Pros: Cooking quality and speed. Looks. Easy to install. Cons: None. Really! None.
This review is for the Advantium model SCA2001BSSC03. It is the 220 volt version of GE's Advantium with a stainless steel interior and a stainless steel with black accents exterior. This unit replaced a GE OTC microwave. And it replaced it easily and ...
Pros: Baking, Browning, Grilling anything in 1/6th of the time! Cons: Sometimes noisier than a GE MRI machine but still worth it.
This thing will cook nearly ANYTHING! I've been a customer of GE products in the past and have had good to above average results. But our 15 year old GE Spacemaker 115 volt "over the range" microwave oven died last winter. After reading a little and ...
We bought this as part of a new-construction home, rolled the cost into our mortgage. We've been using it for 3 weeks now. We haven't really cooked at the new house too much yet, so consider this a 'first-look' review. This is the 220 volt model (non-s ...
Pros: Very sexy design and very capable. Very good at multi-tasking. Cons: In stainless, polished interior IMPOSSIBLE to keep clean. WAY TO COMPLICATED to use.
We were looking for a microwave/convection oven. The Advantium promised this as well as hologen and "Speed Cooking". Speed cooking SUPPOSEDLY combines the microwave feature AND the halogens AND the traditional heating element to cook food very rapidly ...
Pros: Styling, Quick cook time Cons: The rotary dial over a push button or numerical pad.
I really love this oven. i have to admit I was very skeptical at first but really it is great for what I use it for. I use it for essentially all convenient foods that I used to put in the microwave plus others such as biscuits. It is excellent for prepackaged chicken and chicken tenders, grilled sandwiches, vegetables, roasting a chicken, etc. Imagine getting crispy chicken tenders in the same amount of time as microwaving them! It is pretty pricey but I have found it to be worth every penny. I have two small kids that want to eat the minute we get home and it really has been a lifesaver.
Biscuits take about seven minutes with NO preheating. You really can't imagine how much time that saves. Anyway, I highly recommend it. It is a bit of a pain to clean, but I think all stainless steel is. I do think they could improve this by adding a number pad. Turning the dial is a nuisance.
Pros: Great when your oven is being used and you need another one to cook. Cons: KEEPING IT CLEAN (STAINLESS MODEL) INSIDE AND OUTSIDE, IT IS NOT AN EASY TASK.
I purchased the GE Advantium because I love to cook. The GE Advantium is very good, I am still learning different uses of this product. The only problem that I have is not with it's cooking, it is how to keep it clean. The inside is stainless steel, and I was informed that you cannot use anything but soap and water to clean it. One rag with soap and water, another with water to wipe off the soap and another one to dry the inside. That does not always work, I feel that I am a slave to the one product that I thought would save me time - that makes cooking fast, and cleanup forever. Also the outside of it is stainless too and that is a job keeping it clean! It constantly smears any marks on it and you can not use glass cleaner because it seems to stain it. If there were a better way to clean inside and out this would be the perfect product all around!
Pros: Great features- it has it all. Cons: Frequent breakdowns, very expensive to fix- new oven would be less.
We bought this oven to replace an old one and in hopes that it would replace a lot of our oven use. The unit quit working twice in the first two years. It is now sitting in the backyard while I research a new microwave- all of which cost less than fixing this unit!
For the amount of $$$ that you spend on these ovens you would hope that it would last more than a couple of years
Great appliance with one drawback by giarrussohome ,Feb 25 '07
Pros: easy, efficient Cons: poor venting
We've been using our Advantium for over 2 years now and are very pleased with it. We use it mostly for grilled sandwiches, baked potatoes, chicken, snacks, fish sticks/chicken nuggets, pork tenderloin, biscuits and cinnamon rolls. The only food we've tried and haven't liked is frozen french fries...they seem to take on a strange flavor.
My biggest complaint is the venting. We have the wall-mounted model (it's in a double oven cabinet, right above our convection oven). When we cook chicken breasts or pork tenderloin on the black grill pan, the juices end up burning and smelling up the whole house. The vent just blows the smell right out the front of the unit.
