Used it a week now, and it's going great!

by arkaycee , Nov 02 '04
Pros: Easy, convenient, no instructions needed for the basics; accurate maps so far.
Cons: *Really* wants you to go in the direction you're moving; No internal power supply
I'll only talk about some things here I've not seen mentioned or at least emphasized in some of the other reviews here, most of which I think are right on target. I couldn't be home when UPS came for me to sign for it, so I had to pick it up at UPS ...

Cool Device That's A Hassle to Update

by kansaskeith , Sep 25 '04
Pros: High-quality. Loaded with features. Vivid color. Extensive maps.
Cons: Pricey. May be tough to mount on small vehicle's dash. A pain to update.
I bought this device for two reasons: (1) to experiment with GPS technology, to which I was new; and (2) because it was advertised as the latest, greatest, with an emphasis on user-friendliness right out of the box, no need to unlock, download or install ...

$150.00 for updating the mistakes?

by morrist714 , Sep 06 '05
Pros: Good, if you generally know where you are going.
Cons: Charge you $150.00 for 2005 updating (or simply trying correct mistakes & overlooks?)
Have owned this device for over 9 months now. Used it quite often. It is, in general, a not bad gps device, but still, it has lot of shortcomings and mistakes. The best bet if you don't want just to be blindly guided by this 2620, better check and ...

Poor Design worse customer service
by narcllc ,Sep 28 '07
Pros: When it works, it works well
Cons: 50-50 on mapping, poor design and lousy customer support.
I Have owned this unit for about 2 years. I have had all the problems others have stated; poor mapping, wanting to go back to the same road, even if the road was closed etc. The switch on the side is so well placed that when it flop's around due to the poor locking tilt, you turn the unit off. Lets not talk about the cheep connector that the tabs bend over time and you have to buy a replacement for $40.00. I have the same question as others, why when you pay $900.00 do you have to BUY and updated map. Took it to Florida on vacation and most of the time I was driving on grass. (At least thats what it showed on the Garmin.) I e-mailed my concerns and haven't heard from them. (That was over a year ago)I will NEVER buy a Garmin unit again. Not that they care.

Works great, I recommend it.
by aravindr ,Nov 29 '04
Pros: Good & very customizable interface, easy setup, nice form factor.
Cons: Some address quirks.
I bought this when I bought my van (used, didn't come with one) and this helped straight away. Setting up was a breeze, and I was able to get directions to anywhere pretty easily. Very usable interface, either by way of touch screen or the remote.

Has some quirks - it stops shot of door numbers when navigating to addresses sometimes, it seems to be using some algo to figure our where houses are in a street rather than their exact location. And it confuses right & left most of the times.

That said, this is a good product to own.

Excellent value
by germann1 ,Sep 24 '06
Pros: The entire US is in the unit. You do not have to constantly download routes.
Cons: The inability to speak the street and route names. No automatic rerouting for traffic/weather.
I purchased the unit in July '04. With exception of a couple of learning routes (going a mile out of my way to get there faster does work), I have nothing but good to say about my 2620. All features work perfectly as the directions explain. I installed a power cable directly to my motorcycle and had a sound problem. Garmin replaced the unit after 25 months of ownership, no charge. The new unit is great also.

I would not recommend Garmin or the 2620
by jchism33 ,Feb 01 '05
Pros: looks nice
Cons: Over heats, and breaks down often, and will not be replaced with equal value.
I have had the Garmin 2620 for less than 8 months, and had to send it in twice for repair. IT was summer time and the thing would heat up and freeze frame. So I sent it in. The first time they sent me a new hard drive because they could not replicate the problem (I bet they did not put it on a dash of a Black Truck). The second time they replaced everything with a "Newly Reconditioned" 2620 that was obviously used the rubber had been scratched, and the contacts for the AC/DC connector had obvious wear, buttons were dirty. The unit I ended up with now has no access door for accessing the hard drive. Customer service rep. did not even know that my model existed. Bottom line is that my wife got better CS from LL Bean over a $20 shirt. I spent $1150 on this thing and demanded that I get new item, their response was that they are following procedure. They made it clear this was the best they would do. I on the other hand decided I will let everyone know how they deal with customers.

Don't kill your self when using Streetpilot 2620
by hyperman51381 ,May 13 '04
Pros: Multiple location mapping
Cons: NO DETAIL STREET MAP OF MAJOR METROPOLITAN
Garmin does not have detail street map of Major California Metropolitan area. The machine guided me to drive into a sound wall and land on traffic below to get home. BE CAREFUL WHEN USING GARMIN 2620. DRIVER BEWARE!!!

Garmin Street Pilot 2620
by roadromer ,Jul 25 '05
Pros: We LOVE the way it locates all our needs & the ease of use.
Cons: They do need to up date the maps & correct which side of road.
We bought the product to find locations as we travel the USA. We travel in an RV & at the cost of fuel do not need to make mistakes finding a place.Yes, sometimes it does not know it's right from left but a quick visual works for us. Friends have the 2610 & it made use want to buy our own. Love that we do not have to mess with downloading location info to cards. Business come & go so sometimes a second choice has to be made.

