nothing but trouble
by pjsmall1 ,Dec 08 '04
Pros: Fairly fast transmission. Cons: constantly jams, bogus error messages, too many problems
HP had always been a reputable brand for us so I had no qualms buying this for our office (25 employees). We fax a lot but the first one lasted only two months and had to be returned - "beyond repair" per IT person in India after hours on the phone with him. Second one constantly jams and always has bogus error messages blinking. Looking for a replacement now.

Junk - see above
by cpadgett1111 ,Apr 08 '05
Pros: It was nice to have a color fax. Cons: Required two legal size pages to receive a one-page legal size document - not adjustable.
I've always been a fan of HP printers, and have had good luck with their products in the past. However, this particular product has become an albatross around my neck. Now that the warranty has expired, it is displaying a carriage jam message that cannot be resolved. I am off to the office supply store to purchase a reliable product.

Lemon - Don't buy
by lawfirm ,Mar 28 '05
Pros: Worked reliably for 3-4 months. A good paperweight now. Cons: See above. Doesn't Work.
Always trusted HP; our first and 2nd HP fax machines lasted for years, so we bought another HP. Bad idea. This worked for a month or two then gave us a barrage of problems -- bogus error messages, constant requests to "align cartridges," had to keep turning it off, then on in order to send a fax. After 3 attempts at repair, our HP rep told us, AFTER the warranty had expired, that this machine was a LEMON and was UNREPAIRABLE, and essentially to POUND SAND. It's only a year old -- I expected much more for my $$. Pound Sand? We will, thanks, with something NON-HP.

CRAP CRAP and more CRAP
by coadobe ,May 15 '05
Pros: It was reasonably priced. Cons: See body of text above.
The HP Fax 1230 has a problem with the logic that causes the carriage to jam and the machine to get stuck initializing. It cannot be fixed and so far, HP is not willing to offer any kind of restitution. Our machine failed 14 months after we purchased it. It received very light use, probably less than 200 copies/faxes over 14 months. The certified HP repair technician in our town of 16,000 people said he had seen several over the past year.
We've long been fans of HP but not any more. Customer service is a thing of the past. Buyer beware.
