Cons: Screen door effect, Not true 32 bit color,

The best consumer quality monitor available.

by darkvapor , Sep 02 '04
Pros: Resolution, screen size, features, response time.
Cons: No true black.
After my trusty and well worn Viewsonic 19" CRT started to show signs of dying, I decided it was time to upgrade and go for an LCD panel display. Immediately, I was disappointed with the specifications of most of the displays on the market. Most 19" ...

Pros: Nice, large LCD for the price.
Cons: No cons that would keep me from buying or using it.
I had avoided purchasing an LCD for a long time, mostly because I get could a high quality 21" CRT for the same price as a 14" lcd, which had poorer viewing angles and response time. Since the monitor is the part you look at every second while using ...

The saving grace of LCD displays!

Cons: Lack of true black, Mild screendoor effect, edgelighting issues, hefty pricetag

Pros: A good display can last for years, and this is a really good display.
Cons: Stupid cable holder at the back of the display.
It is hard to make a commitment to buying a pricey 20" LCD display without psyching yourself up to love it. As a result, there are a lot of glowing reviews here. This one won't be much different. I got a 17" flat panel at work a couple of months ...

Dell 2001FP LCD Flat Panel Monitor
by iatacs19 ,Mar 02 '06
Pros: Cheap, good resolution, good design, good Dell warranty
Cons: Uneven backlight, prone to dead pixels
I had this monitor for 2 years, it served me very well. Although it is common and somewhat outdated for 2006, it was good in 2003.

Good resolution and response times. Good base design and VESA mount compatible. Lots of other inputs available, but nothing really looked good except for DVI or VGA. Is does have a USB hub built-in which comes in quite handy for plugging in devices and USB keys, etc.

I think overall, if you can get this monitor for a good price, $375 or cheaper then it is a great deal, otherwise you could do better with any 20in. But, always make sure of these 2 things:

1. 1600x1200 resolution
2. DVI connection

Without the DVI an LCD panel cannot deliver the sharpness it is designed to deliver.

Utterly Flawless
by alereon ,Jan 30 '04
Pros: Sharpness and clarity, flawless display, minimal ghosting, good mounting stand, great set of inputs
Cons: Price
My monitor arrived from Dell with no dead pixels, uneven lighting, or any other display defects. Problems with edge lighting, mentioned in other reviews, were absent. The most stunning thing about this display is the incredible sharpness and clarity. Text and graphics are razor sharp, even very small fonts are quite readable. The so-called "screen door effect", caused by the small unlit spaces between pixels, is essentially invisible at normal viewing distances. Ghosting, blurring of moving images, is completely invisible during movies and normal usage such as scrolling, but is visible in FPS games. I tested using Counter-Strike, ghosting was visible, but I got used to it within minutes and it did not adversely affect my enjoyment of the game. Contrast and color rendering are excellent, rivaling even high-end CRT monitors, and outperforming every other LCD monitor I've ever seen.

The Dell 2001FP features DVI, VGA, SVIDEO, and Composite Inputs, and can do Picture-In-Picture between them. It includes a 4-port USB2 Hi-Speed (480mbps) hub, allowing you to use more USB devices. The On Screen Display menu is simple to use and features an impressive selection of options and tweaks.

Piece of Junk
by jackmarsh ,Mar 29 '06
Pros: Looks good when it is turned off.
Cons: Monitor is unusable out of the box. Pay for new, get used.
Light leaks all around the screen, especially bright in the corners and left side. Completely unusable for any application except $500 paperweight.
Dell offered to exchange this defective monitor for a refurbished model. Pay for a new monitor, get a used monitor. I didn't see that anywhere on the Dell website when I was buying it.

NOT a gaming monitor
by angrykid ,Dec 25 '04
Pros: Great ergonomics, outstanding for graphic/video work.
Cons: Virtually useless as a gaming display. Stick with a CRT.
If you buy this monitor with the intent of playing fast-paced, multiplayer FPS (Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty, etc.) look elsewhere. Extremely disappointing performance - the ghosting is wretched and the choppiness makes playing almost impossible. Too bad, for a monitor that touts a 16ms prt.

