I had a need for a high function laptop last summer. I bought this laptop at auction in Aug/03 for $1100. It was loaded with XP Home, 40 GB and 512MB RAM. It serves as my main business and personal machine. I run it on a wireless network with a tower that has 60GB and store lots of data there to avoid carrying it when I don't need it.

The CD burner is great along with all the XP burner functions. The DVD will not run properly for movies without being on full power. This is becoming less of a problem as airlines become equipped with plugins at the seat. But it was a major disappointment.

I had an HD actuator fail and HP restored it at their mail-in center no problem. I was without the machine for 10 days but most of that (5 days) was the courier!

I bought my 1525US last 01/14/2003 after more than two weeks of shopping for the best DVD/CD-RW-equipped notebook that costs not more than $1500. This was the fastest laptop (2.4Ghz) available at that time. I found the 15" SXGA monitor great for watching DVDs. I also like the way speakers are placed at the front edge of the notebook. It let the speakers play unobstructed even when the screen is closed down. I've seen and used various Compaq models before, but never had I seen as cheap-looking (feels cheap too) as the plastic materials on this model. I also noticed that the screen assembly is not well-fitted into the main body. Everytime I close down the screen to turn display off, I have to put some weights on top of it to apply enough pressure to that tiny button which deactivates the screen.
