Dell Inspiron 5100 (5100BS1) PC Notebook

Pros: fast, decent battery life, nice monitor, relaible.
Cons: heats up too fast, alittle heavy.

I just recently got this Dell Inspiron 5100 from my dad for about $300. He baught it awhile back and really didn't have any use for it since lately he's been working on his desktop and I was in need of an upgrade from my Dell Inspiron 2600 series. The specs for the Dell Inspiron 5100 are: Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz/533MHz FSB, 384MB of Ram, 40GB Hard Drive, 24x CD-RW/DVD combo, 32MB ATI Raiden 7500 video card. My Dell Inspiron 2600 had a Pentium 3 1.2GHz/266MHz FSB, 256MB SDRAM, 20GB Hard Drive, Intel 830m 32MB video, 24x CD-RW/DVD combo. This laptop has been a nice upgrade so far but in the future I'm planning on upgrading the memory to either 640MB or 768MB depending on what memory stick comes out. I think this laptop rocks. It also has a 15.0 inch SXGA+ (1400x1050) which is awesome. I'd recommend this if you have a old laptop and need an upgrade.

Its an overall good laptop,,,,However,, I would give the customer service an E-. After about a month after I received this laptop the button on the network slot broke, and I called dell. Well after about 3 different phone calls and finally having to speak to a supervisor I am getting it fixed.. Trust me if you need a repair done be warned YOU WILL GET THE RUNAROUND!!!!!

Cons: many breakdowns: LCD monitor, keyboard, CD player, power cord

Our DELL ISPIRON 5100 has has several problems. Within 6 months of purchase, the LCD screen stopped lighting up. After several calls to Dell and hours on the phone, they agreed to replace it as it was still under warranty. Now, the lap top is only 16 months old and the CD/DVD player stopped working. Since, it is no longer under warranty, we have to fix it. The power cord sparked and had to be replaced. Recently, the keys on the keyboard have started to stick. We do not even use the lap top all that much.

It is a LEMON. nothing but headaches. I do not recommend it. If you must get a DELL, make sure you get the extended warranty.

Pros: power/price
Cons: heavy, not so pretty.

like many dell products, it's sorta aimed at the bottom, but is cheaper than other options. i like the power, but it's not slick like the thinkpads

Pros: It looks like you have a laptop
Cons: Doesn't work.

Mine won't even turn on anymore and I've always taken good care of it.  For a while it would turn on after about 100 different attempts at booting up and once I get it on, I don't turn it off again because it won't start.  Every once in a while you can't avoid turning off the laptop (like when our power was out for 5 days after hurricane IKE)and then you're screwed.

I had to replace the hard drive when it was 4 months old too.
