Sturdy Notebook with Great Price

by paisleyplace , Feb 23 '05
Pros: Works as hard as the high-dollar machines without the high-dollar cost.
Cons: Technical Support for Dell notebooks.
Background: As far as computer users go, I am an avid computer user and highly experienced. In addition to running a home network of six computers, I also keep the computers of numerous family and friends running smoothly including three notebooks. ...

You Get What You Pay For

by kelly617 , Dec 05 '05
Pros: affordable, slim casing, 3 USB hubs, DVD-ROM drive,
Cons: Large screen, keyboard, slow preformance, inefficient cooling fan, limited battery life
I set out to buy my first laptop/notebook computer with the express interest of getting the cheapest one I could find with a reputable name. Dell Inspiron notebooks started at $999 CAN, so I was very attracted to this particular laptop. Also, I had never ...

great de(a)ll

by sgail457 , Apr 05 '05
Pros: value, solid build, portability.
Cons: limited software package.
With 3 users in the house, we needed a second computer for email, homework and surfing. Space and portability were also issues, so a lap top was the perfect solution. I searched hi and low, and even looked at used laptop. Since we didn't need ...

Not a bad laptop for the price

by lebeit , Apr 22 '05
Pros: Affordable, some extras, CD burner, 15" display
Cons: Tech support, slow, some bugs, XP Home Edition
After reviewing endless budget laptops, I decided on an Inspiron for packed features with low price. I bought mine from Ebay for $599 + shipping and insurance, total $647. For that I got the newer model with the 15" diplay, Celeron 2.2Gig, 256 Ram, 35Gig ...

Inspiron 1000 Satanic Laptop! NEW IMPROVED UPDATE

by dixie_penguin , Aug 23 '05
Pros: Low cost, until you discover that low quality comes with it.
Cons: This is a good one word summary of the operations being conducted by Dell.
I bought a Dell Inspiron 1000 based on reputation and past satisfaction with Dell computers. Can you say "TIMES CHANGE"? The price was cheap, unfortunately I only later discovered this also extended to the quality of the machine. Where to begin? Dell ...

A great laptop computer
by canadiensfan ,Apr 28 '05
Pros: good for work
Cons: none
We got this when I went to my new job in 2003. This is a great laptop, you can do lots of things on it, and it is good for work. It also has a plug so you can plug it in to a computer. I think this is a great laptop.

Great college computer.
by silverem01 ,Oct 11 '05
Pros: Reliable, inexpensive, adequate for most computing needs.
Cons: Microsoft Office not standard, short warranty.
The Dell Inspiron 1000 makes a handy companion for college. Though not as small or fast as other models on the market today it gets the job done and is quite reliable. Added perks are the DVD/CD-RW combo and the price (I purchased mine from www.dell.com for about $614.00, now they run a lot lower). The downside of this model is that it comes with a very short warranty (I upgraded mine from 90 days to one full year at an additional expense), Microsoft Office is not standard with this model and in my case, viewing DVDs has been a problem for me. The software hasn't worked properly, but watching DVDs on my laptop isn't important enough for me to have contacted DELL or attempted to fix the problem. The benefits outweigh the negatives though and I'd highly recommend the Inspiron 1000 for anyone on a budget looking for a decent computer.

Good Basic Notebook
by niteranger7 ,Feb 22 '05
Pros: Price, Display, DVD/CDrw
Cons: Graphics, size/weight, small HD
For web surfing, email, and simple gaming it does a good job for the money. I use mine on a wireless network at home. Our other computers are a HP desktop and a Dell inspiron 8600. The 1000 is not on the same level as our other two machines, but for basic computer work and portability, you can't beat it for the price.

Get an extended warranty
by kathy1111 ,Jan 13 '06
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Can be slow; LCD went bad after one year
I was happy with my Dell Inspiron 1000 the first year I had it It's not blazing fast, but it's so cheap that I wasn't expecting miracles. The system came with a trial of McAfee's Security program, which is painfully slow to load and never did work properly even after I reinstalled it. I got rid of McAfee and installed Norton and everything was fine.

My Inspiron got the occasional blue screen of death, but not enough to be alarming. I do tend to work my computer hard, too. What irritated me, though, was the LCD going back just after the 1-year warranty expired. I was away on a trip and the computer was unplugged while I was gone. When I came home, the LCD didn't work anymore. Expect to pay over $350 to replace the LCD if it goes bad. My recommendation would be to obtain an extended warranty if you purchase this computer. It'll be less expensive.

avoid this product
by kingd48 ,Sep 27 '07
Pros: Are you kidding me?
Cons: An endless list...please see above
The warranty on this product was only 90 days, which was really ineffective. The hard drive crashed and Dell would not replace it. In addition, I came home the other night to find my AC adapter smoking and sparking. If I hadn't been home, my house would have caught fire. This product has very minimal memory capacity, the textured finish wore off very quickly. The battery life is very minimal as well, and it runs loud and hot. I do not take it to school or anywhere outside of my home, because it simply is embarrassing. I should be buying a new laptop soon, and needless to say, it will be a Toshiba, not a Dell.
-One last note: If you cannot stand customer support that consists of foreigners that get their English from a nearby translation dictionary, don't buy from Dell.

Cheaper doesn't exactly mean better
by rhbacker48 ,Dec 18 '05
Pros: portability, cost
Cons: no wireless internet, no reliability, lousy warranty, bad support service
I bought my Dell Inspiron 1000 with a lot of enthusiasm. I got it for a good price, and it was my first ever laptop. I bought the laptop for college and after one semester, it has already bit the dust. I called the company with my problem and I was stuck literally for hours on the phone with hard-to-understand foreign operators who eventually told me that my warranty had ALREADY expired and that there was nothing further they could do about it. Never will I purchase a Dell again. I highly discourage the purchasing of this product.
