Pros: Smooth, smoky, peaty delight. Heavenly. Cons: Bah!
Summary: "Smoke in a bottle". That's how a friend of mine, nowadays a whisky-nerd just like me, described the 16 y.o. Lagavulin to me after his first taste of the stuff. "I swear that you could smell the smoke in my apartment the whole day once I...

Pros: Excellent smoke and peat interplay for a fabulous flavor. Cons: Expensive.
Summary: If you have read some of my other whisky reviews, you may be thinking, "hey, didn't he declare Highland Park 18 yo was the best single malt whisky?" Well, yes I did and there is no contradiction in relation to the title of this review because that ...

Pros: As stoutly smoky as they say. Powerful, rich stuff, even for an Islay malt. Cons: A little on the expensive side. Not made for the everyday imbiber.
Summary: It was the Scotch I just had to try. Having developed my taste for the whiskey on the smoky, peaty rocks of Laphraoig, I was in search of something else, the ultimate experience thatd kick me around the room, transport me across the Atlantic, and ...

Pros: Not hard to find, great savoring malt Cons: Not a good starter or for the timid.
Summary: I recently splurged on myself and bought a sampler 6 pack of single malts and as luck would have it 5 of them are listed here on the site.
I have reviewed the first 4 recently and this is the 5th.
(Not all at once of course)

Pros: Peatiness and heat smoothed by sherry, vanilla and caramel. Perfect balance. Cons: When the bottle is finally (gasp) empty.
Summary: Maybe ten years ago a friend introduced me to Laphroaig, which I liked. It was unusual and unforgettable. This was before every other person you met was a self-styled single malt aficionado. In those days, single malt generally meant one of the...

Pros: Superb character, highly refined spirit with exceptional wood accents Cons: Too much adulation is misleading. Its just very good, period.
Summary: Whiskey...long time since I stopped drinking it on a regular basis. I guess it had a lot to do with the fact that Whiskey drinkers in this country tend to be snobbish and pretentious executive-wannabes, or even worse. Fact is, very few people I know who...

Pros: smooth, intensely flavorful Cons: about as expensive to keep around the house as any other sixteen-year-old
Summary: There comes a time in a man's life when he just can't order vanilla ice cream for dessert after a steak dinner anymore. This, my dear friends, is what Scotch is for. Think of it as dessert for the power-brokers of the world.
Now, I don't...

Pros: Rich body, strong peaty taste, true to district of Islay. Cons: none - unless you don't like strong, peaty single malts.
Summary: One of the best names in single malts, this 16 year old doesn't let you down one bit. When tasting a scotch, in particularly the finest of the single malts it is important to remember what one is looking for in the taste and the experience of the drink....

Pros: A classic Islay - a big whisky Cons: Not for everyone
Summary: ”Experience teaches that most of the riotous and obstreperous conduct of drunks comes from the young and fiery spirit which is sold, while men who may over-indulge in old matured whisky become sleepy and stupid, but not in a fighting mood.” Sir...

Pros: Butter sweetness on the pallet and Smokey in the nose. Unique. Cons: Cost more than most, but most cannot compare. There's Nothing like Lagavulin.
Summary: If you have a love for scotch and all that separates scotch from other forms of whiskey you will absolutely love Lagavulin. The smokiness and peat are present in a complexity and character not found in any other scotch. There is nothing quite like...

Pros: Unique, powerfully warm flavor Cons: May be a bit strong for some
Summary: I first began my obsession with Lagavulin a couple of years ago when my brother and I discovered it's wonderfully smoky, peaty flavor at an Irish pub in Chicago. This fine single malt definitely has an identity all its own in this class of scotches....

Pros: Perfectly rounded example of an Islay; BIG, rich, smooth, well balanced. Great price! Cons: Perhaps an acquired taste?
Summary: I have sampled Lagavulin on many occasions, as such I have not been in a huge rush to get my own bottle. This whisky is fairly common in decent restaurants and bars, plus all my friends seem to have a bottle. Finally, thanks to my wife doing some...

Pros: Nose, taste and finish Cons: Not cheap
Summary: Over the years, I have sampled a variety of Scotch, from rotgut to royalty. Never, though, had I tasted Lagavulin. A fellow Scotch fan said it was his favorite and I nodded politely, sort of like you do when the nice missionaries from the Jehovah's...

Pros: An amazing complexity of flavors Cons: Not for everyone, a bit expensive
Summary: First there is the bouquet. Smoky, sweet, a whiff of a sea breeze. It's sunset on the beach, the bonfire is dying. The gradations of amber at the bottom of the glass (it should be a large glass, to capture the complex bouquet), ranging from honey to...

Pros: Rich, robust flavor Cons: Some might say it's expensive
Summary: My husband introduced me to the joys of single malt Scotch. Lagavulin has become a favorite of ours. We always drink it neat. The peaty flavor reminds me of a green forest. A sip of Lagavulin fills me with a warm glow.
