs in the same order as on the CD. Weird.
Great music jukebox. Very small and lightweight. Great sound! Very powerful. Nice headphones.

I had a Sony NetMD and it was great but buying and managing the mini-discs got tiresome.

I do not really like Musicmatch so I use Windows Media Player to rip my Cds to my hard drive. Then I transfer them to the DJ. This works pretty well.

Price is about $150 less than an Ipod so I am very pleased.

Dell's MP3 Jukebox is a disposable wonder
by atelwood ,May 18 '04
Pros: The unit has a lot of memory for the cost and it is well built.
Cons: Dell doesn't support the unit,
I got the Jukebox 20GB MP3 player for a gift...I'm giving it back. After three hours and six phone calls to Manila, Panama, India, and Austin I discovered that when the battery dies in the unit, you're in trouble. At best, if the battery dies while under warranty, Dell will send you a new Jukebox after you pay to ship the old unit back to them. You lose all the music/data stored in the old unit. If the battery dies outside the warranty time-frame, Dell will not replace the battery at any cost. It is an expensive throwaway unit.

Warranty nightmare
by demonspawn ,Apr 10 '05
Pros: When functioning properly this unit is very easy to use.
Cons: The refurbished units are garbage.
My first DJ survived about ten months. Unfortunately, the hard drive crashed. Dell quickly shipped me a replacement since it was under warranty, but I got a "refurbished" DJ rather than a new replacement. The First replacement survived about one month. I shipped it back and received another "refurbished" unit. SURPRISE! From the time I received it, it malfunctioned. Since my initial one-year warranty had expired - barely - when I called Dell for my FOURTH DJ, I was told, "too bad." Keep in mind that Dell failed to replace my original DJ within the warranty period with something that worked. This is by far the worst experience I have had with any computer company customer support. Avoid this product, and avoid Dell.
