Pros: Nice looking Cons: Death trap
I was cooking spaghetti last night when my cooktop exploded. Luckily, I had just walked across the kitchen for a glass of milk. Shards of glass covered the floor. The worst part has been GE's response. Once they found out nobody was injured, they ...

Decent cooktop for the money
by jpinkert ,Dec 29 '03
Pros: 5 burners with well spaced BTU ranges, relatively inexpensive for me Cons: Black glass is difficult to keep clean
I purchased this as part of a new house. The builder allowed this choice as one of many upgrades. After a little research, this seemed like the best value (based on other options available). Mine was installed with a telescoping downdraft in an island in my kitchen.
Here's a quick review of the features:
* 5 sealed burners
* Spark ignition
* Center mounted controls
* 1 x 12,000 BTU burner
* 2 x 9,500 BTU burners
* 2 x 5,000 BTU burners
* Glass cooktop
The 5 burner temps are great. The spark ignition is good, but my wife has trouble getting the burners to light from time to time (she needs to be more patient and leave it on -light- a bit longer). When on low/simmer, the burners don't blow out on their own, even when the downdraft is on full. But if a burner were to blow out, it will *not* automatically relight the burner. Some more expensive cooktops I've use will auto relight (Viking, for instance).
My biggest complaint is the difficulty in cleaning. We got the black model and it takes a lot of effort to remove grease and to keep it from streaking.

Glass cooktop shatters
by lsle916 ,Aug 24 '04
Pros: Can be difficult to clean, but if you are patient, it does clean eventually. Cons: Do not purchase this product, it's a safety hazard; glasstop can explode.
We purchased this glass range top as part of an appliance "package" when we bought our home four years ago. We use it everyday, and although difficult to clean, a lot of elbow grease gets the job done.
Last Saturday, I was cooking dinner on two of the burners (one on simmer and one on high). I had moved to the left of the range to wipe down the countertop when the glasstop EXPLODED and glass shot everywhere; up to 20 feet away. It even shot high enough to land in the garbage disposal of my sink island ~10 feet away. Although struck with glass, luckily I was not injured and my family was not in the kitchen at the time.
Aside from the range being ruined, the force of the explosion cracked the Corian surrounding the stovetop.

BEWARE OF EXPLODING GLASS!!!!!!!!
by berliners ,Mar 11 '07
Pros: Looks pretty. Cons: Can kill you at any moment.
I heard my wife scream and ran to the kitchen to find glass all over the place. She was boiling water on the stove, using only one burner on high, when for no reason the glass cooktop exploded. It looked as if a glass grenade went off in the kitchen. We have two small children that were playing in the kitchen just moments before the explosion, luckily they got bored of chasing each other around the center island and left for the living room.
Our stove was already installed when we bought our brand new house. This is obviously a well documented hazard and GE seems to simply ignore unless someone gets hurt. Well, I'm hurt. My wife is afraid of the stove. Now I have to take my kids out for dinner every night. Do not buy this stove. Run! Run away fast!

Major safety hazard: Glass cooktop shatters...
by pattekar ,Apr 23 '05
Pros: Five burners with well spaced BTUs Cons: Glass shattered for no apparent reason. Major safety hazard.
This cooktop was installed by the builder of our new house two years ago. This morning, during routine cooking, the glass cooktop shattered into tiny glass pieces, some of which flew as much as a few feet away. Fortunately, no one was injured, but this is a major safety risk. I would never buy this product again.

JGP636 Exploded Glass top
by debrinka ,Dec 23 '04
Pros: Nice looking stove. I like the five burners. Cons: Concerned about the safety issues regarding glass top.
This stovetop came with the 2 1/2 year old house that we recently bought. The glass was very easy to keep clean and it's a nice looking unit.
A week ago as I was boiling potatoes the glass top exploded, shooting glass across my kitchen. I'm thankful that none of the kids in my house were in the kitchen at the time. I stood there dumbfounded as I watched my potatoes continue to cook on the burner with glass chips shattered everywhere.
How can something like this happen? Aren't these things safety approved?

Glass Top Exploded
by vette69 ,Oct 19 '06
Pros: Worked fine before the glass shattered Cons: Safety hazard.
I have owned the Kenmore model of this cooktop for about 6 years. The glass shattered into thousands of pieces for no reason. Glass was everywhere all over the countertop and kitchen floor. It is a huge safety hazard. I have filed a report with the U.S. Product Safety Commission.

Our GE JGP636 Cooktop Exploded!
by arepech ,Jan 12 '08
Pros: Does most things we need from a cooktop. Cons: Major safety hazard. Burners are not continuous.
I was cooking dinner, and I had luckily ventured into the next room when our cooktop exploded into a million pieces. There was glass all over the kitchen. I need to contact GE, but I'm not very optimistic given what I've read so far. This cooktop came with the house we bought a few years back, so if I end up buying a new cooktop, it won't be glass!

don't buy exploding glass
by dkrugrats ,Jul 12 '05
Pros: decent cooking before it exploded. Cons: glass exploded everywhere, customer service was the worst experience of my life!!!!!!!
We bought our home used so the cook top was 1 1/2 year old. I was cooking breakfast on it with a house full of people and my baby niece in the kitchen when the cook top exploded. I contacted customer service and they told me "Well since no one got hurt, then there is nothing we can do for you." They sent someone out to see if it could be repaired and the service looked at it and said "nope, you need a new one ". They tried to charge me $75 for this service.
I am so unhappy an in total awe of how GE can put something out in the market place that can harm people!

Beware of Exploding Glass Top
by cmags ,Apr 20 '05
Pros: Fashionable Cooktop, suits an updated decor Cons: Presents extremely serious safety issues
The cooktop was part of the modernized kitchen in our recently purchased house. I was quite satisfied with it until yesterday, when it exploded into thousands and thousands of pieces. I was boiling soup and from the next room I heard a terrific explosion. I thought an electric mower had crashed through the patio doors. Shards of glass lay everywhere. What little remained on the stove is also cracked into thousands of pieces.
This presents a serious safety hazard. Clearly, I am not the only consumer this has happened to, and yet GE acts as if they've never heard of the problem. I can only hope to get the word out to concerned consumers since I hate to think what might have happened with children (or even an adult) in the kitchen at the time.