I haven't found cleaning to be a big problem. I use the 7th Generation all-purpose spray and papertowels and they seem to do the trick. It's a great microwave oven too!
It's even capable of keeping two teenagers fed! by mizzlizz ,Sep 27 '06
Pros: faster than the speed of light! (tee-hee)and easy enough for teens. Cons: Too few directions for basics. The enclosed "video" is in VHS format-not DVD
We built a new home & were introduced to the Advantium by our builder who owns one(even though we purchased all of our GE Monogram appliances from a local appliance dealer).
I found that the unit is not only incredibly easy to use, but it cooks just as fast if not faster, than the it says. Having two teenagers in my home, it is now possible for them to cook healthy food for themselves. They actually love to cook! We've found that our conventional oven is rarely used now.
I can truly see how people can say "You'll wonder how you ever got by without it!"
I had never even heard of the Advantium before, but I'm definitely hooked on this!
It's amazing! I just wish that the unit came with more "how to...." info instead of just their recipes book. I want to know how to adjust the recipes that my family already loves & the cookbook that comes with the oven doesn't mention basic cooking procedures & use.
Pros: Cooks pizza, popcorn perfectly, will brown. Defrosts without cooking the edges. Cons: Seems to overheat at times. Strongly recommend the extended warranty.
Well, have had this for 2 years now.
Get the extended warranty for sure. 2 service calls but fixed both times. When it was not working, realized how dependent we have become on it.
I really had no idea how much I was missing with a regular microwave, but wanted the "latest" when we remodeled the kitchen. Its the surprise hit of the entire remodel.
Replaces many other appliances by dunmovin ,Jul 13 '06
Pros: Dinner at microwave speed with oven-roasted look and taste.
Cons: Learning curve.
Cleaning it after each use.
Noisy vent fan.
I have been using my Advantium for 3 months now. I've taken the time to learn how to use it and how to adapt my old recipes and favorite dishes to it. The result is that I very rarely use my conventional oven anymore. Even my cooktop and gas grill get used a lot less because the Adv. has replaced them for speed, ease of use and quality of the food produced.
My family uses it for frozen burritos, quesadillas, egg rolls and other snacks. They come out crispy but not greasy. I like it for scratch cooking because in less than 10-12 minutes, you will have your main dish completely done, looking and tasting like restaurant quality.
On the down side, it takes time to learn how to use it, and it has to be cleaned after every use. I have the above the range model and have it vented-out. As a range hood, it vents well but it's pretty noisy. Overall, it's a great appliance that I wouldn't want to be without.
Pros: Great cook time. Grilling hot dogs and baking in a microwave type device is fantastic. Cons: User Interface engineers should use the KISS principle.
I am pleasantly surprised at this appliance. I was pretty skeptical after reading the marketing reviews at this site, but after using it for about a month, I don't have any real complaints.
Pros: pretty Cons: turntable can NOT be turned off---microwaving needs two step process for selection
I miss the ease of pressing, for example, "potato", and letting the microwave take it from there. One must press microwave, then look for a close approximation of the food to be cooked, then answer many questions that might not even fit the food item you have, and so on. But the biggest problem is that you can NOT turn off the turntable. If you have a long cooking pan, or worse yet, want to microwave an unwieldy package of frozen food, such as a long package of thin-sliced frozen chicken cutlets, be prepared for difficulty.
Be wary. Has not come close to marketing hype. by akmiecik ,Dec 06 '04
Pros: Looks nice. Good microwave. Cons: Not even close to the marketing hype.
Purchase the oven because my wife keeps telling me she is going to be a good cook someday. Oh well, looks good in the kitchen and functions great as a microwave.
I find it interesting the all the opinions I find on this oven seem to use the same GE marketing lines.
I have been diligently trying to get cookies to cook in the Advantium (daughter had cookie dough fund raising project at school so I have lots of raw material). The oven simply does not work. I challenged my sister-in-law to get it to work in her Advantium and she agrees, the marketing is hype.
At the recommended settings the cookies come out flat and obviously affected by the microwave heat. I have tried hundreds of combinations and have concluded it is worth the extra 3 minutes to cook in the conventional oven.