I have returned mine to Dell for a refund.

On the other hand - for graphics, photo work, CAD, DVD/video, it is as good as it gets.

Very nice LCD moniter!
by billd75 ,Dec 30 '07
Pros: Sharp, vivid colors. Sharp text and lines. Nice and bright.
Cons: Response time could be better.
I have been a big fan of Samsung, Viewsonic and Sony monitors for a very long time because of the superior quality of them. So, my girlfriend bought me this flat panel Dell LCD monitor for Christmas to replace my old Samsung CRT monitor. I played games, looked photos and played with some of the settings. I gave it the good once over because I wanted to see how it compared to my old CRT. This monitor is bright, with very vivid, deep colors, sharp text and nice contrast. Nice high resolution and graphics looks amazing. Response time could be a little quicker (it's 8ms) and with fast moving video and games you can sometimes see very slight lag. Still looks awesome though!

by darksolder ,Jul 06 '06
Pros: Has everything you ever need!
Cons: Absolutly not!
I've had mine for as long as it's been out, i bought mine new on E-Bay brand new and NO problems what so ever! not even any dead pixles! It has great video quality, the inputs are very usefull (4 USB, DVI-D, D-SUB, S-VIdeo, and Composite). I've had very new games run on this display and no ghosting effects that i have seen, along with DVD playback, it's great! I've had 3371 hours 19 minutes total running time on this and still no problems! Totally recommended!

Excellent 20" LCD!
by webgal1 ,Feb 22 '05
Pros: Vibrant colors, clarity, small black bezel, auto-adjust feature, appearance, price...
Cons: Very slight graininess (screen door effect)...
I just received my new Dell 2001FP 20" LCD monitor. Shipping was incredibly fast, just two days! It arrived in perfect shape and with no dead pixels. I was pleasantly surprised at the very vibrant colors. Everything seems to "pop out" from the screen. I found it necessary to increase my screen resolution to 1600x1200 in order to achieve the best picture. But this wasn't a problem because everything looked too big in the 1280x1024 mode.

I was using a relatively new Sony Trinitron 21" CRT before I purchased the LCD, so I was used to having a very clear picture. I was hesitant on using the RGB (analog) mode, but the picture and colors were so very clear and bright that I didn't need to use the DVI (digital) mode. This saved me from going out and buying new DVI graphics cards and a new DVI KVM switch for my two PCs.

The Dell 2001FP probably isn't the best 20" LCD monitor on the market, but for the $549 price tag and the quality, I couldn't go wrong!

Hope you don't have good eyes..
by faded242 ,Apr 07 '04
Pros: Great price Great colors Fast response time
Cons: Poor picture quality Horizontal lines Grainyness screendoor effect
I know this isn't only my problem with this display. However, only a few people seem to be able to notice the poor picture quality that this monitor offers. There are glaring horizontal lines that show up on this display that I just couldn't get past. I shipped mine back within my 30 days that Dell provides. Here are a few examples of what others have claimed:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=29230

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=28896

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=28865

That about covers why I didn't like this monitor. As stated in the first review above, all monitors that use this display have the same issue. Some people just don't see it because everyone sees things differently.

Mac Users - Compare this Dell UltraSharp to the 20" Cinema Display
by agael ,May 28 '05
Pros: Excellent color, contrast and brightness. Great value for price.
Cons: None so far.
The specs are slightly better than Apple's, as far as contrast ratio and brightness, but there's also an S-Video input, as well as DVI and VGA. With 4 USB 2.0 ports to boot. I had the comparable new Mac 20" display and visually there's really very little difference, although the Dell seems a little brighter.

Here's one cool benefit: If you have a newer Powerbook G4 that runs extremely hot and you want to hook it up to a larger display, it will fit quite nicely on the
Dell 2001FP's bottom support raising it an inch or so to let cooling air circulate under it, while still allowing you to open it enough to turn it on.

I don't know about Dell support, I've heard of many nightmares, but Apple has been in a state of denial lately, as many of it's newer products have problems, especially it's flat panel displays, and the new iMac G5. So...consider this Dell instead of an Apple Cinema 20". It's nearly half the price when Dell has it on sale.

