Pros: Intel 925X chipset, SATA hard drive, good expansion options, agressive pricing
Cons: No hard copy manual's, weak ATI PCI-E X300 Video card, no firewire port
The Dell Dimension 8400 is Dell's top of the line Desktop PC for home and business users, a model which uses Intel's 6XX series CPU's and motherboards based on Intel's 925X Express chipset while being an affordable step below their flashy XPS ...

It's all about Customer Support

by boudica_ , Jan 22 '06
Pros: First class customer service from the real people.
Cons: Their automated answering system needs help.
Yes, I own a Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop. No, I didn't order it; my husband put the package together for me. We discussed my needs, graphic programs, hardware add-ons, software and he helped me put a double monitor system together that met my needs. ...

Like walking through molasses

by growling , Nov 06 '05
Pros: Great online ordering system. Fast delivery. Wide range of customizable options. Less expensive than competitors.
Cons: Non-functional from day one. Customer support weak. Operating system unstable. Slower by the day.
I have had my Dell Dimension 8400 for one year now and have grown more and more dissatisfied with the quality of the machine and the quality of Dell's service. The machine itself has gotten slower and slower for no apparent reason, and Dell's customer ...

Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop. DO NOT BUY A DELL!

by eriecon1 , Jul 19 '05
Pros: It didn't burn my house down.
Cons: The worst support I have ever had to deal with. Can't understand the tech's.
I purchased my Dell about 3 months ago. I paid $400 for the tech support as well. One week ago my Dell decided not to work. I called the tech support number and they had me on the phone for 3 hours trying to walk me through their steps. Give me a break, ...

Cons: Horrible customer service, reps are very hard to understand, very unhelpful,
Computer was great at first, but then had problems within a week. Talked to tech support, was assigned a case number and they seemed to solve the problem. It reappeared, called again, and once again it seemed solved. That time they sent me a follow-up ...

by dbonanzam , Sep 21 '05
Pros: Seems like a nice unit - when it works - it works great
Cons: Dell has THE WORST service Department I've have ever dealt with. THE WORST
This is my 2nd Dell. Second because the first one was good - purchased in 2000 - tech support was Excellent and understandable. My 8400 was fine for about 3 months - then the hard drive failed - after about 3 hours on the phone "diagnosing" a 2nd hard ...

State of the Art Computing

by hroeder , Mar 31 '05
Pros: State of the art without glitzy prices
Cons: Some components made exclusively for Dell are less than optimal.
The 8400 has a high speed front end bus, uses an sata drive, has a serial video card and can be equiped with a superior LCD monitor capable of the highest definition viewing. I found only one problem with this machine. The DVD R/RW+ drive that came ...

Great buy for the $$ cooling fan gets noisy fast
by pilotguy13 ,Jul 28 '05
Pros: Great price, easy to upgrade/add components
Cons: Cooling fan noise only a month in to owning 2 of them.
I'm very happy with Dell. I'm on my second one, after outgrowing my first. I found both very easy to upgrade, add drives, etc. Very impressed with their racking of their hardware. The cooling fans on both of my computers got really noisy very early on. kind of a letdown. I thought their support was great every time I called. Hard to understand thru the indian accent, but they were pretty effective in helping.

It's a great machine, but a bit expensive.
by pacow ,Aug 19 '05
Pros: Great performance, Warranty, Passable tech support, easy to configure, cheaper then the competition.
Cons: You can build a better machine for a whole lot less money.
I wanted a Computer for playing the latest games (Half-Life 2) and for multimedia projects (Flash MX2004) This machine runs them great. I got:
3.0 GHz Pentium 4 530 CPU
1024 mb RAM
A GeForce 6800 PCI-E GPU
160 GB Hard Drive

For about $1,250. The problem is, If I had just baught the parts off newegg.com or a similar website, I could've built a machine equal to or better then this for only $850. Another problem is that Dell only uses Intel Processors and Intel Chipsets. These are fine, but for a gaming computer, you want AMD processors. The good part is, for a prebuilt performance machine, it's actually significantly cheaper then the Alienware and XPS alternative. It also delivers Incredible performance.

In short: This is a great machine, but you should really learn to build your own, it's not nearly as hard as it sounds, it's a cheap alternative, and most importantly, YOU GET THE PARTS YOU WANT. But if you've got plenty of money and really don't want to learn, the Dell 8400 (well, now the 9100 replaced it) could be for you.

Dell Bait & Switch Tactics
by smarco ,Apr 17 '05
Pros: Good computer, no problems.
Cons: Awful customer service and clearly defrauding customers like me. DON'T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU!
The Dell Dimension 8400 is a good computer. But I want to warn potential buyers of my bad experience. I was offered a $200 rebate on my purchase. I purchased directly from Dell, and the rep clearly stated "the total is $1886 but the real price is $1686." He also emailed me the rebate form with the order confirmation. But when I jumped through all the hoops to receive the $200 rebate I was denied. After several calls I was told the computer I purchased did not offer a $200 rebate. WATCH OUT CONSUMERS! If I had to do it over again I would have purchased a Hewlett Packard at Costco for less, and have a 6 month return policy.

Good specifications, horrible case..
by joshuaeas ,Sep 02 '05
Pros: Nice specifications.. decent price
Cons: Bad case, need guide rails to mount extra drives
I really liked the specifications.

Pros
Intel 925 chipset , 800 FSB, DVD+-RW.
The system works great, it is quiet.

Cons.
The case is really bad, It opens up like a big book, if you need to put in additional components, you need to get additional guide rails from DELL.

The access to the front USB ports is extremely bad. I couldnt connect any of my USB cables without actually bending down and finding the port.
