Pros: Excellent contrast, brightness, and adjustable stand Cons: Response time may not satisfy gamers
Introduction Several weeks ago, I noticed that the buzzing sound from my Samsung SyncMaster 753DF (17 CRT) was getting steadily louder. After getting two refurbished replacements from Samsung, neither of which I was completely satisfied with, I ...

Pros: Good image/text quality, height/swivel adjustments, digital capability, great price when discounts offered. Cons: Slow response time of 25 ms. Dell prices fluctuate like the stock market
I just purchased this monitor for $329.00, after much shopping around. It offers the most features and quality for the money. Unfortunately, with Dell, you constantly have to search the internet each day (or sign up to get alerts from websites posting ...

Outstanding image at a great price
by jrcomp1 ,Dec 10 '04
Pros: Image quality, height adjustability Cons: Price
This monitor has changed how I use my computer. Instead of looking down at a laptop screen, I'm able to adjust the height of this monitor. While the angle adjustments on most monitors are good, the height adjustment makes all the difference for me. The picture is great - I can see flaws that I didn't know about in my digital photos on this screen.

This is a fantastic monitor
by deanschutlz ,Aug 05 '04
Pros: Clear picture, good price, nice style Cons: Too small
This is a fantasic monitor. The color is wonderful. I have other flat panel monitors but this one has a clearer picture, and doesn't hurt my eyes. For the price this is what you should get.

beats the viewsonic vp171 ?
by ceztom ,Sep 06 '04
Pros: good height, better portrait view angle Cons: check font sharpness
see my review of the viewsonic vp171...in short the dell is better for the portrait mode, the whites are whiter?, and it is even using analog mode. maybe however the fonts are not as sharp...need to compare with a digital hookup. the usb ports are a plus, but can be considered ugly to bring more wires to the monitor.

Buyer Beware: Not all LCDs are alike for text!
by jane13161 ,Sep 12 '04
Pros: It's pretty
Good return policy at Dell Cons: Fuzzy quality of text
Slower response time for opening documents that other monitors I tried
I do a lot of on-screen editing of text documents, and so after being disappointed with the Dell 17 inch 172 FP, I paid additional money for the Ultra Sharp (1703 FP). I should have saved my money and just purchased the NEC MulticSync. The 1703 FP from Dell has great colors, but when you open documents the text is fuzzy and shadowy. I called Dell's tech support and they just told me there was nothing they could do! I do a lot of editing of documents, and it really bothered my eyes! I have to say that Dell was very nice about allowing me to return both monitors, but buyer beware--if you do a lot of text editing, not all Flat Panels are equal. Some have really poor clarity of text. I am currently using the NEC MultiSync LCD 1765, and immediately noticed a difference. Dell even offered to let me keep the 1703 FP for $100.00 less than I originally paid, but it just wasn't worth it for the lousy text.

Great value on a high end LCD
by mikin ,Jul 23 '04
Pros: Pivot operation, analogue and digital input, small dot pitch, super bright, hight adjustable. Cons: None.
After a long market research, I decided to purchase this 17" LCD.
It has the best set of features in its class; small dot pitch, digital and analog input, USB hub, and most important for me: pivoting screen that supports both landscape and portrait modes.
A word about pivoting screens: that's the way to go if you need to read long documents or papers without printing them. In portrait mode the screen contains roughly a whole page, and you don't need to scroll all the time.
I bought it refurbished directly from Dell and have been completely satisfied with my purchase. After upgrading my video card to a cheap-o Nvidia GeForce2 MX, the driver supports screen rotation natively.
In addition the screen is very bright, the OSD is easy to use and the auto-setup function is superb. It uses 120V current with a regular computer-like plug, so there's no power supply clutter or another proprietary hardware that can break down. The hight-adjustable base is small and stylish, and cleared plenty of room on my desk.

Outstanding product
by pande001 ,Oct 18 '03
Pros: Excellent text and graphics, high contrast, low glare. Looks great too. Cons: None that I can see yet.
I searched thoroughly for a high-quality flat-panel monitor when I purchased my computer recently. I researched many products including a number of Samsung and NEC products. Ultimately, the choice of the Dell 1703FP was a result of price and features. Having used the monitor for the past month, I am very pleased with it. Both text and graphics are very sharp and colors are well balanced and crisp. In all fairness, I don't do a lot of fast-action graphics or gaming, but it's really a stylish addition to my home office.

Fuzzy Type/Text
by jayem ,Oct 12 '04
Pros: Good picture. Well built Monitor. Cons: Blurry text.
I agree with Jane.
I have suffered this blurry screen for 8 weeks, ringing Dell Ireland.. each time for 3 or 4 hours, taking instructions, trying any number of solutions when when really they must KNOW that this screen is blurry for text. I have also written 2 letters, one by recorded delivery, which they have not answered. Dell said it was a 'perception problem'; well, I am relieved to see I am not the only one with this problem! I was beginning to think that the fault really did lie with me but I have previously worked with a crystal clear LCD so really I knew this wasn't good enough For many people it is their first purchase so obviously they are not going to complain because they have no standard of comparison. I have delayed asking Dell to take the LCD back because not being a technician, I didn't know the cause. I hope it is not too late! Unfortunately the screen Jane recommended is not available in the UK!
NB The price was approx Ł430 sterling (can't translate this).
