Pros: Cleans the air effectively and efficiently. Quiet at lower speeds. Cons: Filters are expensive. (But, worth the price for better health).
I was hooked by the TV ads for certain ionic air cleaners, and spent large dollars for two of them. Major mistake. As a matter of fact, dust would actually accumulate ON them. So much for cleaning the air! I finally went to Consumer Reports and found ...

Works well, but replacement filters can be costly
by dalai_mama ,Sep 27 '05
Pros: Very effective air cleaner; quiet on low-to-medium settings; covers a large area. Cons: Large; replacement filters can be expensive if purchased retail; noisy at high/turbo settings.
I bought the Kenmore 335 CADR Air Purifier used on ebay at a fraction of the in-store price and have been very pleased with its performance. We have several pets, and the 335 does a good job of cleaning the air of dander, dust and floating pet hair. It has multiple settings, from low (very quiet) to turbo (very loud). Indicator lights let you know when it's time to change filters. Unfortunately, I did not check out the price or availability of replacement filters. The 335 has a huge HEPA filter that retails for about $100.00 and charcoal pre-filters that retail for around $30 per box. These filters are available on-line from Sears, but you must be sure to have the part number. Sears goes out of its way to make it confusing for consumers to locate replacement parts--you must have a part number or model number that is displayed in the most inconvenient location they could find. Once again, ebay was the more cost-effective solution.

Researched air purifiers and made great choice
by protector_gs ,Mar 03 '06
Pros: Product does it's job! Cons: The turbo speed,(above high) is louder of course, but not unbearable.
I spent hours researching the internet to find an air purifier that actually cleans the air as advertised. There are many brands out there, but Consumer Reports show this as one of the best. There is a chart that may be viewed on line at their site. I stayed away from the ionizer air purifiers, as these can cause breathing problems. The Kenmore 335 works as described, so watch the hype out there about other brands. Some of the most well known brands do almost nothing to reduce air borne particles, mold, pollen etc. Make sure it has a CADR rating and the unit is appropriate for your room size. There is nothing I do not like about the Kenmore 335. If you buy this model #83202 before April 1, 2006 you get a $30 mail-in rebate like we did!