A Very Nice Unit
by doctorrog ,Apr 10 '05
Pros: maps pre-loaded; good resolution; great directions
Cons: no battery only capabilities; minor software glitch
I purchased the 2620 instead of the 2610 because a friend ran into the problem of taking a trip and not loading in the proper maps for the area he was going and it rendered the unit useless. I recently moved to a new state and it has been wonderful to have the 2620. It has many nice features but it does not have the capability to run on batteries only as other(older) Garmin units can. The dash bean bag stays very well on the dash and the screen has very nice resolution and the remote is very handy.
The unit was on the pricey side but got a great deal on-line at ShipDog.com - $750 when BestBuy had it in their store for close to $1100.
Overall, a great unit with only a small glitch where it seemed to crash when I was trying to input a route name. Otherwise, no major complaints.

Good usability and great features
by markph ,Jun 13 '05
Pros: find hotels along route, remote control, clear voice
Cons: old map information consistent with other GPS's, colors day/night was poor
I purchased the Garmin 2620 with the hopes of finding more advanced features than the Magellan.

I found more advanced features -- save routes, find/select points of interests nearby/along route/another address. I liked the feature of finding POI's without canceling my current route. I can even select points I designate on the map with the arrow and add points of interests that currently do not appear, but that I may frequent.

The quality of the map is less than the Magellan, but that is a small loss in comparison.

This was only slightly more difficult to use than the Magellan as well. Technically challenged could master it, but it would take a bit longer to do so.

Can't Calculate Routes
by deesy58 ,Jul 28 '04
Pros: Map data for all of the US and parts of Canada. Beanbag mounting Bracket.
Cons: Inability to correctly route long trips with multiple "via" waypoints. Useless "buttons."
My new Garmin StreetPilot 2620 is totally incapable of calculating correct routes when more than one "via" waypoint is entered. It consistently creates nonsense routes that travel in circles. A 1500 mile trip sometimes calculates to over 3000 miles with the StreetPilot's incomprehensible detours.

After downloading and installing the latest version of the software (V3.80), and after spending over three hours on the telephone with Garmin Technical Support, it is clear that this product is not "ready for prime time." Also, when you are adding "via" points, a button on the screen asks if you wish to "Add Another." Garmin Tech Support says that this button cannot be used, that the the "Done" button must be pushed after each "via" point entry. This causes a lengthy route recalculation that makes route entry very tedious.

For short, simple routes, the product seemed to perform fairly well, with only minor routing errors that were primarily of a nuisance nature.

Clearly, Garmin needs to get the bugs out of their routing software before the StreetPilot 2620 will become a useful product for traveling motorists.

Happy with my Garman 2620
by spsinger ,Jun 01 '04
Pros: Ease of use. Voice output and touchscreen for input. Less expensive than Magellan 700
Cons: Maps not up to date.
The 2620 proved to be very accurate and helpful in my trip
from Northern California to the LA area. Once in the area it made negotiating complex freeway interchanges easy. Also was helpful and seems comprehensive in finding restaurants and service stations, and is easy to add those into the trip on the fly. On the downside, it did not know where a major hotel in Santa Ana was that has been in place over a year, and since the hotel apparently was not there when the maps were last updated, did not even comprehend the address. Traveling down I-5, the major route north-south through California, it did not know of more than 2 restaurants in close to a 200 mile stretch, which of course was highly inaccurate. Overall however, I'm satisfied with the unit and its easy to install and operate with minimal consultation to the handbook. I never lost satellite reception on the trip with the internal antenna.

You have got to have one... never be lost again..
by tailbone ,Jun 26 '04
Pros: great maps, easy to use, high quality
Cons: maybe a little on the expensive side but worth it
We just purchase one of the 2620 GPS units and have been throughly impressed. No longer do I have to run to the computer to print out directions and a map. Everyone should have one of these in their car. The 2620 is very easy to use, the map detail has been very good. The only thing missing are some very new roads. Not only have we had a positive experience with the unit the whole purchase has been a great experience. Which can be unusual for a internet purchase. We purchase ours at Scuba Steve's Marine Outlet, www.scubasteve.biz. Our emails were responded to and questions answered. Delivery was very prompt and I had a tracking number from them the same day I ordered. They understand customer service at Scuba Steve's (www.scubasteve.biz).

worth the money
by jacobsridge ,Jan 24 '05
Pros: mounting, remote operation, service's search
Cons: can't think of any
I purchased the Garmin 2620 with the hopes it could eliminate the need for my wife to wake me when she had to question directions. It worked. After getting used to setting the routing preferences and saving routes for future use, it has become an essential tool in our life. We drive a class 8 vehicle and log 100,000 miles per year. Total times I have had problems is so small that I can't complain.
