It was wonderful for the first year and half - not bad if you lease.

by inphri , Oct 09 '04
Pros: Good Initial Performance, Adequate Screen Size, Floppy Drive Included, Responsive Keyboard and Touch Pad.
Cons: No Touch Pad Lock, Dramatic Drop in Performance, Not Durable Body, Noisy Operation, Shutdown Problem.
The first year and half when I got it, I was very happy with the performance. It was very fast and quiet. However, I noticed a dramatic drop in performance over the years, and now I just wish the lease can expire sooner. I wanted to share my experience ...

Latitude Notebook Not a Good Deal

by djede11 , Jul 25 '07
Pros: Good and Fast if little is stored on the Hard Drive.
Cons: Susceptible to Viruses, Slow if not Heavily Upgraded
I purchased my Dell Latitude c640 laptop in 2003, when I began my studies at Colgate University. At that time, this laptop was a mid-range notebook, and I had it upgraded from the basic functions. I ordered my Latitude c640 to come custom made with: ...

Dell C640 C series getting worse as time goes on. HORRIBLE!

by tr8r , Nov 04 '04
Pros: Nice size screen, slim, nice feel, easy functions.
Cons: S-L-O-W!! LOUD, HOT, Performance DEGRADES as you trade up.
I have owned no fewer than 50 Dell C series laptops. Starting with the C600, then C610 and finally the C640. They have all gotten worse in performance as I have upgraded. My C640 "powerhorse" is a pathetically slow DOG! The only thing my C's have ...

C640 really good with minor upgrades

by jb1007 , Jun 18 '07
Pros: Excellent battery, memory can be upgraded to 2gb despite posted 1gb limit.
Cons: Graphic card not powerful, stock hard drive is very slow.
I picked up a used C640 p4-m 1.8ghz with 512mb ram. After I upgraded the ram to 1gb and put in an 80gb 5400 rpm drive, this laptop was blazing fast. I also purchased a secondary battery and get about 5 hours playback watching video, or 6 1/2 hours ...

mediocre while it lasted.

by princessangry , Jun 26 '07
Pros: value for money, good linux compatibility, graphics card.
Cons: very cheaply built, problematic hardware, battery life bad, very hot!
note: I will only write about my experince alone. the technical end of it has probably been explained elesewhere. it pretty much acted like any standard lappie (with comparable specs) for any tasks I would throw at it, not much worth noting there. ...

This is an excellent laptop.

by patty39 , Aug 05 '08
Pros: Durable, easy to use, great graphics, for movie playback and games most computers slog through.
Cons: The audio (sound) is not good at all. The fan seems to constantly be going.
The good: I initially bought this laptop for myself and then ended up passing it on to my son when I bought my new desktop. This laptop has stood up well through the use of a hyper 7 year old so I think that says a lot in itself. He plays games on it ...

Stay Plugged In

by pinkpccna , Aug 13 '08
Pros: 2.4 gig cpu wi-fi card
Cons: battery life sucks, gets hot 153°F, the video card is a bit behind the times.
I bought this laptop about 4 months ago. It has a p4 2.4 gig processor with 30 gig hard drive and 512 megabytes of ram. It had a wireless network card installed and windows xp pro installed. It is fast if not much is on the hard drive. I upgraded the ram ...

Nice but a bit fragile
by dmundhenk ,Dec 21 '03
Pros: Solid PC if handled with care
Cons: Not very resistant to damage
I have been using a C640 since February of 2003 (almost a year). Before I got mine, I had some hands-on testing with several others, since the company I work for was buying a lot of these. It is a good computer but I think it is a bit sensitive to bumps and bruises...I've had trouble with the screen backlight not coming on, keys on the keyboard not working, and the touchpad not working properly. In my opinion, the materials used, connectors (screws and what they screw into) and maybe the manufacturing tolerances are a bit lax (i.e. cheap). If you are traveling a lot or work in ways that your laptop will get bumped around quite a bit, you should probably spend more on one that's built to withstand more.

Dell C640 - Best Laptop I've ever used
by Ryankey ,Oct 14 '03
Pros: battery, looks great, its fast, excellent picture
Cons: NONE YET!
The Dell C640 has everything you could want in a modern Laptop. I have always looked down upon laptops for being slower than there desktop counterparts, but this computer is hands down the fastest computer I have ever used. My system is equiped with a 2.4 ghz processor and 512 MB DDR ram. It came standard with Windows XP, and this thing FLIES! It takes about 5 seconds to boot up, and I have never had a single problem with it in the last 3 months. I play processor intensive games, such as Rise of Nations, and it does not slow down at all. It was a breeze connecting it to a wireless home network. It is very light-weight, attractive, and durable and I am sure it will serve me for many years to come. I am extrememly satisfied with this computer, I have owned many laptops (Compaq, HP, etc) in the past, but all had there share of problems. This Dell has had NO problems, and the battery lasts about 3 hours!!

Ehhh...you can do better
by mai_world ,Apr 26 '05
Pros: thin, small, lots of POWER
Cons: HOT,HOT HOT HOT!crappy design!
It is a great laptop all together, but i've had my fair share of problems with Dell. They screws fell out the bottom, and its not like I tampered with them to begin with. It gets burning, maybe even scalding hot! a bigger fan would have been more practical. I use a lapdesk at home that's covered with contact paper and the laptop has melted the adhesive and seperated it from the MDF. If thats not insanely hot i don't know what is. No really software or internal problems, just crappy design. In addtiion to that it only has one USB port, how pratical is that? NOT VERY

and finally, the charger port became very loose and wasn't charging anymore when I plugged the charger in, so the mother board had to be replaced. I've had the thing for only 1 and half years.

if you buy this, buy the warranty for sure

Laptop for the beginner!!!
by abridgedcolt ,Jul 31 '06
Pros: Cheap, easy to use
Cons: Heating up problem, not very fast
Good laptop for a beginner to start off with. It is very simple and easy to use, and cheap. The software package that comes with it leaves a little to be desired. For the serious users it is not the laptop for you. Real slow when multi tasking, not very much storage. And it has a serious problem heating up if it is on to long. All in all a good computer for the price but i would spend a little extra on a better laptop.

It is very Fast with 1 GB of RAM and P4 CPU.

A solid Laptop
by cad_cat ,May 04 '04
Pros: Well balanced, many diff peripherals
Cons: battery life avg. 2hrs single batt.
The Dell C640 is a nice laptop to have for student use. I have owned mine for 6 months now. It has great battery life, and you can get a CDRW, DVD-ROM, Floppy drive, extra battery, or many other peripherals for the 2nd adapter slot. I have also added the internal dell 1300 mini pci wireless card to the laptop. This card performs wonderfully and reception is not a problem. Overall I would say it's a great laptop for the average user.