REFUSES to cooperate with Law Enforcement
by dsapp ,Feb 20 '07
Pros: NONE!!!!
Cons: REFUSES to cooperate with Law Enforcement!!!!!!!
Please, please, PLEASE do NOT buy a computer from Dell. I have been trying for 5 months now to get in touch with their "Fraud Department" on a case of identity theft that their "Fraud Department" can help us solve. They REFUSE to co-operate with Law Enforcement on ANYTHING!!!!! I have called written and e-mail requesting a way to JUST get in contact with their "Fraud Department" and have been told everything from "if they want to talk to you THEY will call you" to "I promise they will call you within 72 hours." NEVER have I as a Law Enforcement officer ever had a company SO resistive to Law Enforcement action to try to help one of their customers that is now a victim in an over $5000 identity theft.

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy from Dell!!!!!!!

More than a year and still the best!
by jz4305 ,Jul 29 '05
Pros: Crispness and response times. Inputs and USB ports conveniently located.
Cons: Software to rotate monitor view is hard to obtain from what I understand.
I've had this monitor for more than a year and it still continues to be the best monitor I've seen. No task has been too much. Even switching inputs quickly is no problem. Purchase price new for me = 999.00. Now 599.00. An amazing deal, and worth every penny at 999.

A word about pivot (rotation from landscape to portrait) on the 2001FP
by rregister ,Sep 23 '08
Pros: Pivot is the feature I was most interested in. The physical pivot works great.
Cons: Dell didn't provide any hints (that I can find) for getting the graphics to rotate.
I have the monitor and I think it looks and works great.
I just wanted to add a word about the pivot (90 degree rotation) on the 2001FP.

For this to work out of the box, your video/graphics card must support pivot capability (it must provide the mode 1200x1600 as well as the standard 1600x1200 resolution).

My graphics card (an old ATI Rage Fury Pro 128) does not handle this, but I was able to use the Pivot Pro software from Portrait Displays. They have a free 30 day trial download:

http://personalcomputing.portrait.com/us/products/pp_tbyb.html

I've only been using this s/w a short while, but it seems to work nicely.

On the 2001FP, as far as I can tell, there is no automatic switch to change the video mode from portrait to landscape. I have to switch the graphic mode myself (e.g. via an icon on the system tray for Pivot Pro, or via your graphics card setup controls).

I've never used a pivot monitor before, but I like the engineering of the Dell stand and the smooth/solid rotation of the pivot on the 2001FP.

Perfect for 1 day, then failed
by burnedbydell ,Mar 13 '05
Pros: Perfect for the first day if it isn't defective, you might be happy.
Cons: Good luck if you need support. You won't get squat.
24 hours out of the box it started. I noticed after shutting down Excel the gridlines were burned in to the screen. Then started the flickering. Mind you, this is DVI - supposedly flicker-free. Now, after 5 days, I have 1 pixel wide vertical stripes across it, and my black background is faded to a dull grey. After 3 hours on hold with dell, I go online and connect with their online support- they tell me since I have no service tag I have to call the same support number I called earlier. Nice. So, I wait another hour on hold, then decide I'm just going to return it. The email from their returns department comes back the next morning, and they tell me: "As a mail-order merchant, Dell has 30 days from date of receipt of merchandise to process your credit. Dell operates within those guidelines to credit your account." 30 Days ????
Now I have to fork out several hundred dollars to buy a new one (from another vendor) and wait on almighty Dell to refund my hard-earned cash.
I should've known better. Don't make the same mistake.

Excellent Monitor
by kevinwelk ,May 24 '05
Pros: Everything about it
Cons: NONE
Excellent resolution
Great price (recommend that you wait till you find a coupon for a reduced price which Dell frequently puts out)
Great features (4 USB ports, swivel capable)
Great for games (I'm not sure what problems angrykid had with the monitor. I've used multiple games with this monitor including Unreal Tournament 2004 and Half-life 2, and I find it BETTER than a CRT)

I've had the monitor now for 6 months and have had NO PROBLEMS. Completely wonderful monitor.
